A Little surprised there has not been many comments on here regarding the horrific weather conditions in the UK, floods etc, Somerset in one hell of a mess, the army on alert to help I believe. and there,s me moaning we have had a week of rain, fell sorry for people having to go through this year after year. :(
-
People are being extraordinarily resilient. In one village they can only get out to go to work/school/shops/etc. by riding in a trailer pulled by a giant tractor. They refer to this as "Going to the mainland".
-
Yeah Des, Somerset looks pretty horrendous. No problems here in Greater Manchester. In fact as I type we have a clear blue sky and a mild frost is just on the thaw :) However I think worse is on the way :-[
-
Glorious, crisp sunny (but cold) day here at the m,nt :)
-
Horrendous night last night, gale force winds, rain bucketing down, brighter this morning but very windy, more rain promised for later. Everywhere round here the fields are flooded, and the moat across the road to me must have a couple of feet of water. The only thing to say about the weather is WETWETWET. :(
-
A beautiful day here at the coast in rural Essex. Last night was exciting, but we are always being buffeted being open to the North Sea. The sea stayed where it should be, thanks to the much improved sea defences, we live far enough from rivers for them not to be a problem, mud is knee high, but haho, this is the countryside. I am even thinking of getting the washing line out of hibernation, and brushing off the cobwebs. The sun is out, God is in his heaven and it is a glorious day. ;D
-
Rivers are high in North Yorkshire but no problems.....even saw some lambs in one of the nearby fields this morning. Feeling very fortunate - my heart goes out to those down south.

Yes Ken, we live in Atherton and had blue skies visible from our kitchen window this morning, only problem the view from our front window was "black skies". Its now heaving it down and blowing a gale. Wish we were in Turkey Ken ;D ;D

Rained most of the day here in beautiful Perth, as it has for most days recently. We are grateful, 3 years ago we had snow in a cycle that meant there was snow on the ground for 3 months continuously - every time it looked like thawing, more came to top it up. No snow to speak of at all this winter.

Although the weather here has been raining and windy, it has not been freezing cold, however, my Son In Law was suppose to go offshore a week ago (out to the Oil Rig) there are extremely high winds out in the North Sea. He was put up for a night in an Hotel in Aberdeen to wait, then another night as the weather was too bad out in the North Sea for him to get on the choppy. He came home and after a day went back to stay in an Hotel in Aberdeen waiting to get offshore. He is now back home again. On Monday they are going to take him out by boat, weather permitting. The really important thing is, the guys out on the rig are dying to get back, some have been out for a month. The food started to run out this week and a rescue helicopter had to drop them food off. This is an image of the helicopter dropping emergency rations.

Although, in light of the more serious disasters this may seem trivial, one of the reasons for my house move, was being stuck at the top of a very steep hill in the snow and ice for the last 20 years, some days we were unable to get our cars up the hill. So I moved to a place on the flat, and our first winter here there has not even been a frost, let alone any snow. So Sods Law strikes again!!
-
It's been thrashing it down here again for most of the day after a heavy frost last night.
The Dee's about to burst it's banks again and it doesn't look as though there's going to be any racing at Bangor-On-Dee on Friday the 7th.
If anyone wonders why North Wales is so lush and green, it's mould caused by the constant damp.
-
After the government send 2 army captains for a photo shot then going home as there was nothing that could be done at this late stage (prevention is another issue) why didn't they send in the navy!
Seriously I noticed that sky news were showing surfers riding the bore (one of the highest in Europe) so looks like the press will go home now and leave the people affected to sort the mess.

Trains to the South West are now stopping at Bristol. Our local river, the Frome, has been very effectively taking the water away, unlike the Parrot and the Tone. But it is chucking it down again and from my bedroom window I can see the river is nearly up to the top of banks and moving at great speed so I suspect it may flood later. Fortunately we are 25ft above the flood plain.

