Hi , we are going to be staying on the Calis beach in May and we were wondering where is the nearest big supermarket to get food and drink please . not knowing the place or area we need you help please
:-\
-
depends how big you want, there is a small Azda at the top of the town several other small supermarkets which all carry a good range of stuff, but for very big you will need to go to Gunlukbasi or Fethiye.
-
Hi, Where about are you staying? We can then recommend where to go.

On the Market road there are four Tansas and Migros (which belong to the same company) ask for a store card, they cost 1 lira and show it at the till when you buy, this way you get any members reductions that are in store at the time. Also a Bim which is a bit like Lidl, it's basic and has no alcohol, but is cheap. There is a Kipa at the end of this road near the Hospital. Kipa is Tesco and you will recognise a lot of the products in there. Also, there is a Genpa Supermarket up the Aqua Park Road. Next door is Pizza Place, if you give in your address they will give you a number and a menu. Ring from your apartment and they will deliver to the door.

Market day on Sunday for all your fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, eggs (double yolkers) yoghurt, chicken etc.,
Fresh milk does not last long in Turkey, most people buy the U.H.T.
Have breakfast at the Market, lovely freshly made pancakes, just choose your filling. I like the spinach and cheese. Phil likes the banana and honey..

Don't know about any other members but we have never found a "decent" cheese in Turkey, that is not being rude but omg I tried some once I don't know what it was but I really thought I was going to be sick :( we always take a big packet or a pack of cheese slices with us in our case...
-
Haha I was going to write the same - if cheese is one of your holiday treats then pack some :)
If you pack it in your hand luggage expect to get pulled over at UK security - there's no problem bringing it through but they informed me that on the scanner it looks like a carton of juice.

Depending on your taste of cheeses, you can find some really nice Feta cheese in the shop as you walk in from the front entrance at the fish market in Fethiye, he will let you try them until you find your fav's also his olives are really good. Stilton can be found everywhere and Bim sell some nice cream cheese also sucuk goes very well with the cheese or on a BBQ(Turkish spicy sausage). If we are only talking cheddar then yes bring your own stash. ;)
-
They do sell cheddar cheese in the supermarkets. We actually like the feta type cheese in the market. The guys selling it will always give you samples as some cheese is stronger than others. Also the yoghurt is very good, looks like double cream and they will give you a big tub for a few lira. It's lovely with fruit and a bit of honey for breakfast. Much better that the supermarket yoghurt.

I'm surprised at the comments about cheese. I have had a lot of very good cheese in Turkey. There are a lot of tasty goat and sheep cheeses. I couldn't tell you the names of them though as I shop in weekly markets and taste a range of samples before making my choices.

Had some really tasty Irish Cheddar tonight, purchased from Bulent's Pork Shop, a bit pricey at 40tl per kg but well worth it! 8) :P

Karagedik Mahallesi 1116.Sokak No:31 Calis Plaji, 48300
Can't think where they are though but I'm sure someone will know exactly

Almost along to the Surf Cafe, this map will help: http://www.kayak.co.uk/Fethiye-Hotels-Deska-Legend-Apartments.487539.ksp#map

Another map puts it near the Seketur Hotel not far from the Remer. I read on T.A. from someone who stayed there that one map gives the wrong location.

I'm sure Mark's map is more like the location. Best to walk into Calis and get the essentials at any of the mini markets. Turkish entrepreneurial skill means a very small shop can stock a very large range. Once settled you can visit one of the larger supermarkets but in truth they tend to sell not a lot more in my opinion - just more shelves of it :)
-
Most of the private apartments offer the chance of a starter pack of basics like milk, water etc. Its a good idea to take a pack of tea bags, coffee, some sachets of favourite sauces, salt and pepper etc. and some of the small boxes of cereal, not all supermarkets sell small bottles or packs of essentials, we bought a jar of jam last year and used it once, very wasteful, as no one was in the apartment for a few days. Having said that there are always neighbours to pass on any left overs. Another thing we take is a small bottle of washing up liquid, and a couple of sachets of washing machine detergent, just small things, but very useful when you first arrive, especially as we always arrive at night.

BIG THANKYOU to all of you .we are very grateful to you all , We will put stuff in our cases to tide us over and then next day find our feet . Like you say small shops should carry stuff we want too , having 2 grand kids with us 1 nearly 4 years old and 1, 8 months old ,bearing in mind they are with their mam and dad too, for the first week they are with us then they go home leaving us for the week alone so will be dropping into see Scunner and put our faces to our name , thats if you don't mind us doing so . Also if any of you are out in calis fethiye around 13 th May we would love to meet up , just let us know and thank you once again for your help , it is so nice of you all , cheers joy and gary

pmsl Joy you'll be a long way from the boss in Calis :)

On my old Fethiye street map it looks to be the street that runs to the back of the big Sunset complex. If that's the case there are a few small shops just past Guvens turn off and a quite good little supermarket type shop called Nokta on the main road near the Sevi Hotel.

I might just turn up, it's been known :D
