At the end of the new walk way towards Calis we now have Duck Island, and the ducks love it.

I tried to post these pics last week but was having problems with the laptop
Jacqui will be so pleased ;D
-
Nice touch, the ducks look happy enough.
-
But they are not so keen with the oranges.
-
So that's what it is! I thought that one of the local fisherman had setup a new home on the newly built island.
-
I went passed there this afternoon, about a dozen gardeners planting trees and shrubs on the mainland in front of it, should be a great wildlife spot :), they just need to clear all the rubbish from the fisherman area by the bird santuary now >:(
-
Jacqui is pleased, looks like it will be really nice when it's finished. Is this up by the Sat?
-
Opposıte the Devlet Hospıtal
-
Thanks Quackers, with a name like that I knew you would have location.
-
What is the reason for it?
-
Perhaps the mayor has paid for it and will claim it on expenses later.
-
When they fınısh that area I expect ıt wıll blend ın and ıt ıs a feature.Lots of work goıng on in that area at the moment.Myabe a park and gardens who knows.
-
I assume it's for the ducks to live on Scunner. ;)
-
Also building something larger about 20 mtrs further out in the bay, and as Tinks said lots of planting going on around the area.

How posh, when I lived there the ducks had to make do with the land.
-
Perhaps that is the total area designated for the once large bird sanctuary which has been systemically destroyed over the last few years. >:(
-
Went down there yesterday, I really cant see how the promenade will pass this point ?

Quite strange, the ducks are domesticated Aylesbury ducks mostly kept for their meat. The ducks in the picture are Mallards which are wild ducks. So, are there Aylesbury ducks in the area or, have they been brought in especially?
-
Did not know which species the white ducks were Jacqui but there were a lot of them in the canal in June and September downstream from the footbridge. They gathered at one of the burns that joins the canal there as a few people were feeding them on a daily basis. There were a few Mallards among them but the white ones outnumbered them.
-
Yes, a lot of domestic Aylesbury ducks do escape if their wings are not clipped and some are just put into rivers by people fed up keeping them. Aylesbury are the ones most often sold for eating. We kept a large variety of ducks including rare breeds, they will live together quite well. We also never clipped their wings, but they all stayed.
If they are fed, it best to feed with wholemeal bread as white bread makes them ill. They also love lettuce.
-
Shows what I know - I thought the white ones were Geese :-[
-
Geese have longer necks and longer legs. The big breed of Ebden geese which are pure white, are getting expensive, even to buy as young ones to bring on, they are £30.00 each. Over £50.00 to buy to eat. We used to have Ebden geese too, but they do not mix well with ducks and will attack them. I would think if a few geese turned up in Calis they would disappear into the pot quite quickly. ;D ;)
-
Anyway, as I was saying, it looks like the promenade will not go any further towards Calis than this point near the Devlet hospital?
-
. ;D

I always thought that, mainly due to the problem of how it could navigate past the Club-e hotel (where even pedestrians had to cut across their gardens to progress towards the front). That's been done now (by simply flattening the end of the bird sanctuary), so my feeling is that it will go all the way to Calis prom, eventually.
-
I think everybody would like the new prom to join up with the Calis prom, the bit I can't get my head around is there by Duck Island. It's obviously been landscaped and planted where the land narrows so the prom won't be coming through there which leaves water on one side and a road the other.
-
They'll bulldoze the land side landscaping in minutes - ask any one from Lissa Park :(
-
Problem yok.
-
not sure where the island is? we fed the ducks every day in August morning and night by the Club E where they have made the new road and walkway . Where is the new 'island' in relation to Erdemler? (keith?) Im still hanging on til the walkway joins up to Calis as im hoping our place will become 'front line'! ;)
-
I thought it's on the main road, past the little shop - where the Erdemler area roads end. But I may be wrong :)
-
It is,and right opposite the turning for the road that runs round the back of the Devlet.
-
ah right so very close then! thanks
-
How very nice! Hopefully the island will attract lots of other species!
-
Well, the second island has now been built, bigger and a bit further out. Starting to look really nice around there with all the planting going on, just not easy to walk into Calis along the front at the mo as very muddy.

That looks okay actually. Although I'm a bit of a fan of the more natural look but hey.
I'm presuming the 2 duck islands are an attempt at some provision for the wildlife from the Kus Cennetti that may or may not be removed as part of these modernisations.
This is not meant to sound as negative as it reads by the way ???
