A friend recently had a holiday Ortakent and found there was no-one who could cash his travellers cheques. He had to travel 40 minutes to Bodrum to cash them and was charged commission. Having always cashed his cheques with Gerbuz at Onur when in Calis, he was concerned to hear that Gerbuz has left and asked me to find out if there is anyone who will cash travellers cheques in Calis and do they charge commission.

I think you'll find that Traveller's Cheques have had their day. Most people now bring cash or use their credit / debit cards to withdraw Pounds Sterling at ATMs and then change them at various jewellers and shops in the area that offer very good rates.
-
Has Gerbuz gone ??
He was certainly there at the beginning of May - but his shop was being refurbished because of water damage caused by a leaking tap over the winter.
I had a beer with him and he told me he was coming to England for a couple of weeks to sort out his UK business Visa as he was opening a shop in Brighton - but he did say that his Calis shop would be open as normal ............

There is a thread on here somewhere Phil that mentions Gerbuz is in Uk and what was happening re his shop, sorry can not remember what it came under but if you do a search with his name in it will hopefully bring it up for you :)

Thanks to those who answered my question. Having just arrived home from Calis I am now able to answer the question for anyone else who is interested. As my bank charges for using my card abroad but I can buy travellers cheques without being charged commission I prefer to use TQs. The good news is you can still cash TQs at Zumrut commission free and are given the same rate as if exchanging cash. Do not go to the official change place a couple of doors down as they charge 4% commission.

What are TQs ?
-
Travellers CheQues?
-
Why not TCs then ?
-
Raki moment, mayhap ?? :o
-
Or a pretentious moment ?
-
Sorry, it's a banking term.
-
Bankers eh ? Don't ya jus' luv 'em ! ;)
-
Having read the thread from the beginning I thought it very clear what the term "TQs" meant.
I also found it refreshing that some one who has made so few posts is offering money saving tips to holidaying members.
I haven't personally used Travellers Cheques (TQs) for years. However I've noticed that some of my more senior visitors are reluctant to use ATMs or carry relatively large sums of cash.
After reading some of the historic threads on the potential dangers of using cash machines in Calis the use of TQs (See,the term is growing on me! ;)) might indeed be a prudent way for the more vulnerable visitor to access holiday cash.
Thank you for your helpful advice Mrs T

Interesting that the official exchange in Calis are charging 4%
Has anyone else noticed the signs outside their shop and on a few lamposts saying that its illegal
( and against the law) to change money anywhere except banks and official exchange premises?
I can't find anything anywhere online to verify this. Am tempted each time I walk by to ask them to show me where this is stated.
Maybe we all should ask!
Their rate is always lower than anyone else too.

As someone who falls readily into the more senior visitor category I used to take a mixture of travellers cheques and money up until a couple of years ago. Always changed at Zumrut without any problem.
-
We use Zumrut too to change money and have also have bought jewellery from Sedat. Since the Change Office opened all the other places who change money such as Zumrut are not allowed to advertise money changing, but we noted Sedat always gives a better rate than the Change Office.
Re Travellers Cheques. When my daughter and I went to New York for the first time together about 9 years ago we decided it best to take Travellers Cheques for safety reasons. Once we arrived we took the travellers cheques to a Bank in Wall Street, they asked us did we have an account with them? we didn't so they would not change them. We tried several more banks and got the same answer. We started to panic.
When we returned to our Hotel we asked at the enquiries desk and the assistant agreed to ring around for us and she did find a Bank in Madison Square Gardens who would change them. We just went and changed the whole lot and put the money in our room safe. We vowed never to get T.C's again.

Last time we were in Dalyan we could only change money at the PTT, the rule about money changing seemed to be quite strictly abided by.
