My husband wants to know how long a snake can live underwater! He spotted one in our pool yesterday afternoon and trapped it under a net under water. It was still alive this morning!!!
-
Depends on the snake.
-
Do you seriously have to kill it? Get it netted and fling it over the fence...
-
Yes I'll tell him that. Hopefully the thing will be too traumatised by it's experience to want to come back!!
-
Kill it! no option
-
Is this common?
-

I'm sure your neighbours will love you for it.
Get it out of the pool and let it loose somewhere away from houses.
-
Is this common?
Common Beach Forum ? Nah ! ;)
-
The snake has been disposed of by our maintenance man! We have fields at the back of us which is probably where it came from in the first place so I presume it has been returned there -or otherwise disposed of!!
-
I'd say it was common - I've seen snakes in pools there quite often
-
Got a black one happıly lıvıng ın our garden wall and I have seen ıt headıng for the pool for a swım.
-
I think we would have fished it out with the net and let it go in the fields. I believe that snakes were there a long time before we built our Villas, so why kill them?
I remember the first time we saw a crab walking along the bottom of our pool. The Gardener said it was a fresh water crab from the ditches at the back of the houses. We have seen a few since and always fish them out and put them back.
-
Do you mean the human kind Scunner?
-
No I meant the carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes kind, but now you mention it...
-
Got a black one happıly lıvıng ın our garden wall and I have seen ıt headıng for the pool for a swım.
Chances are this is a grass snake they do grow quite large to about 4 - 5 foot in length and are harmless.

Or it could be a Western Whip Snake. There's a black variety of it that's common in Turkey. They'll hiss and become aggressive and will bite if cornered or grabbed but they're not venomous
-
Forget the snake in the pool and watch out for the snakes out and about who will scam you, rip you off and try to swindle you. There are a lot of them out there, trying to scam you for exchange etc. Keep your wits about you.
-
I had a fairly frantic phonecall from Mrs Scunner one afternoon after an incident with a black snake in our garden. The school bus had just dropped the kids off and as they walked in through the gate the driver (who had never once spoken a word of English in 2 years) started shouting, "Black snake!! 2 Metres!! Get in House!!" - well the dog went for the snake, the snake went for the dog, and the dog ran inside.
I went round with a Turkish friend who is absolutely petrified of snakes and we nervously checked the garden, under this and that. Then a carrier bag, it seemed to have something coiled up inside. I got a stick (no way I was opening the bag by hand) and as my friend stood behind me and some distance back, I managed to get the bag on the stick and turn it upside down. We all looked nervously as out slid...no word of a lie...
A bicycle tyre inner tube!!!
Boy did we run backwards at some rate :D
Never ever saw the snake though :)
-
My other half arrived here yesterday. He goes out for a smoke on the terrace and is confronted for the first time by our scorpion. We've called him Scunner. For the alliteration of course.
-
Heh- heh! How long are you out there Menthol?
-
Not for much longer if she doesn't change the name of that scorpion
-
I really didn't know there were do many snakes, I'm petrified of them
-
I found this one dead at the end of our street

It's all a tad drier these days but you'd regularly see black snakes basking around the small streams that run parallel to the sokaks in Calis.
-
And from CBF 2008
(http://www.calisvilla.co.uk/suesnake2.jpg)
-
That's me scared every time I go then, I really should get over it, I don't know why they bother me so much
-
They do tend to scurry off as quickly as possible when you see them - I don't recall anyone ever having an injury or incident with a snake in the area. Most are harmless anyway. When provoked (like when dogs have a go) they can stick up for themselves, so just ignore them.
-
Your chances of seeing one when you're out there for a holiday are pretty slim.
-
So, all this talk of harmless snakes, are there any that we should be aware of that are dangerous? If so what do they look like please? I'm petrified of snakes, it's my biggest phobia
-
Also be careful of tortoıses. They carry salmonella ın theır faeces. Wash your hands ıf you pıck them up.

There are 45 species of snake known to inhabit Turkey. 11 are venomous. The most dangerous is probably the Ottoman Viper.

