Title: Footpath/cycle lane from Fethiye to Calis
Post by: DonM on August 24, 2013, 12:51:58 PM
When we left in April they had been extending the walkway along the harbour side from Fethiye to Calis, so how far have they got now?

Also I understand there's a cycle lane from Fethiye to Calis as well, how far does that go?

The cycle lane and the walkway now runs from the new small boat harbour (behind the BP garage) into the town centre.

Thanks for that.

Should be a bit safer on the footpath then assuming the bikers use the cycle path.

Long way to go before they get to Calis Beach then.

Do we know how they are going to build the prom near the Kus Cenneti yet?

I'll probably find out when I go and stay at Bambu Aparts in 14 sleeps time .......  ;D

Cycle lane in place but I saw a quad bike using this recently. The road along the new front is very busy, and the road is not very wide in many places, for cars parked, a cycle lane, and cars to safely drive along on a two way road. Of course, the proper way to look at using this area were observed and the best decision taken..................Looking at the boy racers going along there, I have my doubts! Many drivers, myself included, turn right at the traffic lights just past the court building and travel along this stretch of road, rather than continuing past Tansas. Not sure this is the best route now!

Cycling on the prom is the norm and has been for years. Not seen any signs banning it when we were there in June. Mopeds are common too.

The cycle lane is ok as long as you are careful. I've had to wave at a couple of drivers who were coming straight at me whilst cycling in it. If it gets worse ill be back on the prom!

The worst thing about the cycle lane is that if your coming out of Fethiye there is inevitably someone parked on it, or quite often a truck making deliveries, so you then have to go around them and straight into oncoming traffic!

I think that's what I'm looking forward to most of all, Don - having our own place to come and go as we please in the cooler months as well. We'll have a great time, thank you. We always do!  :D

Not sure whether to hire any bikes or not now, after reading this. Had visions of me and the husband merrily pedalling the cycle path into Fethiye with the breeze in our hair (sorry MY hair, 'TA' hasn't got any .. )  :-\

Our biking does are well over.  :( :( :( Still got plenty of hair though.  :)  :) We usually walk about 5 miles a day at home.   :)  :)

In Fethiye we usually park near the Shaka and walk into town if its not raining. We stay in Keciler it's less than 5 miles from Fethiye but a million miles apart. One delivery of mail a week to the local mosque.   :)  :) The drive into Fethyie on the moutain road can get a bit exciting at times. ;D ;D

The exchange looks very good as well  :)

My husband & I cycled from Calis to Fethiye & back in June, scariest bit was getting to the start of the bike path, but was fine there after, I have to say once we got to where the prom starts we did cycle along that, mainly because the views are so beautiful & we could keep stopping off for a drink along the way, was a very pleasant few hours spent  :) Enjoy!!

Spot on Bluwise! TA does stand for Tother Arf indeed!
Seems we share a sense of humour too. You and I could be very dangerous if we ever got together ........  8)

If we do the Calis > Fethiye cycle run, I may have to get TA a three wheeler.

You have been able for many years to cycle along from Fethiye to Calis & VV - see You Tube link below
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ULp60CCdWM
Its just getting easier with surfacing of prom being extended.

UPDATE !
Today they have sunk flashing red and blue lights in to the road, illuminating the edge of the cycle lane! They are very bright and I am little concerned that pilots might think it's a runway..
Having just returned from a walk with the dog I am pleased to report we are still sharing the pavement with cyclists. In fact things seemed slightly more chaotic this evening as we all gazed in wonder at the new technology.  ;D :'(  ;)

Hmmmm,

what a dilemma.  The cycle lanes are great if you are in a hurry and want to crack on - but the prom is much better if you are out to enjoy yourself and take in the views.

We have always cycled on the prom (as you will have seen from my videos) - albeit it slowly when there were people about. But I guess this is frowned upon by some possibly due to a few wreckless riders.

I guess this could polarise views somewhat - I would be interested to see some sort of pole on the topic.

there are quite clear no cycling/scooter signs on entrance to the promenade but being Turkey they will never be enforced

Menthol,

to make that last post topical - if you go to 7.58 on the Video Neil B referred to above (its actually my video) you will see this:
