Hi all,
It is my first time staying in a villa in Calis, Fethiye.
I am stopping for two weeks before deciding whether to buy a villa out there and i am just after a bit of advice and info from either people that have visited or people that live out there.
1. What are the best restaraunts in the area?
2. Were is best place for genuine fake clothing/sunglasses/watches?
3. what is the best supermarket in the area?
4. Are there any Shisha bars and which ones are the best?
5. Do the shops/locals prefere english or local currency?
6. where are the best pubs/clubs to watch english football? as england are on whilst i am away ;)
Would be really greatful if you could answer my questions and would make my time there a lot better.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to CBF
All the answers to your questions are here, take a browse :)
Well apart from the Shisha Bar one maybe, I have no idea what that is :o
-
As "Scunner" has said, all of your questions can very easily be answered by using the "Search" facility. "Shisha" is more commonly known as "Nargile" in this area of Turkey, & most bars will happily supply same for your pleasure. NO "funny" baccy though !! Enjoy your stay, & I hope you decide to stay. ;)

We had a nice Shisha at Guvens last month. Went down well with all the Efes ;)
-
I'm glad the Shisha thing got explained. I was passing a Shisha Bar on Wednesday lunch time in Didsbury and thought about going in to get a kabab for my lunch :D

As you will be in Turkey the currency is Lira, so use that in the shops and restaurants. Use Sterling to buy and you will only get the exchange rate the seller wants to give you.
-
I would advise you to rent before opting to buy. There are lots of properties on the market and some are superb bargains, especially with the high exchange rate we have at the moment but I think you are better off renting and taking your time to decide if buying is for you. Calis is a dream but there is a huge difference living in a place and going to that same place on holiday. Part of your adventure will be finding out for yourself where you like to eat, shop & socialise. As was previously mentioned the Forum has most of the answers to your questions based on people's views and findings but there is nothing better than exploring for yourself. Enjoy the dream. ;)
-
Spot on Ray, that's exactly what I'd recommend. It's easy to get swept away with the dream and rush into things, lovely to take your time and have no pressure. Renting gives time to really research the area
and realise just how much choice there is. You'll have great fun finding all the answers to your questions yourself, though it's helpful to have a few pointers when youre only there for 2 weeks. Ahh . . . nothing like that stunning excitement of exploring for the first time. Enjoy. :)

The O.P. is not saying he/she is moving to Turkey, they are thinking of buying a Villa which could mean just as a Holiday Home. They are staying for a couple of weeks so will probably look at property then.
We came to Fethiye on holiday and bought a Villa in Calis within a couple of days, I am not advising doing this, although we don't regret it at all. We are just the sort of people who make instant decisions.

My advice would be to tell no-one that you are considering buying otherwise you will have more brothers than you can handle and find that everyone (and I mean everyone) will suddenly be a property expert who knows just the right property (ies) for you to look at. You will be hijacked in no time. Search on here for those agents that come recommended and follow their advice.
As regards the best restaurants etc. I would say go experience them for yourself and you can judge for yourself. More often than not we can't agree. Search for things like "Why did you buy?"
Either way, enjoy your stay.

The greatest problem with buying in Turkey is asking the advice of people who have stronger views on what you should buy than you might suspect. The ability to listen to what potential buyers want to buy, then convince them not to and to buy what they want to sell can be extremely powerful and passes almost undetected under the label "advice". Maybe the agent hasn't sold for months (quite possible) and now they have you and you don't want the villa that the builder is paying 10% commission on, you want the resale that the owner is only paying 3% on. Time to change your mind, and quick...
Same can goes for Joe (or Mehmet) Public. It's hard not to listen to a man at a bar who is from your own country but lives where you are looking to buy, and of course many are very knowledgeable and informative. But how many people consider that sometimes, they tell you not to touch that property with a bargepole because of reasons a, b, and c, whereas they don't want you to buy it, perhaps for reason d, that they get a commission for bringing customers from some agents - and you didn't see this villa with those ones. Or because it's like their villa, and their villa is for sale.
So there's some advice to chew over. What it probably means is, by all means listen to advice - but pool it, just because someone told you that the one you like is in a bad area, or is sinking, doesn't necessarily mean it is...

Good advice on property buying from Scunner, Ray1951 and Piscoe, particularly on renting first. Take your time to know the area, it might be you prefer the mountain areas like Ovacik. Or Uzumlu rather than the beach area of Calis... Take your time and look around all areas and indeed property types, and also out of season, which many people actually grow to love more than the busy season.
Plenty of places show the football, locally I like he Kerim near to the water taxi station. Plenty of choice for food, some good, some excellent for both value and quality, rarely is it bad or poor, so try around.
We love living here, but we did spend over ten years getting to know the area before we moved out, so once again take your time and enjoy the finding out, and finally use the collective experience offered by CBF, both the search and posting facility for single topic questions, it was a big help to us and others.. And there is always a laugh or two along the way.

we bought the first time we came to calis ,but was very dubious about the estate agent when she asked us to pay our deposit for a property we had viewed at the paint shop were she had a bill
left that one behind and then went to 2 other agents one scunner knows and all they wanted was to show us was telemosses, which at the time had flood problems.
we eventually found a good estate agent on our 2nd to last day, who found us a great property and we are still there p/t after 10yrs
good luck
