Funny thing I noticed yesterday. Over the last month or so I have visited a local pub that is part of a major chain and have seen the "show" put on for Paddy's Day and similar for St David's Day, dragon burger etc
Yesterday evening I popped in with a friend and was suppries that there was nothing to indicate that it was St George's Day, not a single flag or anything......oh except a St George & Dragon ale.
I might add that this is in Greater London.
What does this say to you?
-
That he was a Palestinian ?
-
I knew because Google told me, otherwise no!!
-
I thought he was half turkish........ ;)
-
Yes, and half Palestinian (by parentage) and born in Palestine.
I always remember St. George's Day, it's my birthday :)
-
Actually maybe not half Turkish, as there was no Turkey back then of course. His father was maybe Anatolian or Asia Minorian ;) - Colwyn will know :)
-
According to Wiki, both his parents were Greek - his father from Cappadocia; and his mother from the Greek city of Lydda in Palestine. It further says that he was an officer in the Roman army. The nationality of the dragon is not known.

Maybe we should rename it St. Scunners Day

In my town the displaying of the St Georges cross was banned as it may be offensive to our Muslim and Polish bretheren !Unfortunately I think people take in water because of the association with far right groups,I think in a democracy we should be able to celebrate without offending.Tell an irishman he cant celebrate Paddys day !

Are you talking about South Shields, Steve? If the flag of St George is banned there how come the local council was criticized for not flying it at half mast for Mrs T funeral - because it was still flying proudly at the top of the flag pole? "The flag of St George is flown above South Shields Town Hall every day of the year" (SouthTyneside.info, 23 April 2013). Are you sure you haven't fallen for an urban myth?
-
Will check but have it on good authority it was taken down Colwyn.
-
You must be right Colwyn,I have obviously fallen for some Facebook ****e ;

Blimey Steve, council buildings all dressed up, flags and hats handed out to schoolkids, Boy Scouts marching along - S.Shield must have looked like a St G flag tsunami.

Always fly the flag on the day- very proud to be English.

Spent it at a brbq in a bar decked out with St Georges flags. In Murcia :)

I only realised it was St. Georges day walking through Chester city centre, it looked like one of the primary schools had organised a re-enactment of the story with some performers, looked like they were enjoying themselves.
It really does seem that it's not as noticeable as I've gotten older, remember trips to nice gardens to watch plays and get the face painted etc. Though as a uni student I struggle to remember most days of the week anyway :D
