Title: Homemade Mosquito Trap - easy peasy
Post by: nichola on May 01, 2013, 09:54:51 AM
Homemade Mosquito Trap borrowed from Facebook...

(http://s2.postimg.org/qzfj3yjhx/mosi_trap.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/qzfj3yjhx/)

Items needed

1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1.5 litre bottle

Method

1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

I've seen this on Facebook too and would absolutely love to know if it actually works. Seems plausible apart from the fact I saw it on Facebook :D

Think we may give it a go in the absence of any spraying as yet by the council in spite of repeated requests/demands that they get the flipping hell on with it.

Our kid who lives abroad showed me a picture of a machine that produces CO2 and it was unbelievable, the muslin bag attached to the machine would trap about 10lbs of mossies each day (this was in India by the way) this looks good but the only thing I'm unsure about, if you use it where you sit then you will attract mossies to that area, if you use it where you don't sit !!!!!!!

Is it ok with dried yeast or does it have to be fresh? Sounds promising!

Also saw this on FB, no idea if it works but it's simpler than the bottles!

Have a mosquito problem??? At your next outdoor gathering try this SAFE and EFFECTIVE method of keeping mosquitoes at bay! Simply slice a lime in half and press in a good amount of cloves for an ALL NATURAL mosquito repellent...

I tried that once Supercabby only I used lemons, hung on the bedstead, I don't know if it worked or not as we definitely weren't bitten  but I forgot the next time we were there and we weren't bitten that time! Worth a try folks.

Problem is that you can't get many limes here and when you can they are super expensive and I wouldn't waste them on catching mossies... 8)
