Title: Another Bloody Supermarket
Post by: Rimms on March 06, 2014, 18:43:29 PM
How many supermarkets does one small town like Calis need? Apparently more than we have already ! Now they have started digging up the market gardens on Baris Manco just next to the Uçkun and Ayde markets and the lovely Pilic butchers. For those unsure it's very near to where Aspava and the old Palms restaurant used to be.

This development will surely sound the death knell to those small local businesses that have served the local community so well for many years.

As the mighty Tesco (Kippa) announces that it can't make a profit in stores here, up the road, Azda & Gempa have shut up shop, but Carefoure apparently thinks it will succeed where others fail.

What is it about this place? Our region is overrun with empty domestic property, yet they keep building, we have supermarkets closing down left right and centre yet they keep opening new ones.

I don't get it

Well, look on the bright side. At least they're not building another bar or restaurant.  ;)

Bar, restaurant, apartment, villa, shop, estate agency, gift shop, chemist, water park ??? Maybe just a nice green space? But I guess that's too simple

Eee, I remember when there were 3 small markets. I next to Harem( still there) 1 next to cafe soul ( askin market) and 1 up past the seketur. All sold the same stuff, essentials like  ciggys , Nescafé , toiletries sun cream and local liquors and all changed money ! Simpler times.

Such a shame.  The charm really seems to be being sucked out of the place.  We have only been coming out for 8 years and bought in our first year, but the changes in that time have been enormous! What will happen when all the ground is used up - will they start going up. :(

Has the Gempa in Baris Manco across from the Anna Apart closed down?.  Hope not. We have an apartment across the road.  It  was open in October. So handy, I use it daily when there :(

Could well be another Calis rumour but I was told the empty new building on the opposite side of the road near the bus shelter is going to be a Sok .This will hit the two little markets badly I think and is such a shame.

Atinabay I think the Gempa you are referring to is the one  near the aquapark not Baris Mancho as there has never been a Gempa in this road. The Gempa that closed down is in Gunlukbasi .

Where exactly is this hubblrbubbles?  Is it anywhere near where the Old Palms used to be, if so, it is very bad news indeed.

Yes it's on the corner of the road were  the Palms used to be just near the taxi rank.  A road we use to get to our place and we have used these two little markets for years.  I suppose they will be forced to close now.. Such a shame.  Calis has far too many supermarkets already.

I remember (when all this was fields) when you had Star Supermarket (now the Genpa on Aquapark road) and that was it for 'super'markets. It was great if you wanted cooking oil or flipflops (they had a more or less whole aisle for each) but fairly poor for everything else. Apart from alcohol which was more than fairly poor as they didn't sell it.

Jacqui we must be neighbours.   We also use those two little markets and have done for years.  How sad would it be to see those go, they are so helpful.

Yes, really nice people who open long hours to make a living.   We are down the road and over the bridge.

And we stay close by too.  The gentleman in the Uckun is always trying to teach my husband a little turkish and laughs at his attempts.  A lovely family.  We shop there throughout our stay and would be very sad to see either market go.

It would be a shame if a new super market closes two corner shops but how many new jobs are created compared to the ones lost . Where I am there is seven large chains of markets all with in 400 mtsr of a small shop and he still seems to survive. Corner shops are handy for small one off bits that you can not be bothered to get at a large store where you normally would buy the weeks supply .Calis is changing rapidly in compared to other area's as it is still a new town as such. Fifty years ago it was mostly marsh land and fields so growth and change will continue far into the future. We have to remember that we are looking at this from eye's that have seen all these things in place for years seeing as we came from the UK were proper roads, street lighting, tidy parks ,shopping malls, clean streets, and so on are common place.

Not so very different from the UK as Tesco, Sainsburys go local or Metro, can't remember which.  Just without the shop density of modern urban Turkey, not just Calis or Fethiye.

I'm sorry, I obviously didn't make my original point clear. I'm simply asking why on earth are these supermarket executives taking decisions to start new ventures in an already over saturated area where it is plain to see that the competition has closed because they can't make a profit.

Lots of supermarkets but not much for expats to relish or enjoy, which no doubt suits the 'pork' shop as they can charge a fortune for their food.

Any shops between BMB and the Old people's home yet? Or are they all opening next door to each other in existing areas still.

it is now at ground level and work started, but slowly, to build up to the first and possibly higher levels.

we have new market opened 50 metres from us by the canal in Focha.  Small place but seems to do good business in its first month... Too handy for chocy bars and ice creams!! It is I think the only market north of the upside down bridge canal, until you get to main road via tomato valley.

The pork shops imported goods are always cheaper than any of the supermarkets....
