I understand from twitter that it's been closed down tonight by the government.
Such a sad day for Turkey when the people are censored in this way.
-
You can steal millions of euros, take millions more in bribes from companies, but it is the people who tell the World what you are doing who are punished.
What a screwed up world RTE sees.
-
@aliHaslan: Very sad day for #Turkey. Erdogan regime shuts down Twitter. A big step toward dictatorship.
-
So it would seem. I can't get onto Twitter through my normal account. Will try tomorrow through proxy server. I can't see how he can stop that

Echo's of Hitler to quote Erdogan; "The international community can say this, can say that. I don't care at all. Everyone will see how powerful the Republic of Turkey is," he said

He can and will. Maybe not immediately but the technology is there and the bill gave them permission to utilize it.
I did post about this a few weeks ago but I think it was swallowed up by... (Keith can fill in the gaps).

I just read that he's banning Facebook too. I don't know how true that is or if he can, though I suppose he can.
-
He hasn't closed down CBF yet. He knows when he has an opponent he doesn't want to mess with ;)
-
Are you talking about JH ?
-
It's closed down but works with your VPN
-
I'm outraged and I do not even use Twitter >:(
Keep it up Reg it'll all hasten the day of your fall..
-
These are next !

It was widely reported on line two weeks ago that if re -elected Erdogan was going to close down Facebook and Twitter, he jumped the gun on Twitter. He blames the social networking site for the unrest in Turkey and the scurrilous lies they write about his government. Talk about a dictator, he must be one of the best!!
-
Apparently opponents have said they are going to release some "shocking" videos via twitter on March 25th that will really upset his traditional / conservative voters - clearly a tactic to have the maximum impact on the elections.
-
Apparently its back!
-
Do you think this was some sort of sign to indicate to everyone that shutting down these site in Turkey is possible?
-
Yes - good point - worryingly it is also a "we can do anything we want" statement of intent.
-
Loving the packman flag George
-
Interesting - I seem to remember saying "watch out for Gul - the stalking horse" - will he have the guts and the backing.........,
http://www.todayszaman.com/news-342675-.html
-
I don't think it is back? I still need VPN to access?
-
You're probably right George. Maybe those on FB saying its back are also using their VPN.
According to reports on Turkish news this afternoon the President is saying that it is unacceptable to block social media!
-
Good on him
-
For the many people I know who have never been to Turkey or want to,
thinking it is still quite backward, who i disagreed with......
Well, such negative opinions of a country over the last year seem to be
more to the truth than I would have ever thought.

Not a fan of Twitter, but a government ban indicates Turkey is going the wrong way politically for me.
-
According to the Financial Times RTE's Twitter ban has back-fired. After the ban started at midnight the number of Turkey-based postings went up by 140%. Turkey has the highest Twitter "penetration rate" in the world. This means that, of Turkey's 11 million internet users, over 30% are on Twitter. President Gul's opposition to the Twitter ban announced on Twitter! Nice one Abdullah!

-
Abdullah co signed the law that allowed RTE to carry out this ban.
obviously a man of two hats. And blinkers. :(

What is really hacking me off here is that this little twat is now making my job harder. My task, which I have chosen to accept (not that i have much choice in the matter) is to keep all of our firms social media accounts both visible and accessible within TR. Think I might ask Atlas for a job share...

According to the Financial Times RTE's Twitter ban has back-fired.
Having had time to reflect, a few of us (fellow IT bumblers) are now thinking that this block was never meant to be permanent. In fact, it was a feint and what it's done is for those against the ban to show their hand, from a technological perspective.
Next time it happens, we might see the routing to many out of country DNS servers blocked, same for private VPN etc. All of the data collected during this episode is likely to be used to strengthen any further blocks. They have the technology to make it very difficult for the average user to access sites the government don't want to access.
There will always be ways round the blocks, its just that the simplest and most straightforward ways may become redundant and it'll end up an internet cat and mouse game
If it does happen again and open DNS's and VPN's are blocked, I'll post what I can to enable folks to circumvent any bans. Hopefully, that wont happen.
JF
-
That would be really helpful John as most of us watch our TV feeds with the aid of VPN connections and I know that ISPs can detect when a VPN is being used to access content
-
Next time it happens
Are you expecting this to be on "The Day of Revelations" - 25th March?
-
Who knows Colwyn, its the obvious time for another block - but like everything in Turkey, what you expect to happen, when you expect it to happen and what actually happens are often all different. So no predictions from me there.

Check out Twitter in real time; even in Turkey :)

Glowing great over there :)

Like a beacon :D

Today, for the first time ever in human history, a nation googled "twitter" more than they googled "p0rn".
The fight against the Twitter ban is getting more and more intense since yesterday, as the government tries to block every breach and the people continue to find and share new ways to circumvent the censorship.
Since yesterday, many public DNS servers have been blocked nationwide, as well as the access to several VPN providers and IP addresses used by Twitter's web servers. New and more elaborate tactics are being discovered and shared every minute. So far, the people have managed to stay one step ahead, though it's getting more and more difficult for them to do so.

Anyone's VPN been blocked in Fethiye area? Most are still open as far as I'm aware.
JF
-
Thankfully mines still working fine John.
-
Thanks. That's good to know.
JF
-
Mine is working too John - I'm not a Twitter user though and try to be careful what I post on Facebook too.
-
Twitter ban to be lifted soon! I wonder if it will be before or after the local elections or if it's because the shooting down of a Syrian plane is considered enough of a distraction to what is going on here.

And it's back !
-
No need of a VPN to read these Twitter posts.

Think I may now get around to signing up, just want a really good user name if anyone has any suggestions feel free to share :)

What I don't quite get is...why Twitter and not Facebook? If it is in response to social media being used to attack/undermine the government, far more people use Facebook and banning that has never been mentioned, let alone done.
I think he hates Twitter because Gul likes it.