Just been to the local pub for lunch, and had great difficulty walking along. Never known such strong winds, and after a brief respite its now started to rain again!!. Those poor people in Somerset must feel terrible, just checked the forecast and there is no sign of a let up in these dreadful conditions for the next few weeks, though snow is promised for Scotland!! If its true we get what we deserve, we must have been very bad to get this weather!!
-
Lovely sunny day today. It was 10 degrees I was in the local Garden Centre and it was packed.
-
ok Jacqui don't rub it in :D
-
I will try not to...Everyone assumes it's freezing in Scotland, but we, on the East Coast get dryer weather than the West Coast and touch wood, have had a mild winter, temperature wise this year.
-
Very strangely, and call me a cynic, but all those poor sods in Somerset have been largely left to get on with it, now the Thames is starting to go in the posh places, i.e Windsor etc, all hell breaks out!!
-
Cynic nor not angela I think you're spot on. Always the case unfortunately >:(
-
Angela we were saying the very same thing this morning. No one cared until it got to the Thames and then the Army and Navy have arrived in force. Just mention the Queen's land and Windsor Castle and all the stops come out.
-
I agree with you Angela, now that the Thames is flooding it's an Emergency.!!
Reading today that the dredging works in Somerset would have cost £ 1.7 million.
But instead the Environment Agency spent £ 2.4 million on improving it's image.
14 of it's executives earn over £ 100,000 a year, some part time.
I know where i'd start dredging. >:(

Just a brief update on my local area, 3 months ago we has an area where we could walk our dogs, let them free for a run, today there are a number of seagulls plus 3 swans swimming on the field!! Makes me wonder where or when will it ever end, and at the moment I am not one of the many people whose lives have been totally devastated by this freak weather. The forecast is for yet more rain, no respite for any of us, but I have to say I feel deeply for the people whose lives have been so deeply affected.
-
How stupid and inconsiderate can people be? I have just heard a guy who lives in one of the flood areas talking on the rsdio. He was complaining that his road was suffering from "flood tourists" - people out sight-seeing, driving 4x4 vehicles far too fast down flooded roads, creating huge bow waves that swamp over thresholds and into residents' houses making things worse than they were before. Bloody ridiculous.
-
I've heard several reports of the same thing today. Villagers, in the absence of help
from the authorities, have set up road blocks in their communities to stop "flood tourists"
adding more chaos to their already chaotic lives and to deter looters. There were several
reports of people stealing sandbags.! Some sick sods about.
-
After the overnight storm, the sun has been out in somerset today! It's a catch 22 situation living a mile from a flood barricade built by the Environment Agency to protect 1000+ houses but stops the somerset levels from lowering their water levels. The long term policy of not clearing drains (not sewerage but water routes from low lying farmland to rivers) has caused water to accumulate on low lying areas. Anyway, the Dutch are here with their pipes and powerful pumps to sort it out!
-
Does that mean some good things come out of Denmark? They could do with some good publicity after the giraffe fiasco!!
-
The Dutch are from holland lol
-
Didn't mean to laugh, no laughing matter really, but echo girl so funny!! ;D
-
I heard on the news tonight that Looters are now are problem in the flood areas. I think the Government should say all looters should be shot..... I for one think it's a disgraceful and disgusting crime. What could be more low than to steal from these poor unfortunate people who have had to move out of their homes.
-
That's the idea Jacqui, don't shoot the giraffe, shoot the looters.!! :)
-
A slip of the "blonde" head, but glad to amuse you Angela :) :-[

There has been a red weather warning issued for our area this afternoon.. Something of a rarity... Very scary at the moment..and a months rain in 2 days.... Is this the price we have to pay for having had a good Summer? Having said this.. My heart breaks for those down south..I just cant imagine how devastated they all are...
-
I've just traveled from Worcester back to Brum and it's the worst
weather i've had to drive through in the UK. Strong winds, falling branches
and full speed window wipers couldn't cope. Cars pulling onto the hard
shoulder of the M 5 north. Stay safe.

We've had 1 ft. of rain dumped on us since New Year. High winds blew the felting off my shed and knocked down my fence. In the past we've got used to being attacked by tornados. Today we've had a bloody earthquake. I'm starting to think somebody's got it in for us. I blame the Tories (but then I always do).
-
Yes, just read about the tremor Colwyn. Scarey. My daughter and grandbabies life in paignton, I understand it was felt as far as Exeter too.

Well news from the frozen North. We have had very mild weather this year, temperatures around 6-10 degrees. No snow or ice, no flooding, no sink holes. Very sunny yesterday and today. In fact, have been to the Garden Centre for some bedding plants.
-
How kind of you to mention it JH. I'm sure no-one will suppose you are being smug. Sorry about your antiques going green; did you not clean them properly?
-
Not smug at all. I have already expressed my concern for the poor people who have been flooded out, but as you complained about your weather. I was referring to your recent posting to me in which you said I lived near the Arctic Circle.. I was letting you know that we have good weather in my area and not, as a lot of people from Southern England seem to think that we in Scotland are always up to our necks in snow. Antiques are not the only green thing on this Forum.

Well said Jacqui : :) : :)
