Title: Advice from the adults please :)
Post by: Miss.M on May 13, 2013, 19:43:01 PM
I like to think I can cook, however tonight I went for a simple meal of scrambled egg and small potato pieces. Got some new baby potatoes, washed them, cut them into little chunks and cooked them in a little bit of sunflower oil in the pan.

Dinner all ready I had a potato chunk and it seemed a little undercooked in the middle. Asked the housemates if you can eat slightly undercooked potato. Immediately told no you can't and that it makes you ill. Proceeded to cook the potatoes more and more until nearly carbon and ate them. However I know you can eat potato raw, it's just the green bits that are a problem and sure that there weren't any on the ones I ate.

Can a responsible adult please confirm if I'm going to get ill  or not please? Thought the forum would be the place for the quickest answer   :)

Btw the scrambled egg was lovely   :D

Haha Toky! I'll risk taking Scunner's word for now   :)

I read on the internet that people do that Loz, said that to the housemate but she proceeded to tell how her uncle nearly died from eating undercooked potato. Therefore the need to confirm haha. What are they like raw?

When I worked as a fruit and veg man I was always told it was the green spuds that were bad for you.

Raw spud is OK but not to my taste.

Don't worry (and if you are I'll as I type then obviously I was told the wrong info)

I don't think it's going to make you ill but it wouldn't taste very nice...  Unless you like raw potato of course.   ;D  If you want to fry potatoes from raw you're better off not using new potatoes which are a bit waxy.  Go for a white potato or a maris piper.  Mind you, I like new potatoes and they're really good for you so just par-boiling them first will sort it.

Undercooked potatoes can be dangerous in the event that they remain too hard and lodge in your throat. This happened to me recently.
No problem as long as you have a friend who can perform the Heimlich manoeuvre.

We used to eat raw potatoes when my mum was making chips, we loved them. There was a scare once when it was said that pregnant mothers shouldn't eat green potatoes because it could cause spina bifida in the new born. Not sure how true that is.
