We have friends that have just returned from Calis, and they have told us that the price increases are mad this year..
They say they could not find a can of efes in supermarkets for less than 4lira, and the Antitepe wine for 1 litre bottles were 17lira... Is this true ?
Not sure they were shopping in the right shops for the best deals as we do, but am curious to know if things have really increased that much.

They've been using the EPKH Index.

I have just gone through a lot more money in Hisaronu than previous years.
There were 5 of us though as opposed to our usual 4 but the visits to the ATM were more frequent.
I think food has gone up a bit but we were still getting a good main meal in somewhere like Castello for £6.50 -12 (£12 being a proper fillet steak with sauce etc) the sting is the drinks prices, now my lot are older they were drinking more.
6-7 tl for a beer and 6-7 tl for a large soft drink in most places.
On the flip side we had a great 50th night out for Mrs B with the restaurant throwing in a cake and a bottle of Turkish champers with 3 courses and plenty of drinks for £100 for the 5 of us.

I thought this forum was all about members asking questions and receiving informative answers about calis.
if somebody wants to ask the price of beer wines cigarettes whats the problem? You should be ok to ask anything without getting a sarcastic comment back.

i agree some comments we can do without
-
We're needing to go to cash line tomorrow as we've run out of money to change. We brought quite a bit more spends than in previous holidays. It's just disappeared faster this time.
-
I agree Chariste and Puma. Sarcastic comments put people off and knock confidence. It is a forum.

I still find Turkey very cheap
-
Are you a tourist littlereddevil? Some things still are fairly cheap in comparison to UK bit without a doubt, there's a substantial hike in food and drink this year. Percentage wise, it's a huge jump. Things don't go up a couple of kurus, they are rising 40-50%. You'd get lynched at home for raising prices at that rate. All said though, we're fortunate enough that it hasn't spoilt our holiday in any way.
-
I just compare prices with what I'd pay at home. Some restaurants in Fethiye eg the Samdan and Nefis Pide a re the same price they have been for years
-
I agree prices have risen ...but acknowledge the fact they have at home too.
We had a great two weeks holiday but accept the fact that Turkey is no longer cheap-cheaper than the UK but not cheap anymore :(
-
We were in Fethiye a few days ago and John had 3 beautifully seasoned strips of chicken breast
(so nice I asked for the recipe which they gave me!)
It came with...no surprise rice chips and salad and bread, and cay on the house 6tl!
I wasnt hungry and only had 2 cay, which was still on the house.
Restaurant was round the back of the culture centre area. Called Donercim.
Excellent meals can still be found off the tourist trail, you don't get the views, but you get good honest home cooked food and it feels like the Fethiye we fell in love with.
-
We were also in Fethiye a week or so ago and had been doing a bit of running around and needed to eat so found a little place with a few tables outside so chose to get a table there.
They have the usual chicken half bread and wrap but we noticed a set menu which had 2 choices, they both came with stuffed vine leaves as a starter, I havd the white bean stew and my other half had the chicken, we have a large basket of break, rice each and a bowl of yogurt and cucumber. Large bottle of water and 2 cay and all for TL11 best value we had and very tasty.
Still some excellent places to eat for simple good food if you avoid the tourist spot......mmm
-
It really does depend on what you want. we just love being there, and so our main priority on every holiday is to eat good food as cheaply as we can, we are not fussy, location is the least of our priorities, a cheap cafe on a street corner watching the world go by is all the entertainment I need to be honest. I don't drink alcohol so I am a cheap date anyway!! 5 lira for a lovely bowl of soup, fresh bread and a salad, and a 75 kurus ice lolly for dessert, (or Sutlac if I'm really pushing the boat out) Yum. roll on next Friday!!
-
Thanks to all that have bothered to make helpful comments, and NO our holiday is not all about Efes and wine :)
Think we will gauge this ourselves when we arrive.
-
Dont forget that the xchange rate is 2.90tl to the pound here so you will get more lira to spend anyway... Efes in bottles is 3.50 on the Gunlukbasi road and in Tasyaka... Its still available in some bars for 5tl.... We hardly ever eat in a tourist restaurant because they are over priced and over rated. 2 chicken half breadswith salad and ayran 5tl for both...in Fethiye... Gunusik and The Meeting Poiunt are still very good value because they are not on the front.. Both serve the best food anyway in my opinion... If you want Pizza you cant get any better than The Nil Bar... We had spicy beef Pizza last week which was the best we have ever eaten here including The Italian ones. Dominos etc... Full of tender steak 18Tl.....
-

I think the changes in price of these two items tells you a hell of a lot about a country's economy and status.
-
Best pizza in the Nil bar ?,give over Anne it is not in the same class as Aydin pide ,any lokanta in Guna,i do admire your loyalty to your friends resturant.
-
I don't think there is any argument that Turkey is no longer the VFM holiday it was even just a few short years back. I have seen 2 different newspaper reports recently showing the cost of a basket of products popular with holidaymakers, in both examples Turkey was second highest with Spain & Portugal being nearly 50% cheaper. If you factor in the cost of flights comparable to some of the other destinations then I feel Turkey is indeed is in real danger of pricing itself out of the game.
Twice last week I spent several hours in the afternoon on the promenade and also yesterday between 4 & 6pm. and I can tell you that it was deserted, in fact we both said that we have seen it looking busier during the winter, yesterday very few on the beach and virtually every restaurant was empty. I've said it before, the alarm bells are ringing, but unfortunately, nobody seems to be listening.
-
Hisaronu the same.... quietest ever first 5/6 weeks of the season... many more `bar/ restaurant casualties` predicted by the end of october
-
forgot to mention the near empty 15 sunglasses and watches shops all within a radius of 30 metres .... and not forgetting the 25 near empty clothes shops in the same radius ...... 12 trip agents... 6 tattooists... 8 hairdressers....plus the multitude of bars/ night clubs, and restaurants and snack bars.... too many to count ..... all chasing fewer customers... its all going to end in tears for many
-
And that is the situation regarding people who would have booked long before the 'troubles' in the major cities. Nobody needs to tell me how it shouldn't affect places like Fethiye. But sadly, it will.
-
Spot on Keith, the visitor numbers fall here year on year but rather than try and identify the root cause, a blame culture sets in, so far we've had everything from Chinese Flu to the Earthquake, next year no doubt it will be the roads.
-
I wonder if it is isolated to the Fethiye area or if the likes of Marmaris, Altinkum and Bodrum are all suffering as well.
From figures published on the Fethiye Times site for Mugla:-
British visitors for the first six months of 2012 are 60,000 down on last year.
The actual figures for British tourists in the first six months of the year are: 2010 – 594k; 2011 – 522k; 2012 – 462.5k.
That is a fair drop.
