Title: Off to Uni
Post by: jondo on September 16, 2013, 17:56:40 PM
The better half and I drove the youngest of our 4 kids (NOT sorry David A!), Andy, 18y1m, to Liverpool on Saturday to drop him at his abode for the next 3/4 years. Very proud of him, he got the Uni he wanted for a Computer Science degree. But.....it didn't seem fair to leave him there, what a tough parting that was! Emotions still raw as hell! He's been a joy and a shadow to me, and my mate. But, hard though it is he's gotta do what he's gotta do. Still his sister's back with us having finished her 3 year drama/dance/singing course so we're not empty nesters just yet.
Good luck to those of you in the same boat - I know you'll be feeling it too!

HI  Shondo

Share this with you, our son at Liverpool Uni too.  It is his final year and beaware it is fresher week next week, they certainly let their hair down.  It's costing us a fortune and thats just the social life. Lol.  We have got used to him being there now  and he always talks positive of the place.  Sometimes we have a weekend in Liverpool and cramp his style.  Liverpool is an amazing place.  :)

Hi Poppy50. Great, but don't say you've  'got used to him being there now'. How long does it take? Help! We're definitely going up there to cramp his style - remind him who we are! Actually we just want to go to enjoy Liverpool! Thanks for reading my post - I feel your support!

As some one who lives very close to the Cosmo student village here in Liverpool I think your son has an amazing opportunity to be here.  The best of all though seems to be when the parents visit, they all seem to have a great time when visiting, so much so that they tend to visit more than is really necessary. It doesn't seem to take too long before you see the new students out and about doing their shopping, and going about their business.  It is also lovely hearing all the different accents from across the world mixing and making friends with one another.  I'm sure once you see how grown up and mature he has become in a very short time you will be really proud of his independence, plus you will want to visit Liverpool more and more to see what's on offer.  I have to say I think this could be said of any city or town where there is a large influx of students each year, but being a Liverpudlian I am biased.

When I asked my son what was the most important thing he learned at uni he thought for a short while and said, "bearing in mind my still not inconsiderable student loan and the interest charged, the cheap booze I enjoyed on the discounted student nights has proved to be the most expensive beer I am ever likely to buy, I've no idea how long it will be before those pints are paid off!" So feeling sorry for him I treated him to a pint, "go on" I said "enjoy it, this one's paid for".

i know what you are all going through. i dropped my son at edinburgh university last saturday for 5 years hard labour. studying medicine, cant express how proud we are. when i told my mum he had achieved 5 As in his highers and had an unconditional offer from both edinburgh snd st andrews she replied by saying the first thing i should do is have a DNA test done. glad to say he has survived fresher week and the hard work started today.

I cried almost the whole way home after dropping my daughter at Uni.
Thought it might be easier when second child went, but actually it was worse and the house was never a home again.
I went to see Toy Story 3 and ended up sobbing at the bit where the mum goes into her sons room after he's left for college...
I redecorated his bedroom completely within a fortnight of him leaving as I just couldn't bear walking past it every night when I went I bed!

It's lovely going and visiting them though and you soon remember how annoying they can be when they come back for the weekend and totally disrupt your house.
Chin up, it does get easier, it's just so hard letting go :(

I've just given my daughter the best advice I could think of from back in the days when I was at university, " you now have to start drinking Red wine and give up WKD".

What great replies and anecdotes, thank you all. Well, I've supported LFC for 25 years from Watford and have visited Liverpool quite a few times, including the 2 open days we attended at the uni, and so I've always had an affinity of sorts. We can't wait to visit and embarrass him - you know, to make up for him disrupting the house! I'm very happy he chose Liverpool even though he was offered a place at Nottingham - a whole 120 miles nearer! Just don't mention Toy Story 3 anymore!   :( but  ;D

Yes I recall the emotions of departure day :'(, but I also recall return day :D  ;), even though it was nearly ten years after departing for university!!  Gone again since though.

It seems they never fully leave : :) : :) : :)

Had to smile at some these posts.  Having two daughters who have gone through the Uni thing years ago, leaving then coming back, then leaving again for jobs - and coming back again! They are now both happily married to lovely young men and the eldest has given us a gorgeous grandson, now almost 2. Hopefully not coming back again!!  When you get the 'empty nest' the first time it's quite hard and you think things will never be the same again.  Well, they won't, but they can get better.  Make the most of the visits and you'll soon find you're beginning to quite like the peace and quiet when you get back home.   :)

I love it when we all get together again for days/weekends and everyone gets on well together.

But now our youngest daughter will be emigrating to New Zealand in December (few tears as I'm typing this)  :'(  Her husband is a Kiwi so it was always going to be on the cards, so now our get togethers will be few and far between.

But, as long they are all healthy and happy they are going with our blessing and we still consider ourselves lucky to have such a lovely family.

Enjoy the uni days,  it does get better and it'll be over before you know it!    :)

Just need to save up for a visit to NZ now!!    ;)

I'm dreading that conversation, my daughters partner is also a Maori, and every so often the NZ words are spoken, I don't know how I would cope without seeing my 3 granddaughters everyday. It would break my heart. :' ;)

I can fully understand that.  For now it's just the two of them going and I can cope with that.  However, if they decide to have a family when they are living out there that's another matter.  I adore our grandson, (the other daughter's child) he really makes us happy when we see him, and the thought of him being on the other side of the world is unthinkable.  Fortunately, both her and her husband are 'homebirds'.    :)

When our son Jon decided out of the blue to leave home to share a flat in Manchester with his girlfriend Dawn (soon to be our gorgeous daughter in law) he asked his Dad to break the news to me because he knew how upset I would be!! I had always dreaded the moment when this time would come but surprised myself by not crying uncontrollably or having hysterics!!!! I must admit though I hated arriving home from work to a "quiet" house each night - I used to love the noise of his weird music blaring through the house and the hustle and bustle of his friends coming and going day and night!! It did get easier and in many ways we got on better than when he lived at home, probably because I wasn't always 'nagging' him to tidy his bedroom - lol!! George & I now live here in Calis and Jon has moved back into the house he was brought up in (with Dawn) and they are extremely happy - they are getting married in February next year. We miss them so much but we speak regularly on FaceTime which really helps. Even better, 2 weeks today they are coming over for a holiday and we can't wait to see them. Anyone with kids still living at home, please enjoy it while it lasts, you'll be surprised on how much you'll miss them when they fly the nest!! Anyone with kids just leaving home for the first time, I know it can be upsetting but things will get easier, you may well even get to like the peace and quiet!!

Whatever your children decide to do, treasure them.