You've probably got more chance of winning the lottery than you have of coming face-to-face with an Ottoman Viper.
-
Thanks KKOB, I feel much better now :-(
-
Snakes don't bother me its the
Scunner's oops scorpions that I don't fancy stumbling on.
-
Our Scunner is so big now, bewva, you can HEAR him scuttle across the terrace.
-
Most people can hear our Keith scuttle across the terrace. especially after a night on the Efes. ;) :)
-
Thatnk you, some sensible replies and advice
-
It's the little jumping spiders that I dislike. They seem to face you up with attitude. There are always lots in our garden and in the house. They give a sore bite
I do like the little lizards, unfortunately, so does our local cat who, when we are over leaves us little presents of dead lizards outside the door.
We also had a huge centipede crawling up the settee one night, it was horrible. but we did not kill it, we put it out in the fields. I believe they are quite harmful.
-
We had one of those enormous centipedes when we were in Karagosler, it went behind a fitted unit never to be seen again. Quite unnerving! Also bitten by one of those spiders while opening up a folding sun chair - so be careful if it's been stored away for a while. Nasty bite.
-
Most horrible thing we saw was a bat moth... Really big thing flying about on our balcony one night.. Not that I hung around to watch it!!!! Its funny how you get used to all sorts of creepy crawlies walking around your home in Turkey after a while.. I would have had screaming ab dabs at one time.. Same with the huge hornets seen around the pools in Summer.. If you don't bother them they don't bother you and it IS their country.
-
What about the bats - we used to get in the pool at dusk and keep still and quiet - they'd swoop down and take a drink on the way through. The kids used to love that :)

I'm still at the screaming ab dabs stage and probably always will be. My best-est friend in the world when on hols, is my can of cucaracha spray!!

What you probably saw was an Oleander Hawk Moth.

I lived in Kayakoyu full time for over 6 years and I've only ever seen one snake, I wouldn't worry yourself silly if you're frightened of them.
-
My apologies to Sue on behalf of my husband. We met Sue at Calis market today and he says he's sorry for scaring you even more and talking about man eating snakes.
-
What ever it was I am pleased that I may never see one again
-

Haha, I didn't sleep last night thinking about what Jav was telling me ! He's a delight your husband!
-
I'm not keen on the scorpion even if he is called
Kei Scunner, but I must say I revert to childhood and have a fascination for all things creepy crawly when I am over there. Most of the snakes I've seen have been dead, but we met a massive one warming himself in the sun in Dalyan early one morning.

Jav says he gave you the advice not to scare you but as a survival tip - 'always carry a knife in your back pocket so that you can cut your way out of a snake when it swallows you'. Courtesy of the film, 'Anaconda'.
-
Ha ha with friends like you Menthol ................ love it. ;D ;D ;D ;)
-
I am a snake lover and current owner of five, including 2 boa constrictors, the largest being 8 foot and 48 pounds in weight. I understand many are frightened of them, but believe me, this is no reason to harm them as they are more frightened of us. I lived and walked in California rattlesnake territory purposely looking for snakes and when confronted even those will only shy away unless provoked. I feel totally deprived if I holiday in Turkey and don't see a snake. I look for them, see the water snakes every day and have been lucky enough to see the "big black ones" just darting away as I approach. I have gone out of my way to catch snakes abroad not even knowing their species, and being bitten, very stupid!!!. But most snakes are harmless and it upsets me terribly that people kill them through fear and lack of knowledge. I am proud to say that I have brought many friends and family round to learn to tolerate and even admire snakes. Knowledge is the key. If there are snakes in your area, find out what kind they are and give them respect. Deb
-

