We have never seen a gulet with a sail (furled or unfurled) and they always seem
to travel under engine power. Why pay for masts to be fitted ????????
-
Very few of the boat owners have the navigational skills to use sails, you also have to take into account the trips are made up of lots of short distant trips from island to island so would be too time consuming to up and down the sails for each trip and would need a big increase in staff to do this, thus cheaper and more convenient to run on engines.

Thank you Captain Trent :)

a) Because there's something in Maritime Law about vessels over a certain length displaying masthead lights at a certain height in darkness.
b) Because it looks right.
Having said that, take a look at the pictures on the Fethiye Yachting website of gulets under full sail.

A gulet (Turkish pronunciation: [ɡuˈlet]) is a traditional design of a two-masted or three-masted wooden sailing vessel (the most common design has two masts) from the southwestern coast of Turkey
if it didn't have masts, it wouldn't be a gulet ;)

Are Gulets ships, or boats ?
-
Boats
A ship can carry a boat but a boat cannot carry a ship :)
-
Why ?
-
The purpose of a boat can be carried out on deck, the purpose of a ship gets carried out below decks
When turning a boat leans into the turn and a ship leans out of the turn
:D

Every day is an education on here. :)

You're very easily pleased then Bewva !

I was on boats. We used to sink ships.

Deliberately ?

Hang on a submarine is a boat, not a lot done on deck there....

Exactly Jim and yes black adder.

May be for when the engine brakes down ?
-
We have done 2 x 7 day trips on gulets and they did raise the sails on occasion
OK it was a bit limited as the boom was secured so the couldn't jibe (just like some of the day boats who sail for a stretch of the trip) but still a nice peaceful leg of a journey
-
They will often put them up on days with no wind. They then motor astern and let guests take photoes from a dingy.

An old Italian navy trick ?

There is an annual gulet race in bodrum, they sail the course and are not allowed to use engines. It is held, I believe in October.
