Title: Holiday Habits
Post by: Miss.M on April 10, 2013, 22:37:05 PM
So this monday it's 3 months til I'm back in Calis! To get everyone in the holiday mood, I want to ask about holiday habits. Are there any particular things you must do on holiday?

My 5 things:

1. Relaxing boat trip, a change of scenery and something different to swim in other than the pool
2. A trip to the Fish Market
3. One crazy night in Hisaronu (I feel I'll be only one with this habit!)
4. A lunchtime visit to Mozaic Bahce
5. Walk from one end of the prom to the other on the first morning, to see any changes

I wouldn't say all these are deliberately done when we visit, some just happen and I've noticed it's been done every year we've been!

Ha ha, one of my favourite topics :D

The must do's for us:

1. Fish Market evening (time of year/evening temperature allowing)
2. Boat trip ((time of year/temperature allowing)
3. Mozaik Bahce
4. Chicken doner wrap at Chez Frank de la Cannon on arrival in resort (flight time permitting)
5. Sahil Lokantasi lunch admiring the traffic lights. Traditional order is one Iskender kebap, one cheese and mushroom pide
6. A trip to the hairdressers in Gunlukbasi and a shave round the corner (you can decide which of us gets which)

Also, p1ssing around trying to get a sim card and phone that work together   ;)

1. State, categorically, that I am not going to go to the market.
2. Argue with Mrs B about 1
3. Go to market.

But, Mr BA, do you recall a time when a trip to the market was right up there on your own list?

I do, but today I find it possibly the most irritating place on the planet.

After my first few trips to the market I came to the conclusion that it was the most tedious part of the holiday, especially in August when its a million degrees under the canvas.
hello boss, cheaper than Asda, Cheaper than Matalan etc.  >:(

Also the prices went on up as the quality went down and down. I remember us being stopped on a return to the UK for a holiday at customs where we were asked several questions in a laid back "i have to stop someone and sorry it's you guys" manner - one being "have you brought back large quantities of products from Turkey". I can honestly say I had no idea what he talking about as he'd already covered fags and booze - and asked "like what sort of thing?" His reply was "you know, like fake T shirts..."!

We informed him we were arriving in the UK for a week of T shirt buying in Tesco, Matalan, Asda, Primark, Sports Direct - and definitely not bringing any rubbish in with us..!

My first visit I must admit to being mildly curious but after about 20 minutes in there I came to the conclusion that it's just a load of old tat.
Mrs B is, however, still under the misapprehension that if she goes enough times she will find the Ark of the Covenant.
It really is the only time on holiday that we seriously disagree.

1 cheesecake at the Blue cafe Fethiye people watching
2 Ocakbashi dinner on the first night
3 cocktail ( or 2) on the buzz bar terrace
4 Friday fruit and veg market ( love it when a trip falls with an arrival time on A Thursday so I can stock up)
5 learning a new set of Turkish words, last year was vegetable related ( including carrots, red and green cabbage, carrots lettuce, onion and many others)

Totally rock and roll

My alltime favourite was directed to my husband, by a young man selling 'designer' boxers, " Hey baldy we even got big b*****k size"

How rude :o

After years and years of cheaper than Asda price/Tesco and the usual rubbish (nothing being more irritating than "Yes please", WTF does that mean) - I was surprised to hear one guy calling out "Cheaper than shopping". I'm not even sure that is possible.

I like the tactic in Fethiye old Town " Hello i don`t want to sell you anything"  8)

The market is only for a pancake and some lovely freshly squeezed juices now.

Well for the last few years I refuse to go anywhere near the clothes stalls but am happy to mooch around the food stalls to stock up at both the Fethiye and the one off of the Antalya road markets.

Our local market at Hisaronu is a complete waste of time, just full of crap in my opinion and once you have heard all the normal sad one liners I fail to see why anyone would go back.

I find it strange that the stall holders/staff think that these "catch phrases" are funny and will draw people the their lovely goods, mind you maybe in some cases it does  ;)

Assuming the thread is about habits, and not 'must do's, here are ours !

1.   Stop on the way from the airport, at the layby outside Gunluklu - to admire the view, sit on the wall, have a drink and take in the stunning view.  Even at night...we stop and take a deep breath....we are home  :)
2.   Depending on flight times.......head straight into Fethiye for the first 'Pasha' of the holiday
3.  Mr Pookie - first morning -  visit to Ramazan our lovely village barber for a haircut and 'de-fuzzing'  !
4.  Stock up with fruit and veg from the local market
5.  Stock up with Efes
6.  Stock up with charcol

Then........bring it on....we are prepared for anything   ;) :D
(oh, almost forgot   7.  Visit Sultan's and stock up........)

