Can anyone tell me where I can get a nice dry wine wine in Calis? ie.. pino ,chardanay as I have tried some of the wine in some of the bars and resturants and to be honest they are not that great. ;). And while on the subject does anyone know what the champagne is like?? Mr Bigfoot will be paying for that lol :-*

Try asking for Angora white, which is a tl or 2 more than the bog standard house white; that's often Kavak
-
Cheers thanks for that Liz will give it a try xx ;)

Not sure if they sell it bars but Idol is a chardonnay and really pretty good...the red and rose are lovely too.
-
The wine in the big Kipa is good we have tried a few bottles there and we found it the best.
However, if you go to Kayakoy and visit the Levissi Garden they have a huge wine cellar and they let you have a wine tasting, so you might find one you like.
The Champagne is Turkish and not good. We brought Champagne at the Duty for when my son got married so we could use it for the toast. Even the people at the wedding venue confirmed that the Turkish Champagne is bad.

Have,nt seen it in the bars Janmack, but yes idol is very good, I get mine from the summer rose mini market opposite café pazarr, 14 lira, after Angorra my 2nd choice. :)

Try Buzbag Emir-Narince on sale at all? the supermarkets

Although fairly well known for it's poorness on here, there are some very decent Turkish wines. The problem is you have to pay to find out. A bottle of wine in a restaurant in the UK could start at £15 a bottle - and if you were prepared to pay around 50 lira you could get a nice bottle.
But after years of experience (hic) we're with liz 101 - we stick with Angora and it's fine for the price.

Villa Doluca and Kavaklidere Cankaya are very drinkable and can be bought at most supermarkets.
-
The grapes for Idol wines are grown and produced in an area close to izmir. I was impressed by their vineyards and production facilities when I visited them a few years ago.
-
Idol is pretty good. I think I paid around 11ytl last summer.
-
Worth shopping around for Idol (all varieties) as the price can vary considerably. For example local shop 14 lira, Kipa 21.50.

Interesting, Philrose. I have noticed on several occasions that the wine in the large supermarkets seemed quite pricey in comparison to some of the smaller shops and the wine shop on the main drag in Calis. In my ignorance, I thought perhaps they stocked superior wines, but obviously not. One to watch out for. :o
-
Yes - I got it at a local shop! Great value and the red was very good.
-
Sultanay white and rose very good cost a bit more . ;D
-
I agree,
Angora is one of the best, along with maybe Majestic.

I pay locally for Idol 12.5tl, but don't buy it in Kipa...it's usually 20.5tl. Angora as mentioned is very reliable and a decent tipple and currently 15tl.

The twins shop in the Main Street usually has good offers on wine, but they don't have a big selection. We have had some good bargains in that shop.

Its curious... they've been producing wine in Turkey for thousands of years yet the vast majority, when compared to both old and new world wines commonly available outside of Turkey, are pretty poor quality (and that's me being generous).
I've tasted some seriously good Turkish reds although never outside of Istanbul and, to honest, never when I've been paying the bill as they don't come cheap. I used to look for some of them in Fethiye but never seen much other than the usual suspects, fairly basic blends such as Kavak, Doluca etc. I know Migros used to sell some expensive (but not necessarily good) wines but never fancies playing şarap rulet with a hundred plus lira.
I suppose the bottom line is that Turkey is not a country of wine consumers.

I'll be searching out Idol or Angora in a couple of weeks time. I don't tend to drink too much wine in Turkey as it's not brilliant for the price. I save myself for the £1.50 bottles in Portugal every October. I might even splash out and get an excellent one for £2.50 ;)

All wines at Tansas and I presume Migros are reduced by 25% this weekend. :P

We have kavak angora white-cankaya-Ancyra Muscat and sultaniye(semi sweet) wines from Kavaklidere . We also have majestic white wine which is dry. This year we are also serving another brand Kutman and so far we have really good feedback on them . Worth a try
-
What sort of prices are they? we love a nice white wine with our meal, but usually drink beer because we are put off by the price.
-
We sell house wine 25 tl a litre(white-rosie-red) bottle wines prices between 35 to 55 and we also have 4 different fruit flavoured wines which comes in 25cl bottles costs 10 tl
-
Yakut red wine is very nice and is priced on average 45tl to 65tl depending on the restaurant. In the supermarkets it is anything between 25tl and 36tl.When we see the offer of discount in Tansas we stock up.
