Title: authentic turkish restaurant
Post by: paul and barbara on August 24, 2013, 18:58:30 PM
Sorry if we are posting in wrong topic but had an Efes or three but was wondering where to go for the best authentic Turkish cuisine in the Calis area.  Seem to remember Scunner mentioning one near the hospital but cant find the post .

Thanks for your help

The best place to go is the pasa kebap restaurant in Fethiye. Hop on the water taxi from Calis when in Fethiye follow the one way system round and you will find it on the left,5 min stroll from the water taxi office.Enjoy.. :P :P

The one I may have mentioned near the hospital was probably Alo 24, some excellent Turkish food - but to be honest we haven't been there in a couple of years so hopefully someone else can give an up to date appraisal.

It has gone down hill according to our friends who live there... We had a meal there just before we left and were disappointed...

The best traditional food is always in the lokantas.  Never had a disappointing one in any of them

Yes lokantas are the business, but the problem is that if you are staying in Calis at the main hotels for the first time, lokantas aren't easy to find.

I really didnt like Alo 24 last time we went, shame as it used to be excellent.
All around the Devlet hospital are lots of lokantas they're all nice, and very reasonable prices.
There's a little kebab place opposite Bim near Sultan patisserie that's worth a visit too.

If we stand back and think about this, all the restaurants are in Turkey and all the Chefs are Turkish.  So the food is authentic.  The only reason people ask for authentic Turkish Food is because the holiday makes want British, Italian, Chinese, Indian  type food.. i.e. Full English Breakfasts, Sunday Roasts, Curries, Pizzas and of course Steak.. the one food that is always first to be mentioned when a local restaurant is recommended.
All the local restaurants have Turkish Menus and serve Turkish food, we just have to ask for it.

I would also add that the little cafe next to the Delta where all the taxi drivers eat have really good "Turkish Food" when my son and daughter in law where on their honeymoon last year staying in the Delta. They got hungry and my son went out  late at night to find some food he and my d.i.l. raved about the food they got there which was meat balls and kebaps.  In fact, they kept returning to the place.  I don't recall ever seeing a recommendation for this cafe and don't know it's name, but I always see locals eating there.

We have a long promenade entirely lined with restaurants and they all prefer to sell chicken kiev or pasta - it can't be that it is all down to what people want. It is in my opinion down to a slight misinterpretation of what they think people want.

There's no convincing me that instead of 40 restaurants selling spaghetti bolognese and steak with cheese on top, we couldn't have 39 of them and one highly successful ocakbasi style restaurant, right there on the Turkish coast with their Turkish chefs.

And once someone has broken ranks and done it, and held their nerve long enough to realise they don't have to have every dish on the planet on their menu, maybe even another one could open a Turkish restaurant, making it 2/38.

Crazy I know.

We like Turkish food, rather than Indian, Chinese, Itallian etc when we are in Calis, but we also like to have dinner on the sea front rather than in town surrounded by buildings and traffic.

So, which restaurants serve the most "authentic" Turkish food, in good location such as the sea front ?

For genuine specialty dishes from Hatay, a south eastern province of Turkey, you can't beat The Mozaik Bahçe (Mosaic Garden) restaurant in Fethiye.

So no recommendations for Calis, which was the question  :)

We have had lovey Turkish meals at the restaurants in Calis nothing wrong with them.  It's not compulsory to have rice and chips.  We love the lamb shank had a very nice one in the new Vojo.   However, my all time favourite is Chicken Topkapi at George's whereas Phil's favourite is the liver, he loves it.  All the restaurants along the front serve Turkish Food and we have always found it very good.

Me too! I'd rather have good food on a formica table with a local buzz than fancy table cloths and overhearing Brits moaning about mozzies.

Imo if Calis waits long enough the restaurant owners will catch up /catch on, as have  Olu Deniz, Hisaronu, and Ovacik, over the last 18 months or so. There is a profusion of Turkish restaurants, great real meat kabap establishments, gozleme, small family run places. Most likely because of the big surge in Authentic Turkish holidaymakers. Great Iskender in Olu at the Brit sounding Best Kebap Restaurant.  :) 8)

I was wondering when someone would mention Fethiye's number one restaurant!

I agree with Eric - you can't beat the Mozaik for really good traditional Turkish food.

I also agree that the lokantas offer great local food at really good prices.

All restaurants in Calis Beach are Turkish and all sell authentic Turkish food cooked by Turkish Chefs.  Ask for a Turkish meal.  In fact, if more people ordered Turkish food in Calis Restaurants we might not have this thread. The Restaurant owners will give the British tourists what they want... Usually a big steak dinner.

I've noticed this year a much bigger choice of Turkish food in many of the restaurants, probably because of the increasing numbers of Turkish tourists.

what i s a lokantas?

Lokantas tend to serve around 4 or 5 main dishes, usually things like soups, casseroles, moussaka, chicken and vegetable dishes, and rice and a limited range of deserts.
They sometimes have kebabs too and Pide.
If you order soup or pide it will always come with complimentary salad.
Expect to pay around 5tl for soup, 7 to 10 for pide, depending on toppings, 10 tl for a hot dish with rice.
They mostly have basic wooden tables and chairs, and serve (free) water in jugs with the food.... Look out for sulu yemek.... Food with water, not sure if its from the tap, but have had it often with no ill effects.
Hot drinks usually are Turkish tea,(cay)  coffee and Nescafé. In most cases cay is complimentary after a meal.

The food is home cooked, traditional and usually very tasty.
It's a great opportunity to try deserts that don't tend to be in the mainstream restaurants, such as Kunefe, shredded wheat with cheese and syrup.
There are lots around the Otogar, Devlet hospital and along the Gunlukbasi road.
The one by the big Migros is excellent.
There are a couple in Fethiye near the paspatur which have a bigger choice but are a little more expensive but well worth a visit.

My point was/is that we all agree good quality and authentic Turkish food can be found in lokantas. The question is, will people arriving at the Malhun for their first ever Calis holiday stumble upon the Seckin in Gunlukbasi? Probably not, so they will have a fortnight of chicken kievs, steaks topped with cheese and a load of crap in a clay pot.

Scunner is right, it took us years of visiting Turkey to find Lokantas.  Unless someone tells you about them (e.g. on this forum) and points you in the right direction, you probably won't find them on a first, second or even third visit.

Don't forget Jimmy's Place on Baris Manco either.  Without a doubt the best lentil soup in Calis

a load of crap in a clay pot.. pmsl..   Megri Lokanta on the corner just before going into The Paspatur.. Brilliant but don't over order.. your table soon fills up with loads dishes... They serve mashed potatoes with all their dishes.. mmm lovely.  Our favourite. Sahil by The big Migros... best Adana kepab in the area..
