Title: Machette Attack
Post by: tinkerman on April 28, 2013, 20:59:17 PM
I make no apologies for reporting this but have to say this is VERY rare >:(

About 5pm yesterday two young lads were riding down to Calis, on their first night here, to watch the rugby, they got as far as the new upside down bridge and were ambushed by four Turkish guys on two motorbikes, they came either side of them and brandished a machette and waved it at them.
The lads escaped them but are now frightened to go out for the rest of their holiday >:(, We guess the motive was robbery as they had two bottles of spirits in the baskets on their bike for someone.

The police were called and were making a sweep of the area, they were described as 18-22 year olds, the guy with the machette had a whispy beard and a scar on his cheek, one of the motor bikes were red.

Like I said very rare but please be on your guard.

I feel really sorry for the two young lads.  I hope they can be persuaded this is not the norm and go onto enjoy their time here if they aren't already trying to book the first available flight back home.

Poor lads, they must've been scared out of their wits.
It's time something was done about the motor bike thugs, rare or not it's not what any of us want to hear.
We were pelted with eggs last year by lads on two bikes.  Looks like they've upped their game for this season.

What low life scum bags to do that I hope they are caught real soon.....hope the two lads can go on to enjoy Calis....It has made me so cross as I was on the receiving end of something quite a few years back whilst sunbathing at our pool and it can blooming well traumatise you for a long while and mine did not include a machette.. I am sure you have done a good job Andy in reasurring the lads this is hopefully a one off...
Mind you like Anne said something needs to be done as that egg pelting could not have been very pleasant either....

Hope the lads were ok Andy, I was down the canal yesterday afternoon with my Nikon camera, I might have to think twice and give the kingfishers a miss in the future, or alternatively buy a gun !

After many years of living here the only real problem  i have is the complete lack of police in calis. This is such an easy target area for scum like the biker boys. You can not feel easy knowing things like this are starting to happen.Tourist areas always have and should have a strong police presents to make the people feel protected in a strange place as most people are out of their comfort zone when on holiday. This would never happen in Fethiye....

I find this post very scarey.  Any holdiay makers reading this are going to well put off. Often out and about on my bike with all sorts of stuff in my basket and choose the canal path as Baris Manco is so awful, had 2 punctures in a month.  I really hope the police are trying their hardest to trace these guys but not holding my breath.

Why 'sad'?
People read it. Heed it.
That was your intention, surely?

How frightening, let's hope these lowlife's get caught, it's so unfair how these minority types can spoil things for the majority of us law abiding citizens.  Poor lad's, let's hope they have others they can go out with in a group and can still go out and make the most of their holiday.  I think if this happened to me I would be traumatised for life! when we first ever stayed in Calis there were always police on foot to be seen especially along the seafront they stopped all bikes from being ridden along there, but we never see any now with the exception of the motorbike police that occassionally ride down late at night.

The most shocking thing for me is that the bar stewards didn't do it in some ill lit alley, but in broad daylight in a public area.  Glad to hear that they went back, but it does concern me when two lads have to take a taxi home at night now, what chance pensioners, women alone etc.

Another reason to add to a growing list for people not to come to Turkey/Calis

Prices

Dug up roads and paths

Now a growing sense of insecurity

All of which can be addressed, but I'm not sure anyone is listening.

Surely that can't be much more this year of Turkey/Calis shooting itself in the foot.......

Such a scare for two young lads, mind yu it would not be a pleasant experience for anyone of any age, thank goodness they were not hurt! My youngest daughter is booking a holiday with her friend for Calis next year, on their own, they will be 19, bit of a worry to be honest. Hollie wants to go to Calis as she knows it well & feels safe. On saying that i do think this is a very rare occurrence, and if you compare to somewhere like Spain, where this is a regular occurrence it helps to put things into perspective. Thanks for the warning ....

It is dreadful and very scary, but on balance I would still feel safer there than many places in the UK, which is a sad state of affairs

They sound like they may be fairly hapless chancers (not that it wouldn't be a fright, I'm sure it would be). It's further evidence of the large damage a tiny number of people can do over there. Let's hope they get caught soon - hopefully while trying to "hold up" the wrong people.

I vaguely remember years ago asking what weapons were legally allowed to be carried and was told a jelly knife. Any changes yet Scunner?

And I still came back  ;)

It is these isolated and rare incidents where news of them spread like wildfire and is not something there area needs.

I am not sure that the police will be able to find out who they were if this was a one off but they need to find the and punish them severely as a warning to any other chancres that it is not worth trying this kind of stunt :(

Poor lads ,what a start to a holiday, the problem is that you will never convince them this is a rare incident.

can you buy pepper spray or personal attack alarms or dye sprays and such like ?

Peper spray available at the gun shops around the Fethiye market.

Be very careful with pepper spray - it can be taken from you and used against you - and also can blow straight back in your face when used (you won't have any time to check wind direction).

Best I think is a rape alarm, people don't half run when an alarm goes off.

And I'm wondering how you know that ?
Title: Re: Machette Attack

Because when someone tried to break into our house, messing with the window set the alarm off. In the time it took me to get from the bed to the window, the would-be intruder had made it 50 metres to the end of the road and I just saw his head as he turned the corner.

An alarm definitely helps people run in the opposite direction, very fast   ;)

I agree with you Keith in the wrong hands but Iam trained and proficient in the use of such sprays and other deadly arts!

Why Tinx? What do you want us to say? It's awful and 280+ people have read it and been warned.

Personally I didn't reply because nothing surprises me any more - wherever you are in this world.

Only way to reduce incidents like this is a bigger police presence but I won't hold my breath.

Thanks for the warning anyway. We are always careful late at night and usually get a taxi home. I hope they catch the scumbags!

When  I was in Calis last Aug I  did see Police on motorbikes on the prom,  and police on the main street  during the evenings which I found reassuring.  I appreaciate the  news in that it will make me  think twice going down any dark streets this year.(take the same precautions as I do at home) Just glad the lads were not attacked  and hope they can salvage their holiday.

This is really quite scarey for young lads or anyone.  We had an egg throwing from scooter incident one night last Autumn (they missed!) and it is unnerving, so goodness only knows how the boys felt with the machete.  Thanks for the warning and we will take care when walking around at night in Calis.  Glad to know the lads are getting on with their holiday and hope that this has been a rare occurrence.

I totally agree with Scunner on the use of 'Screech Alarms', I made sure all my female staff in the UK had them to hand, especially when away from the office. Nobody ignores them.

Just bought 3 alarms one for daughter, one for wife and one to leave in villa for guests.Better to be safe etc...But remember this is not  a Calis phenomenem I have travelled far and wide and feel as safe in Calis as I do anywhere .I have been accosted /approached many, many times all over the world and have always managed to extricate mysel;f and family from the situation without too much bother at all.

I bet I spelled phenomenemomeman wrong !

This IS terrible but to say 'attack' would imply that someone has been physically attacked. This was a 'threat' more than an attack and I know that regardless, this is a shocking and unacceptable situation and must have been terrifying for the people concerned.
