Title: Are you Pxxxed off with speaking to foreigners on the phone?
Post by: snowtop on February 22, 2014, 16:35:35 PM

Any time you call an 0800 number (for a credit  card, banking, charter communications, health  and other insurance, computer help desk, etc) and you find that you're talking to a  foreign customer service representative (perhaps in India, Pakistan, Ireland, etc), please consider doing the  following:

After you connect and you  realize that the customer service representative is not from the United Kingdom (you can always ask if  you are not sure about the accent), please, very politely (this is not about trashing  other cultures) say, "I'd like to speak to a  customer service representative in the United Kingdom."

The rep might suggest talking to his/her manager, but, again, politely say, "Thank you, but I'd like to speak to a customer service representative in the United Kingdom ."

YOU WILL BE IMMEDIATELY CONNECTED TO A REP IN THE UK .  That's the rule and the LAW.

It takes less than one minute to have your call re-directed to the United Kingdom . Tonight when I got redirected to a UK rep, I asked again to make sure - and yes, she was from NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE .

Imagine what would happen if every United Kingdom citizen insisted on talking to only UK phone reps from this day on.

Imagine how that would ultimately impact the number of UK jobs that would need to be created ASAP...

If I tell 10 people to consider this and you tell 10 people to consider doing this - see what I mean...it becomes an exercise in viral marketing 101.

Remember - the goal here is to restore jobs back here at home - not to be abrupt or rude to a foreign phone rep. You may even get correct answers, good advice, and solutions to your problem - in real English

It's a hoax here at home in the UK     ;)

From hoax slayer.......

Brief Analysis
There is no law in the UK like the one described in the message. The message is a UK variant of previous false and misleading messages that have circulated in the United States and Canada. While some companies may choose to offer such a service to customers, they are not legally required to do so.

PS how can you tell where a person on the other end of a telephone is.

What you can do is to transfer your services to a company that only has UK call centres.  They are out there for banks, broadband, fixed telephone, mobile, electricity and insurance.  These companies usually make a virtue of this and give it prominent display on its advertising and website.  Unfortutely most people do not give this a priority and are usually only interested in finding out about price, which is why people continue to use all those price comparison sites.  Plus the fact that these websites do not find you the best price, but the one that is paying them the most commission!

The reason the've off-shored these services is financial - to reduce costs. So the equation may be more complex. However I agree reversing it would certainly boost UK jobs.  Some companies are already returning customer service jobs to the Uk. Prices may increase as a result. Personally I'd prefer it.

Not necessarily in the UK unfortunately - EU Regulations and all that

Snowtop - I am sure members would benefit from your experience and would want to know what company (with a UK customer service) you were dealing with.

If we can all avoid the company you had a problem with, it would demonstrate the power of this Forum

I just a cut and pasted an email to me and decided to stick it on the forum.
Doing this kind of thing always brings out some good idea or suggestion in reference to the subject that many of the members, (including me) would not have thought of.

I have had however, had someone of Indian/Pakistani or similar type of accent on the other end of the phone and not been able to understand them and asked for an English speaking person.  All I have had in response is that they were speaking English or someone came with a marginally better accent.
Could have been coming from somewhere like Bradford I suppose.

This happened to me - after around 20 minutes I told the girl that I couldn't understand a word she was saying due to her strange accent. I then asked if she'd transfer me back to the bloke in India.

My Dad thinks anyone he speaks to should all 'come from just down t' road'.

His pet hate, whilst speaking to a call centre, is talking to someone with a Scottish accent. As he puts it, 'They talk so fast and mumble, like someone's trying to nick the haggis they've stuffed in their mouths'.

Not one for racism and stereo-typing, me dear ol' Pa.  : :)

I got connected to a BT rep in India or somewhere similar on Friday. After sending me to the UK I ended up back with her. I told her I was busy at work but she just carried on reading her script. I hung up in the end.

One reason why I've moved to Sky Talk - or I will have when BT sort it out at their end!

I think you need to tell your Dad that like England where their are lots of accents, it's the same in Scotland, each area has a different accent, so, in Edinburgh or Inverness they have beautiful clear accents and as a lot of folk say these places are where you hear the best English spoken, very clear and precise.  As someone who lives in Scotland I would think that looking at the Scottish view, perhaps a Scottish person would say they hate speaking to English people on the phone because they sound like they have a mouth full of jellied eels.  ;D    ;)

I spoke to an American call centre this morning making a strong complaint and demanding a refund.
She said she could not understand me ! (According to the scammers website re this company, it's one of their standard repostes )
Damned colonys.
And me speaking perfect Mancunian.

In terms of accents, it's generally Scottish accents on the telephone or radio phone ins  I have to listen very carefully to .

I have no problem with any Scottish accent, as as said there is not just one Scottish Accent, just like there is no one English accent.  I think that if this thread was speaking about India's Pakistanis or any similar Muslim country and someone said they could not understand them because they had a mouth full of nan bread etc., it would be though of as being racist.  However, people in Scotland, being lovely people would take it in good part, but me being English/Irish and living in Scotland I get a little frayed at the edges. I remember when my daughter went to Uni in England and the English students made fun of her Scottish Accent and she was very upset about it.

I haven't denied for a minute that what my Dad said was racist and unfortunately he seems to dislike pretty much every race.

He was telling me for a while how much he liked Chinese people and then a Chinese lady stood on his toe and didn't apologise.

My Dad makes Prince Philip look like a diplomat.

I think that if this thread was speaking about India's Pakistanis or any similar Muslim country................

What ? You mean as apposed to Pakistan's Pakistanis, Belgium's Pakistanis,  France's Pakistanis etc . Do you even know what a Pakistani is and where they originate from ?

India isn't even a Muslim country. The main religions in India are the Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. It is the birth place for these four major religions. However, Hinduism is the most dominant with over 80% of the population.

Being described as the blonde woman, the big lady, the older woman, the one with the posh/yorkshire/scouse accent doesn't offend me one jot.  I am older, blonder, bigger than most and have a very changeable accent so why should I be annoyed if these words are used to describe me?
I don't consider any of it upsetting -  any more than being told your accent is hard to understand - that surely isn't offensive either?
I have a mirror or two and I've seen my ass -  I've heard my recorded voice  - it's all true  ;D

The problem in the UK is that there are a huge number of busybodies who feel that they have to be offended on your behalf Bluwise and, stupidly, there are people employed by government agencies that have nothing better to do than listen to them.

I know perfectly well India is not a Muslim country, my Father spent many years there and educated me quite well about it.  I meant as you well know Pakistan and other muslim countries.  Or perhaps Asian countries.
That is nit picking and getting away from the basis of my posting, which was..Most people in England think that there is one Scottish Accent and they think it's amusing to say they don't understand it.  It's like saying the whole of England speak with a Newcastle accent, because, obviously, it's an English accent.
