Title: Rip off Britain Holidays featuring Turkey
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on January 06, 2014, 09:43:24 AM
Saw Angela Rippon on the Breakfast show this morning.  She was advertising the fact that Rip Off Britain Holidays starts again this morning at 11.00am and is on every morning this week.
She told of two items to be featured.  Firstly, a couple on holiday in Turkey had their passports taken by the Hotel and the Hotel lost them.  It cost them £900 in expenses including Thomson's flying them back late to a different airport and their car was at another one.
Second thing, a couple who took an economy flight with hand luggage only, no room for luggage in overhead storage, so they had their luggage put in hold and valuables where stolen.  Insurance companies will not pay out if you allow valuables out of your sight in unlocked luggage. Angela was saying this situation will happen more and more as the Economy Flights don't want you to use the hold, but have not provided anymore space in the airplane.
So, 11.00am this morning.

Just watched it, enough to put you off travelling ever again. I think it's a good point about taking a copy of your passport and only handing over the copy. We recently got back from a look around the Aegean Coast, every hotel we stayed at insisted on taking your passport at check in.

Legally speaking - what right does a hotel have to demand and retain your passport? Be interested to know the answer - if we have a CBF legal bod reading.

I'm no legal bod but my understanding is that the British Passport is property of the state or the Queen or something - and not the property of holder. It cannot be confiscated. Maybe someone might know for sure...

Care of good old Wikipidia

Passports as government property[edit]

Most countries declare by law that passports are government property, and may be limited or revoked at any time, usually on specified grounds. A limitation or a revocation is generally subject to judicial review.

Revoked by the issuing government, not a hotel in Turkey :D

It's quite normal in Turkey for hotels to take passports. Usually it is so they can take a copy and take a note of the details because they get regularly checked by the authorities.

Usually they are returned once this information is recorded or you can ask for them back.

I imagine that they do this so you can go to your room rather than keep you waiting while they do this.

Unforgivable that any hotel would "lose" passports though.

Turkish people almost always have to hand over their identity card and it seems common practice to hold onto these and I am sure I in many cases it to ensure they get paid for the room.

Turns out they weren't lost but given to different guests who took them home with them.

It says a lot about passport control who presumably allowed two people to use the wrong passports?

Sorry it was T.Cook not Thomson's.   Disgraceful behaviour from T.C. and the Hotel, which was the Marcan in Oludeniz, strange because this place always gets good write ups on T.A.

I always wait for them to copy the details and take my passport back wherever I go

Is it just me? How the blue blazes did the other couple manage to get through not one but four points where the passports would have been checked? 1) At Dalaman check in the names on the passports wouldn't have matched the passenger list 2) Passport control at Dalaman 3) Boarding the aircraft, presuming the boarding card names were as the passenger list 4) At passport control in the UK.

Finally, not sure how this story constitutes a "rip off"