"a shave round the corner "

Careful Scunner! Some of those corners should not be shaved under any circumstances  ;)

1. First night trip to the Birlik (whatever it's called now it will always be the Birlik to me)

2. Bike ride to Melissa's in Ciftlik to stock up with beer and food - delivered free of course. I couldn't balance with all that beer!

3. At least one night out in Guven's - probably 3 or 4 actually. Plus a few 'stop offs' there on our way home from wherever we have eaten that night.

4. Bike ride to Fethiye down the new prom, drink on the front and (un)steady ride back. Great now that you can miss out the main road and all those mad drivers  :)

5. Night out in Fethiye and the boat taxi back.

If my dad and I are shopping around Fethiye, he quickly throws them by saying 'You just have' then smiles and we carry on walking and looking around. I imagine the poor guy is still scratching his head over that by the time we've walked round the corner.

Will probably only go to the market for fruit and veg as dad needs my limited Turkish skills and for a delicious gozleme and juice. Yum   :)

I very much like how we all have one related with food on the lists. Definitely creatures of habit with the grub haha

My habits are -

1. walk along the promenade to see changes and meet old friends
2. visit fish market
3. walk along promenade into Fethiye and think every time that the views are still as good as I have ever seen anywhere
4. sit in the garden and contemplate my navel and wonder why the hell I haven't retired and then I could stay as long as I wanted !!

My/our habits are:
1. First day wander down to Olu for a day at the beach and to see the changes and just unwind.
2. Wander around H to see the changes and catch up with friends
3. Catch up with friends out in Kaya
4. chill, sunbathe, chill, drink, chill, sunbathe and so on and so forth.

We didnt go last year so very much looking forward to going this year (in 6 weeks!) each year I say lets not go to the markets, but each year we do, and come out sweating and regretting that we went! lol. The only funny thing is the locals saying to my other half 'hey sexy baldy' (makes me giggle anyway, because it doesnt him!)

Many many years ago the first thing we used to do was drop off our cases in the house and get straight round to the Ernur for a nice cold Efes and catch up with our good friends, Pearl, Ronnie, Celal and Cemal and not forgetting the chef Zeki - who did a wonderful "Special Chicken with little chilli!' Those were the days!! Sadly the Ernur no longer exists as we knew it and we wouldn't be seen dead in the place now. Have really find memories though - remember the CBF get together you organised Keith, it was a great day!! It was also the first time I ever set eyes on Teo - what a sight for sore eyes!!! Thought I'd died and gone to heaven!!!

Yes it was the first and without doubt the best CBF annual party - the Ernur did us proud with food & drink. Remember the next one? The nicest man on CBF got thrown out!

They were such great days at the Ernur back then, I remember them very fondly. I even stayed there when I went out alone. Sadly nothing lasts forever and it ended for me when R&P's business partner ripped off my friend who was visiting us from the UK, right in front of me.

Ah that wasn't George that got thrown out - he was just as ever the gentleman and left with me after I had that terrible altercation with that vile man from Orange - I think he thought that he could speak to foreign women the way he speaks to Turkish but I gave him short shrift!!! Hence I was non too politely asked to leave, but I was already on my way!!
I'd forgotten about the problem you had with 'a certain person' at the Ernur!! It was a shame coz Ronnie was a great fella - a real character and is sadly missed.

Yes he was a character, we sat at that bar sorting out the world's problems many times.

The other guy I certainly did have a problem with! I remember the first time I ever went to (or even heard of) the Ernur was the day of the notorious "ice cream incident" and George took me across there. There was a time when the Ernur was the fullest hotel in all of Calis and people like you and people like me helped make that happen - not for any commission or payment, because we wanted to help make it a success.

To have the person who's hotel is full of people you recommended to it rip off your mate from England is not acceptable behaviour!

I sometimes forget, I never forgive   ;)

My firsts for each time we visit calis are:
Drinking on Rimms balcony till I can just about make it up the stairs to bed.
Trip to Talos.
Trip on water taxi to Fethiye.
Meal in the fish market.
Wander up to Gunlukbasi Road and taking in the sights, sounds and smells.
Bit best of all is seeing the Rimms after months of talking on ft to them.

Jim's are:
Pint of Effes waiting on gatepost.
Mozaik Bache meze - sensational
Fish market, as always
Barbers for shave and the works on the Gunlukbasi Road.
Sun Dial = Time to say goodbye.