Totally fascinated by these small creatures. First time I saw one I thought it was a hummingbird. I remember a few years ago they turned up in our town just outside Manchester, someone phoned the local radio station to report it. We are spoiled for wildlife over in Turkey.
-
Totally agree about the bountiful wildlife!
So far during my time in Turkey I have seen:
turtles
tortoises
wild boar
bats
rabbits
water snakes
numerous birds including an eagle (!) about a week ago (distressingly we also witnessed it being shot)
hawkmoth - thought it was a bat at first!
scorpion
cricket/grasshopper - today in Tuzla, it was about 5 inches long and a very dull dusty colour
numerous other unidentified and very large insects - are the very black, very large bumble bee looking things actually bees? Saw loads yesterday at the beach in Olu.
Still not seen a land snake or a lizard.
Still not seen the Calis kingfishers
Heard that there are foxes, hedgehogs and porcupines in Ovacik but not spotted any as yet
Am dying to spot dolphins and seals on a boat trip
Anything else I need to add to my 'Must look out for' list?
-
The large "black" beetles that buzz are actually fruit beetles. Different types range in colour, most have an irredescent blue or purple underside/wings. They feed on fruits, especially figs. Often called "June Bugs".
-
Yes, Menthol, about that list. We have seen the kingfishers, an otter in Fethiye and by canal several years later. We have seen a hedgehog in at Mutlu hotel grounds, bright green, quite large lizards around Club E, pelicans, numerous herons, bee-eaters from Africa (birds) and all the other "usual" stuff, not yet the dolphins, though. Hopefully all the wildlife, if left to recover from the building work over recent years will get back to it's former glory.
-
What are the bee like things that are often referred two as "two bodied" bees? Are they the ones that you are discussing? Scare people to death first time they see them but are pretty harmless as far as I can see.
-
Ah you mean Gordybugs !
-
I have seen very large black wasps with orange wings which are the same as the "tarantula hawk wasp" we used to have in California. These have very distinct divided bodies. Not to be messed with!
-
Cheers paz I'll stop thinking how harmless they might be :D
-
Sorry, maybe I should say "appear" the same...there are hundreds of varieties of insects out there...Deb
-

They're Hornets, or B52s as we used to call them.
-
Menthol, you've also got a good chance of seeing Chameleons, Storks, Hoopoes, European Rollers, Bee Eaters.
-

The Calis otters! I forgot about them. Not seen any of those either, yet. Seen herons but no pelicans. Going to have to Google the bee eaters to see if I have seen any of them. What are the large magpie looking birds with blue on their wing tips here called?
So the big, fat, black, buzzy things are actually beetles? Wow. Awesome.
-
Menthol, you've also got a good chance of seeing Chameleons, Storks, Hoopoes, European Rollers, Bee Eaters.
I'm familiar of course with what a chameleon and stork look like and would be thrilled to see them. Having Googled the Hoopoe, European Roller and Bee Eater - wow! I'd be ecstatic to see those! Such gorgeous colours!
-

Genius :)
-
I actually think the big, black buzzy things were these as this picture resembles the creatures I saw pretty much perfectly. And they were landing on the wooden structures and disappearing into holes within the wood.
(http://s12.postimg.org/xkdijtbhl/carpenter_bee_resting_on_my_hand.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/xkdijtbhl/)
They were also very slow and cumbersome. Going to create a few screams this season on the front at Olu I think ;D
-
"Magpie type birds with blue wing tips" I think these would possibly be Jays. Deb
-
......however, it could be a Magpie
-
Hmm, it does, I think, look a bit like this
(http://s14.postimg.org/u2yto5rj1/jay.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/u2yto5rj1/)
Which is listed as a jay. My Mum thought they were jays. Going to have a better look tomorrow.

They're Carpenter Bees. Totally harmless.

Yep, they're definitely Jays.
-
They are amazing. Love bees.
-
If you go up into the hills behind Ovacik or down to the Kaya Valley you'll see hundreds of hives. If you need to walk past them, go about 10 yards behind them as the bees are usually well above head height when they're approaching the hives from behind.
It's well worth paying the extra price to buy locally produced honey. You'll really notice the difference when compared to "shop-bought".
-
From last year. I love the wildlife and I'm always snapping away.

davybill, if you read the post properly you'll see the quoted text was written by Lotty. You'll have to ask her.
Now who's the Knob ? ;)
-
If the name fits?
-
Bill "The Knob" Davy. It's got a sort of ring to it. ;)
-
Enough now guys - back on topic or we'll have to lock it.
-
It was about 5" long but very fat and jellyish-ugh! I'm still shuddering!
-
As the actress said to the Bishop.
-
Or a male estimation might be 8". Lol x
-
And not jelly like at all :)
-
Snake in the pool……was it doing the crawl?
-
How about this one then Menthol? I don't know what the name of it is but a Turkish friend said it's harmless and although it appears to have wings, it spends most of the time burrowing underground 8)

My god, Hamlet. That is one very ugly looking creature. And huge!
Not going to show any of this thread to my youngest son. He is 6' 7", with hands like shovels and screams like a 9 year old girl at all insects ........
-
What about this one then? I was going to go out and buy a saddle for it! 8)

Jeez! Looks like it means business ..... ???
-
It's got a face on its bum too! (I see faces) ;)
-
Never spotted that Lotty! Lol ???
