Title: Visa Expiry - What Would Happen
Post by: Scunner on April 24, 2013, 19:22:44 PM
I believe I do understand the 90/180 day visa rules :D

This is a "what do you think would happen" question...

Say if you bought a visa on arrival today and therefore 180 days is up on October 20th. What would happen if you arrived at Dalaman on the 20th October? Number of days irrelevant (nowhere near 90 in the 180) - just arriving on the expiry date.

Cheers!

I believe you have to have a 24 hour gap between the renewal. i.e you cannot go to Rhodes and come back on the same day any more, if you are renewing the visa.

I assume you'd have to buy another because on the 21st you'd be there without a valid visa and the Pasaport Polis would pick this up when they scanned your passport.

Who knows what would happen!  Officially you should be refused entry as you must be out of Turkey or leave on the 180th day and not apply for a further visa until the 181st day but people are reporting that they have been buying another visa on entry just as they did before.

What do you think would happen?

What do you think would happen?

I think technically the visa hasn't expired till the next day and therefore a new visa cannot be issued.

But what I actually think would happen is you'd get a new visa and nobody would be that bothered  :)

Yep I am sure another visa is a must, it's just that the rules say you can't buy a visa while holding a current one - even if it expires hours later :D

So, sit in arrivals 'til it turns midnight and then buy one ?

Well yes I suppose if it was that close you could do that :D

So let's make that a little less practical - what would actually happen if your 180 days is up on 20th October and you arrived for a holiday on the 18th and bought a new visa?

The immigration don't know when you bought your visa. I think if you presented your passport to the visa guy he would just stick in another stamp, then the passport polis look for an unstamped visa and just stamp it.

I think when they open up your passport and scan it, it must tell them when I bought my last visa.

You would just have to take your chance.  Problem is, you wouldn't be able to wait until midnight and then buy another visa because they wouldn't allow you to 'land' as they say.  Then again you will get the guy who just lets anything go, just like everywhere.  I just don't think this is a situation where you rely on 'luck'.  Stick to the rules and you have no worries.

The immigration don't know when you bought your visa.

It's of no interest at all to the people who stick the stamp in but when you get to the Pasaport Polis desk you'll be surprised at just how much they DO know about you and your trips to a from Turkey.

A few years ago one of our friends lost her passport and was concerned about what would happen when she left Turkey because she'd be unable to show a visa stamp on the temporary passport issued by the British Consulate. She queried it at the Pasaport Polis office in Fethiye and they gave her a print-out of all her entries and exits over the past 10 years. Türk büyük kardeş.

I met two people last year who both bought a visa on their second visit within the 180 days because they didn't realise the first one was for 180 days and nobody stopped them or said anything.

I once bought a visa by mistake when it was still the 90 days one and after the guy put it in he said you already have a visa. I said oh can I have my £10 back? No was the answer so I had 2 valid visas at the same time.
Then last year I HAD to purchase a new one at Istanbul whilst the other one was still valid  and nothing was said.
I don't think they really care if you buy one before another runs out.
Doesn't answer your question though Scunner!

As I mentioned in another topic on residencey application, our neighbour purchased another visa with 7 days left on the old one. After a few phone calls the passport police in fethiye (they were applying for residencey) accepted it was not their fault and fined them 110tl. They said Dalaman should not have issued a new visa.

It used to be ,with the older system, if you came for two weeks and you only had one week on your visa, then they gave you another one.

As far as information is concerened, when I went for my residency last year, the first since 1999, they asked how my father ,Jack was and my Mother. That was at the Belidiya office. Many people employed to put the old paperwork details into the computer system.

We have some friends who came in on a 180 day visa on April 15th - they will return to the UK after Approx 25 days here.

They then return in early September until mid November.

So when the current 180 days runs out on Oct 15th - can they buy a new visa on entry in September (probably not) - go to passport polis to buy a new visa or do they have to leave the country for a couple of days and then return from say Rhodes etc and buy a new one on the way back into the country?

We thought our visa had run out so we brought another
One when we got passport stamp bit he scanned our passport and looked
For our last visa and stamped it and
Left the new visa unstamped which I am thinking starts
The next time we come to Turkey when it is then stamped ...

On our last visit we arrived on the day our Visas expired. I must admit to being nervous but could not change the flight. Went to the Visa desk and got a new Visa then through immigration no problem. Maybe we were lucky.

Mrs B needed to renew her passport before we went in April. Her old one had a valid visa but we obviously had to get her a new one.
As the visa is a sticker I cant see how the passport polis can 'electronically' check when you bought it. Surely the computer only shows your ins and outs.

If they don't have any record of when you bought it, the whole 90/180 nature of that little sticker wouldn't be workable or policeable (should such a word even exist). How can you know how many days in 180 someone has spent in Turkey if you have no record of when the 180 days even started...

I think that the no of days in 180 etc is worked out by the polis not the computer, otherwise they wouldn't sit there counting on their fingers to see if you have enough time left or not for your holiday.

Call me a dreamer and anorak Paul but I picture a technological miracle that shows the passport guy a whole host of information on a screen in front of him, all gleaned from that little moment when he scans your passport  :)

Yes, and I've been fortunate enough to see it after our Kangal snacked on my passport.
