I am totally sickened after reading about this poor giraffe, but was totally horrified when I came to the bit where it's carcass was dissected in front of children! What on earth was that all in aid of?
-
Absolutely barbaric and totally unnecessary. Shame on those Danes.
-
Just read bout this and it is appalling. Apparently other establishments did offer the giraffe a home, and this wasn't taken up.
Animal are for life and should be treated with dignity. Not killed for because EU rules said it wasn't suitable for breeding.
Apparently some lions were recently killed at Longleat because they were thought to be turning to violent.
LIONS. Violent ?
-
Recently here in Belfast some drunken yobs broke into the zoo late at night and threw a Penguin into the lion enclosure
-
What happened in Belfast was terrible, but unlawful. Shocking
What happened in Denmark and the UK was lawful. Probably worse
-
Well at least in Belfast there was a relatively happy ending as the Penguin wasn't eaten- the lions couldn't get the wrapper off!!!!
-
;D
Well, that has stopped us agonising any further
-
Apparently, the giraffe meat was fed to the lions.
-
Yeah, they were 'avin' a giraffe! ;)

A statement from Copenhagen Zoo
We know that many are angry about the euthanization of a giraffe in Copenhagen Zoo today. But we would like to stress, that we do not consider it cruelty to animals to first euthanize a giraffe and then feed it to the lions. Lions are predators and thus they eat meat. In this case the lions were fed a giraffe, which lions also eat in nature. If we hadn’t fed them with the giraffe, they would have had to be fed with the meat of some other animal, which would have been put down instead. This is how it is. Meat comes from animals. In this case we know that the meat comes from an animal, who has led a good life.
-
Zookeepers are made of meat.
-
The giraffe and the lions were not killed primarily for meat, but because they were not deemed suitable for the breeding programmes.
Gingers and silver foxes next.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/feb/09/marius-giraffe-killed-copenhagen-zoo-protests. They have even issued a statement justifying the whole bloody thing, I cannot believe this has been allowed the happen. What an appalling waste of a beautiful animal who didn't deserve to die, be chopped up in public, and fed to the lions. So wrong, just so wrong.
-
As there were other zoos willing to take the giraffe (1 in the UK) why didn't the Copenhagen zoo at least let someone else have an opinion on the poor animals fate. I read the story about the culling of the lions, a whole family of them, its disgusting in view of the fact that there is apparently a viable contraception scheme available. >:(
-
But this animal did not have a good life. It was very young indeed. There is no way we should try and make excuses for this sort of thing. It was in a zoo in a so called modern country and they thought it ok not just to kill it but then pretend to use it as some sort of education for the children. It was disgusting!!!! The zoo management all deserve the boot. Worse thing i v saw in years.
-
There are horrendous photos of this beautiful creature being fed to the lions in todays paper, surrounded by crowds of onlookers. I know it happens all the time in the wild, which is entirely different. If there is any justification at all in this awful business (none that I can see) you would at least think it would be done discreetly and humanely. I don't understand parents allowing their children to see it, it would give me nightmares at my age!
-
I don't understand why it couldn't have been sterilised and left to lead a long happy life at the zoo. After all thats why we go there to see well cared for healthy animals. Such a shame.
-
They said they could not neuter it because it would have been "unhappy"... However, which is best Unhappy or Dead...????
-
Dead of course !

Ive been neutered and Im still happy. Well according to Mrs Tiggsy I am.
-
Good to know that you've got the balls to say so.
-
In a high pitched voice.? :)
-
You've got some neck !
-
That's stretching it a bit.!

Totally wrong on all counts... I am with Hoops man on this that the zoo management should be fired.... I would never ever have let my boys see that poor giraffe being fed to the other animals when they were small children....
-
Nobody forced the parents to make their kids watch.
-
I don't visit zoos. Ever.
Cannot abide to see any animal held captive that should be roaming free in its natural habitat. I always imagine the creatures are yearning for the jungle or forest or wherever and yet don't understand why. Too sad.
-
Totally agree Menthol, I don't like Zoo's either, although it may see that in the near future Zoo's will be the only place to see some animals which man is now busy wiping out.
I also hate to see caged birds, birds don't belong in cages they belong in trees where they can fly free.
