Post by: Hellzbellz on December 30, 2013, 16:40:57 PM
Hoping someone can answer this for me. I am wanting to give my friend £1500 English money to bring over to turkey to pay my rent as I cant get back till at least March. is there a limit on how much she can legally carry through customs

There are no restrictions under 10,000 euros. Anything over that you have to complete a declaration form. This is a fairly old google answer, but I imagine it's probably the same now.

thanks Lotty, I found that but as was so old I wondered whether it may have changed. think she will be fairly safe with my paltry amount  :)

You're welcome Hellzbellz, I once brought twice that amount out in cash when I had to pay for something and there was no problem.  :)

You are far more likely to be challenged at your UK departure point than on arrival in Turkey. But £1,500 is not going to be of great interest.

I brought over £10,000 in cash and I was stopped at departures in UK. I thought "here we go, trouble ahead", instead they got me to empty all my stuff from hand luggage; loads of wires headphones chargers and devices and a brown envelope with the cash in. They just tossed the envelope with the cash in it to one side and then proceeded to go over my MP3 player and headphones with a wand thingy. They were not interested in the money, they just did a thorough check on my electrical stuff because by mistake I had not taken my laptop out of my hand luggage. In fact it was the teller at the bank when I was withdrawing it who was full of questions about what I was going to do with it. I told her anything other than leave it there with their lousy rates of interest.

We have had friends visit this year who were questioned at Gatwick by police about the cash they carried, in both cases it was an amount that many people take especially if they were paying cash for hotels etc, one officer said that they were questioning anyone found with over £1000 - he did suggest that if anyone were to take large cash sums with them that it would be a good idea to take some form of proof of where the money came from, such as a bank receipt.

Off subject slightly, when I brought my cash over, it was in 1k wads wrapped in those bank paper bands with the bank stamp on. We were surprised when they were accepted as payment immediately and not counted! So trusting.   :)
