........that, despite all the warnings about the hard-shoulder of a motorway being an extremely dangerous place to stop, the police still insist on:-
a) Stopping motorists on the hard-shoulder to point-out the low quality of their driving instead of waiting until they can get them off at a junction.
b) Sit on the hard-shoulder acting as a spotter for a colleague further along the road to catch speeding drivers, tax evaders or uninsured drivers who could easily be taken-off at the next available junction.
c) Use unmarked, high-performance, cars to goad drivers into breaking the speed limit and then stopping them on the most dangerous part of the motorway, the hard-shoulder.
I cover a huge amount of miles around the UK, 700 yesterday alone, and see this police stupidity almost everyday.

A fair point well made sir

Yes, I've wondered about that too. We are also advised to let only the professionals deal with tyre problems on the hard shoulder.

And why is it that it's dangerous to drive on the hard shoulder but perfectly fine to do so when they are doing roadworks...

When is a hard-shoulder not a hard-shoulder ? When it becomes the 3rd or 4th lane during periods of congestion I suppose.
