Very powerful images and rework of a very famous song - listen with the sound on!
Moving in it's own right but stunning because it was written and performed by a Turkish guy - in fact a Turkish friend of our Turkish friend. To produce this in someone else's language is sensational - and once again the images are breathtaking, some literally.
Please watch and share.
Thanks.

Simply stunning - so many powerful images but the one at 3:36 is the one I "like" the most.
-
Really powerful and a warning to any government that tries to crush the right of its population to peacefully protest.

Brilliantly put together and hard hitting. Very worrying times. RTE "the leader" has just called for two mass rallies of his AKP supporters to counter what is going on,but I don't think they will get teargassed. !!!. The next couple of weeks could be horrific, but I hope i'm wrong. I'll be sharing this and many others.Good luck to those who want change, very brave people.

Heartbreaking to watch but very well done...
-
Hi Mike, hope you're ok. I would imagine you're watching the events in Istanbul closely. Incredible scenes.
-
I already loved the Turks but now I have found a whole new respect for the people.
-
Not Istanbul, but my daughter messaged me to say she was at a Turkish demonstration in Trafalgar Square yesterday.
Her words were "well I say demonstrating, more like dancing really"
"They're pulling people up to join them, a group of young girls near me looked well confused"
Yep, gotta love the Turks!
-
Truly Amazing, very sad, but truly Amazing.
-
:'( :'( :'(

These protests seem to be producing a great deal of music, photography and humour - including copying RTE by calling their protest çapul (looting/plundering).

When we see small snippets in the news, it doesn't look as bad as it does when you see this. I have friends who live in Istanbul and they are really passionate about the wrongs that are being heaped on the country and it's people. This started out as a peaceful demonstration which escalated into violence because of police intervention. Even Gul stated that the police went in too heavy handed. Thanks for the video. I hope that the 'goal' is achieved.

One thing I am particularly interested in hearing is the views of our Turkish friends over there rather than political or journalistic takes on the situation.
So far, on the subject of the future - the combined view of good, everyday Turks that I know is that Erdogan is irrepairably damaged. He is finished, but his actual end will be a slow process.
-
Thank you for posting that Keith. Deeply moving .
-
Also a very interesting and frighteningly well written article titled .... The new young Turks .... at
www.economist.com a `must` read !
-
Brilliant article. Read it.

So So upsetting! things must have to get that bad and still the government won't listen. My heart goes out to all those who make a stand for what they believe in. So far away from the apathy that seems to prevail in this country, where many can't even be bothered to vote! Great song and very strong images.
-
Very powerful, and thought provoking, I'll be out there in 3 weeks, I hope they achieve their goals

Another good article here

Very moving and very sad

I have friends who have been involved in this peaceful demonstration. They have been backed into a corner to defend themselves against unprovoked violence by the police. They say that Turkey is a great country but despite university education, many of them can only look forward to seasonal work in holiday destinations in the country and in some instances they work all season only to be told that the bar/restaurant made NO money and therefore they don't get paid. There are no rules in place to protect them against this. In such a rich country, there is little for people to look forward to. If new measures regarding alcohol and other religious laws are imposed then tourism would be destroyed and instead of moving forward, the country will take a massive backward step. The Turkish flag and Ataturk are everywhere in the country but the present government are destroying all that Ataturk stood for and wanted for his people. Ataturk stated that religion and politics should NEVER mix but that is not the stance of Erdogan.

Here is an article worth reading in the UK Guardian by a Turkish member of parliament (CHP)
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jun/10/turkish-protests-west
And here is a link to all sorts of links that may be of interest - çapulculardan (from the protesters)

And finally this is part of a message I received from a Turkish girlfriend in Istanbul a few days ago which may give you an indication of how significant this all is
"This is BIG Nichola! And no one has ever had this much of hope, resistance, adaptation t how to fight against brutal police violence and the instinct for survival.
It's like we've grown up in two days to become a Hulk, been one and we will not let others divide us. I wish you could be here, you'd love this phase of Istanbul, I'm sure!
I hope the violence stops immediately in other cities. I want to believe that nothing's gonna be the same again..."

For those of you who have a press blackout, riot police clearing Taksim Square as I speak.
-
Who has a press blackout?
-
I thought the press were restricted and showing anything but the demonstrations ie penguins.
-
JR
Messages I have been reading from the capulists ask that people pass on solid information (not rumour) in case that there is media blackout - which RTE is trying to achieve. So I think it is OK that you do so even if often redundant.
The Istanbul Governor announced this morning that Taksim Square would be cleared but that Gezi Parki would be unaffected. Turkish Daily News is now reporting that riot police are clearing Gezi Parki but the Governor is saying this is only to remove banners. Meanwhile the BBC is reporting Erdogan's comment that ""I am sorry but Gezi Park is for taking promenades, not for occupation". Odd that. I thought he had been saying it was for building shopping malls and mosques.

Thanks Kevin -

The reports on exactly how many lawyers have been arrested varies but this video shows lawyers being taken away from a court house. These are lawyers who have defended and supported the protests/ers.
-
Many thanks - it's just awful and so worrying too.
