Thanks for the updated pics... Does anyone know whether the foot bridges will be left/replaced?Reason I ask is the pic with the derelict houses (forgot what it is called little violet or something?)right near there was a metal bridge painted Orange which was my shortcut to Sok and part of my daily"exercise" plan, I am going to be so gutted if I have to go the long way round now :(
-
Thanks for posting Jim. There's a real optical illusion (to me anyway). Best seen in photo 6. The canal is far wider than it was before this project started. But the hotels on the right appear twice as far back from it as they used to be :D
-
When we were standing taking the pix we thought the same. maybe because there is no handrail and the edge now is shear drop rather than the reeded slope that was there.
-
many thanx for your pics.....hope the boats come back soon..!!!.. :o
-
Hi Jim
Hubby and I are arguing like mad about picture no 2 as to the location!!Is this the region of the "newish" concrete bridge when you have walked up from the Pelin, also if it is the bridge that is in the picture which looks like it has yellow railings is that a new bridge that was not there before thanks...
-
Pic 2 is just a close up of pic 1 where you can see the Pelim. The tractor at the right hand side is on the approach to the dolphin roundabout, the handrails are temporary - looks like the old ones had to be removed for access.
-
Thank you for the photos what a difference this will /has made ,
Ii hope they dredge just past the mouth of the canal where it enters the sea, the boat we were on last year almost grounded as there was only 3 ft of water on the twisty bend section due to a huge build up of silt.
if only we could build as fast as the Turks here in uk >:(.

Thanks for the photos and the reminder of how sunny it is there.
-
thanks for the pics. Shame to see yet another bit of nature destroyed. Used to love going by boat to Calis - not sure we will go now!
-
Thanks for the pics Jim.
I'm guessing 9-11 were taken from the top of the new(ish) footbridge?
Ian
-
tnks for the pics :) :)
-
Yes ian the newish one near the Yorek tents.
-
Karennina the orange bridge is down and yes you will have to go the long way round to Sok. Even worse for you is that you cannot walk to Calis down your side of the canal. It's been a pain getting to these places ourselves not only the long way but having to trail through inches of mud and puddles. On saying that I personally think it will look good when it's all finished. Hopefully a few foot bridges will be put in but not holding my breath for that. Noticed a big reduction on mosquitos which even in winter was a big problem at the canal.
-
Makes me sad here's been no consideration for wildlife, they just go barging in and rip it all up.
The work has forced the otters to leave the canal and sadly they have moved along to duck island and eaten the ducks.
Only saw 2 large ducks on the island yesterday :(
-
One bit of good nature news is that we saw one of the pair of Kingfishers in the canal by the Hotel Pelin. It was sitting on a small single tree left after the reeds and all the bank flora had been cleared. Unfortunately, the small tree will not be there much longer as the rock wall work, and concrete moves nearer to the Pelin. So sadly this could be last chance we get to see either of the Kingfishers, I hope I am wrong, but unless they replace some of the reeds, plants or trees on the bank I think it is very unlikely they will be coming back to this area :(
-
Excellent pictures Jim, must confess I am disappointed with the removal of the reed beds and consequent loss of wildlife and natural appearance. On the bright side, at least it will have a significant effect on the breeding ground of the Mozzies. It is now looking from
your pics that the planning or this project is to accommodate more boats berthing on the canal , thus bringing more monied people to settle in the resort. I would be very interested to know how much this project is expected to cost? In closing I must confess it is looking very nice , as long as the pedestrian paths are finished to a good standard at the same time. Given the speed of the project, we will see.
Please keep the pictures flowing, Regards Ivor. :)

Brilliant photos sir. Thank you

Thanks for posting these Jim. Very much appreciated. I arrived in the night on Sunday and was totally disorientated by the huge mounds of earth near my apartments. Good news as told to me yesterday, is that all will be tidied and work completed over the next two months ready for the season. Mmm, we will see. Hope so anyway.
-
Cant wait till the end of May to see the "improvements" for myself. One of the highlights of our holidays has always been the boat trip across to Fethiye, and the amount of wildlife we could see, hope its not all been so modernised that it is not the resort we all love so much.
-
Yes Great picture be interested to see the changes in May
-
Thank you Aitken for the reply... Am gutted about that I loved stopping on the bridge and looking for turtles fish etc, that was also our short cut to the Sunday market...Good re the mozzies but shant hold my breath once the heat of summer arrives complete nightmare last year, I spent many an evening trying to watch a movie but spent most of it jumping up and electrocuting the damn things with my electronic bat (wonderful invention)...Progress has to occur but what a shame for all the wildlife :(
-
I feel the same about the natural environment being ripped up. According to the Land of Lights site, the otters have been forced out into the bay and have eaten most of the ducks on the 2 duck islands ....... ???
-
There are no"escape" slipways in the canal sides. Any non-aquatic type animal (your average dog or cat) having the misfortune to fall into the canal will almost certainly drown from exhaustion unless rescued quickly. :(. I've seen too many dead dogs floating in UK canal ways to know that this is just bound to happen sooner or later, they fall (or are pushed) in but can't get out. It would have been an easy task to build one in every 100 meters or so but perhaps the council didn't consider it a risk worth funding.
-
Took these 2 the other day, doesn't look as if the work is going further than the ski-slope bridge. So hopefully the wild life will all be down that way. Photo 1 looking up the canal and 2 towards the bay.

Thanks, the top photo shows a concrete ledge on the water side of the low wall which may allow any dogs or cats to climb out.
S'going to be a bugger climbing over those black pipes though ;D
-
Despite the lack of expected seasonal rainfall, the canal level looks quite high. Or is that now an optical illusion because of the newly built walls?
-
Menthol - have noticed that all the kanals seem to be running very high over the last few days, probably been rain up on the hills as there has been a fair amount of clouds over them.
-
I'm not in Fethiye at the moment, Jim, currently in the UK until 11th March. I hope I will then be able to judge canal water levels on a daily basis! Can't wait! ;D
-
So it was not done just to annoy a few expats, and holidaymakers, there are going to be a total of 10 new bridges as well.

Where are the new bridges to be built, Mark, are there any plans we can view?
-
I just read that bit in the article buddy so I don't know to be honest.
