Actually, it is to do with turkey :D
And a genuine question, thanks!
-
Neither we have Goose for Christmas...
-
Somehow I am not surprised Jacqui. My sister in law is vegetarian, they're having asparagoose.
-
My daughter is a non meat eater. She is not even keen on veggies... So she has fake chicken... does that count too?
-
No, fake meat for vegetarians should be outlawed!
-
Have you every tasted it?? My daughter thinks it's lovely with the gravy and trimmings, but I think he has no taste at all.
-
No and I doubt I ever will :)
If you object to eating bacon, why make vegetables look like bacon? It truly mystifies me.
-
It's not Christmas without a turkey !

I've plumped for large chicken as that was the only other alternative but if I had a choice it would be goose. I am not a fan of turkey
-
Octopus for us this year - nobody really likes it but at least we all get a leg .... and ta for the opportunity to give this old chestnut it's annual airing !

I heard a TV chef talking about this a few days ago. He said "Most people only eat Turkey once a year. And there is a very good reason for that." Have tried goose once - I liked it and so did Daughter #2. Hilary declared she couldn't see what all the fuss was about; it was just like a big duck (I didn't see this as a problem, I love duck). Anyway we haven't had one since - so Lidl is losing out on that trade, pity. Then for a few years we had guinea fowl. Lovely, and a dream to "carve"; just get some kitchen scissors and cut each carcass in half; sorted. But now we have 6 and a half (granddaughter) coming round for Christmas so it is back to turkey. Hilary cooks it in a Jamie Oliver chicken style - slitting the skin and pushing butter with fresh herbs underneath and covering it all with bacon rashers. This means it doesn't dry out which is usually a problem with turkey. I'll be making citrus and thyme stuffing and an apricot and chestnut stuffing to go with it.
A long answer but a clear conclusion. Turkey is better than chicken. And frozen free range is better than fresh factory turkey.
P.S. And, of course, the compulsory pigs in blankets and sprouts.
-
Definately Goose, I mean have you ever heard of anyone coming in 2 hours after Xmas dinner when every one is full up and saying who fancies a goose sandwich. ;) :)
-
We usually end up at someone else's for Christmas dinner and normally end up with goose. Hence the choice of two - we are staying home and want just a 'normal' Christmas dinner whatever that is. Yes I know perhaps goose is possibly the most traditional choice anyway but you'll know what I mean.
-
Tomorrow is our Christmas Dinner No. 1. This one is for Daughter number 2 and her husband who are emigrating to New Zealand next Saturday the 21st. :'(
It's everything supposedly traditional, turkey and stuffing, roast potatoes, potato croquettes, carrots and sprouts (plus broccoli for the non-sprout eaters) and pigs in blankets.
Followed by Christmas pudding, mince pies and Christmas cake and cheese! :)
And no doubt lots of wine to wash it down with and hopefully not too many tears.
None of this BBQ in the garden Christmas they'll get in NZ with Adam's family. ;)

Love my Christmas dinner with Turkey, sprouts, roasters n veg and all the traditions that go with it. First one tonight, office do,but never think to eat it any other time of the year. Goose and Duck, I can,t do.
-
Turkey crown for us, Can't be bothered with the legs etc. no one eats them here.
-
No legs!!! But how are you going to sit at the head of the table and pontificate on things specific and general without a leg to wave about to orchestrate your narrative? You'll look a little silly brandishing a wing. (Mind you, anyone looks silly brandishing a leg as well - especially if your paper hat has fallen over one of their eyes.)

Turkey for us

Turkey, the American import that supplanted the goose is available every day of the week in supermarkets in all forms, breasts, crowns, slices, legs joints...I am not a Turkey lover, but if I cook it, I cook it upside down so all the juices run into the breast and not away from it. That way it makes it juicy and not dry.

Vegetarians should be outlawed! I actually listened to a Fruitarian on the Jeremy Vine Show earlier this week.................what a nutter!!!

Don't even think about it... I'll warn the visa checkpoint at Longforgan to keep an eye open. Anyway, we're having rib of beef and a Wiltshire ham.

Definitely Turkey, though like Bewva I always buy a crown. I soak it 'a la Nigella' in brine overnight or longer. Then for the last couple of years I've cooked it the way Gerry Rae of Simpsons in the Strand cooks it. I have to say it turns out a burnished, proud, juicy beauty! but you have to be brave. ;)

4:31PM GMT 10 Dec 2010 ... So, for advice, I turned to Gerry Rae, Master Cook at Simpsons ...

Back in England we always had turkey and were still eating the darn thing a week later, so now that there is only the 2 of us to please, a nice big chicken will do nicely. Still do the roast tatties, sprouts (I actually love sprouts) roast carrots, shame you can't get parsnips here, unless someone knows different ......
-
You CAN get parsnips occasionaly in the fruit and veg markets. BUT, don't make the mistake I did and buy sugar beet ! ;)
-
Yorkshire puddings :)
Large chicken would be my choice. Turkey is a good low fat alternative though but the legs are rubbish :)
-
I get a 4-5KG turkey for 4or 5 people. I slice up the leftover white meat for sandwiches and salads....then ı debone the brown meat and portion it off in bags, and freeze it for the cat and dog. No waste in our house.
-
Christmas is not the same without Turkey and all the trimmings!

Well I never, not seen any myself. Does sugar beet look like parsnips then?

A Chinese meal in Amsterdam for us this year (Don't do Christmas) BAH HUMBUG !!! :) :) :)
-
Is that the big Chinese just on the edge of the Red Light area and next to the canal? We always go to that one, the food there is lovely.
-
Only have turkey once a year at Christmas, only have a crown, dont do legs etc. Boxing Day its cold turkey, ham, chips and pickles ,may be with a fried egg, always the same, wont ever change, been going on for more than 50 years, its a tradition.
-
Sounds like a good one to me Echogirl. ;)

I've ordered a boned stuffed (sage & onion stuffing) and rolled turkey breast wrapped in bacon from the butcher -as we usually have and is fab…But this year our eldest son has ordered a goose too!
Have to admit to having a bit of a hissy fit about room in the oven etc. But have now found a Jamie Oliver recipe for cooking it the day before with ginger and 5 spices and reheat on the day -looks a bit like crispy duck in the photo… yummy!
