Title: Shaka Restaurant being demolished
Post by: Marggie on January 15, 2014, 18:56:23 PM
We passed Shaka today and were surprised to see it was being demolished.  My husband asked what was happening and was told it was being redesigned.  At the moment they are operating from The Veranda Restaurant next door.

I wonder was it illegally built and was pulled down, like others have been on the prom at Fethiye??  We also love the Shaka and always go for meals there.  I am disappointed, hope it gets rebuilt.  I remember it was just bought by a new owner last year and as someone said it was so modern I cannot see another reason to pull it down.

When we walked past last night the shaka had been gutted but not demolished. We spoke to the owner last week and he stated the place was being refurbished and should be open again in a month or so. We will have to find another restaurant as the Shaka was one of our regular eating places.

We have used the Veranda but find the menu limited and expensive and the seating leaves a lot to be desired.

You won't have to find another restaurant in the interim as the Shaka is operating from the "old" Veranda.  They have their own seating outside, don't know about inside, and it is the Shaka menu they have displayed.

I heard that the new Shaka owners also bought Veranda recently, hence the Shaka menu being offered in veranda whilst refurb takes place at Shaka. Also heard that one side will be a fish restaurant, which would not surprise me as one of the new owners is also owner of Hilmi restaurant in the fish market.

The Shaka menu is not being offered  in the Veranda we went in and checked a few days ago. We will be there this morning and will check again.  :)  :)

We had coffee in the Veranda this morning and the owner stated that the Shaka is being refurbished. When it's completed the Veranda will be refurbished then the Shaka will be a meat restaurant and the Veranda for  fish meals.  :)  :) It is anybody's guess how long the work will take.  :)  :)

It reminds me of a few years back where you could go into a bar and you could ask if they had your choice of tipple. The answer was always yes, then you'd hear the sound of a moped starting up, heading off to a shop to get some :D

It still happens, M's often ordered lamb chops or something and we've have seen the kitchen boy dashing off on his scooter and coming back with them! Doesn't get fresher than that! I think it's great that they help each other out or they just buy as they need it. When we go to Hamsi for a afternoon or sunset drink, we might buy a snack and the guy gets on his bike to buy fresh bread. Love it!  Nowhere else in the world eh? Roll on summer.  :-\

A recent post by ColinT reminded me of a night I had long forgotten, then as soon as he posted about it remembered so well. In the early days of the Bus Stop, it was also the early days of Bella Mammas. The Bus Stop was the place to be for Euro 2004 - but they didn't do food. So you watched the England matches at the Bus Stop, and ordered your pizzas over the fence.

Everyone's a winner   :)

We ordered a chicken kebab in Sultans by Kipa, wondered why it was taking so long then saw a guy on a scooter deliver it from another branch.

I remember asking for a JD & Coke in a hotel in Abu Dhabi and the barman giving me a lecture - saying it was Ramadan and for most of the year they respect visitors and serve alcohol to them, even though they don't drink, and for a short period of the year it would be nice if we could respect them by abstaining during their religious holiday. He then walked off, leaving me sitting there at the bar alone.

I felt stunned and awful. He returned some time later with a tea tray - cup, saucer, teapot, the lot. I took this as his way of letting me know what was acceptable to drink during this Holy time.

The teapot, believe it or not, was full - of Jack Daniels and Coke. I happily sipped it from my china cup!

My son once asked for an ice cream cone.
Waiter looked puzzled and then took off round the corner.
5 minutes later he came back with a large glass.
Inside it was a dollop of ice cream floating on top of cola.

He was applauded for effort.

Just wondering what has happened to the redesign of Shaka? Has it happened yet or is it still in little bits on the prom? I was told at Christmas it was being redesigned in a more traditional Turkish style. Anybody know anything, pictures maybe?

Still being worked on.  Supposed to be finished sometime in April.  Plan is that it will all be called Shaka (Shake and Veranda combined) with fish dishes being the specialty of one side and meat the other, don't know which way round yet but you will be able to order either no matter which side you will be sitting.

We were in there (Veranda side) this evening and there was still work going on at 10.15 pm.

The last info I got was meat on the old Shaka side and fish on the Veranda side.

We leave on the 28th April and I think we will be lucky to have a meal there before leaving. I hope I'm wrong.
