4 Flights from/to Edinburgh: £1,785.48
4 Flights from/to Manchester to same destination, same dates: £741.88
Saving: £1043.60
Extra driving time over Edinburgh: 4 hours
That means I am being paid £ 260.90 an hour to drive a car. (less fuel, and a 44 MPG that isn't a huge deduction)
Not a small saving is it :)

Indeed. But think of the money saving if you all stayed at home.
-
That's what I'm using to pay for it :D

Scots have always had to pay higher prices for flights/holidays than the rest of the UK. The tour operator and flight companies say it's down to 'demand' - NO way. If they offered flights from Scotland at comparable costs, to other UK airports, the flights would be full. You can fly from Glasgow to Poland for less than £25, so the Poles take regular trips, proving the point that if you make travel affordable then more people will travel. Turkey IS a popular destination and I speak to many people who have decided to go elsewhere simply because the flights are too expensive from Scotland.

I have never been on a Scotland to Dalaman flight that wasn't full.
-
Scunner - you forgot about the return trip - so your down to £130.45 per hour - but still a pretty decent hourly wage.
-
I do the return journey free Jim.
You are quite correct of course.

nothing from Newcastle? we got our cheapest flights to date from there this year , It depends on days you travel
Ron

Scotland's favourite Airport - Newcastle. I'm not joking either, everyone we have met from long term car park shuttle to check in queue to plane has been Scottish.
Our dates were pretty specific Ron, Newcastle is a lovely drive for us and closer than Manchester. We have flown to Spain and Portugal from there but sadly nothing on this occasion.

Flights are always fully booked up in Scotland, particularly Aberdeen. Couple of Wedding guests last year tried to get Aberdeen for September it was six weeks before and no lucky they had to go to Glasgow.
People like us who don't have the time to drive to Manchester as it would mean my husband having to take extra days off work to travel. However, if he took early retirement and had a lot of spare time we would do this and maybe stay over in the Lakes for a couple of days on the way back.
I was speaking to my son this week and saying he might get a cheaper flight from Glasgow, and he said "Who wants to drive all the way back from Glasgow after getting off the plane?". I will not mention Manchester to him, his head might explode. :o ;)

Tell him I will pay him £1,043 to drive to Manchester and back. I bet if he is honest he'd accept. He'd probably do it daily given the chance and earn £380,695 a year. A better question is who wants to pay a grand more to fly from a local airport? I certainly wouldn't, for the sake of a few hours driving. The money I save goes directly into holiday spends so no complaints from anyone.

I know Scunner, I have explaned that to him. I also remember him driving down to Newcastle a few years ago. However, now I cannot change his mind. I think once he has children he will have a different view of things..

We are flying from Glasgow in Sept, the fares from ABZ were really expensive, flying from GLW for the 4 of us we are saving approx £ 250 and that is including paying for parking etc, dont mind driving to GLW as straight road and approx 2.5 hrs.
-
Does your car not have a steering wheel Jim? :D

We flew from Glasgow last December on a last minute package deal to Madeira We went with Thomson's and they offered us an Hotel near the airport for an overnight stay, transport to the airport (and back again the next week) and secure car parking for the week. The total cost was £40.00. We thought that a total bargain.

Not entirely true I can fly from Glsgow in August for about £70 each less than Manchester.

I used to live 15 minutes drive from Luton Airport. My colleague used to live 15 minutes drive from Stansted Airport. Every year, he used to fly on holiday from Luton, and us from Stansted. Aviation Sod's Law.
