Hi everyone. My family and I will be going on our holidays to Calis in August. ( First time and first time in Turkey too ).
We have rented a villa for 2 weeks so I'm after some info on local shops etc please.
I don't want to bring too much stuff over if we can help it but having never been before I was wondering do they have any English brands toiletries ? Also where is the best place to stock up on essentials when we arrive ?. It will be a Sunday as well ,we land very late Saturday night.
As far as I know our villa is located by the canal road ,the map says its approx 986 and 982 sk ? sorry that means nothing to me. But maybe some may know the area ? and the local shops.
My 8 year old is a fussy eater too ,I'm guessing we can get nuggets,pasta ,pizza ? The rest of us will be excited to try Turkish foods though. Though I know the markets do lovely fruit which she will happily eat. What days is the market on please ?
Sorry one more :)... is there any nice play grounds/parks to keep the kids entertained when they are bored of the pool ?

HI & welcome. English brand toiletries: there are some you would recognise, though often quite expensive. Why not stock up at Boots in the airport, after you have gone through security, they should have everything you need there?
There are lots of mini markets & supermarkets to stock up on essentials, most are open until 10-11pm & others are all nighters, so you shouldn't have too many difficulties.
Sk is short for sokak ie street, sorry can't help with the specific street nos., but I'm sure others will know.
Kids menus are widely available, so that shouldn't present a problem. Calis market is on Sunday, so you'll be able to stock up at the begining of your holiday. Fethiye is Tuesday & on Friday has a farmer's type market.
There are lots of small parks around the area, a piece in the local paper reported the mayor opening the 48th recently.
Anything else, just shout & I'm sure someone will have the answer!

986 and 982 sk (Sokak = street) - are the numbers of the roads - we have numbers not street names here.
Çaliş market is open on Sundays where you can stock up on fruit - some one else may be better able to direct you from where you are staying.
There are any number of small shops that open very late if not 24hrs and not always more expensive than the supermarkets - supermarkets in Çaliş include Kipa (part of Tesco not that you would know it) and Tansaş.
You can get processed food like nuggets and pizza here just like in the UK :)
You can but a lot of brand toiletries here in supermarkets and in Fethiye there are shops that sell brand cosmetics too but these will mostly be much more expensive bought here.
Maybe better to bring travel size toiletries of your preferred brands so you can just leave what's left if anything behind this end.

Most restaurants will do half portions for kids off the main menu. Also some places will make things like nuggets and fish fingers from scratch so they are tasty rather than processed stuff.

I think 982 sk runs parallel to Baris Manco (the main road into Calis) which is where you will find several small supermarkets and catch the Dolmus (local bus service) for Fethiye or into Calis centre.
We always stay in villas/apartments and I do bring my toiletries over as I have my favourites and they are not always easy to find. Besides that, I don't want the hassle of looking for them. I bring coffee and tea bags over but everything else we buy locally.
We brought our grand daughters last year (2yrs and 6 yrs) and they had no problems with local food, actually trying and enjoying most of what we were eating. You can buy take-away pizza on Baris Manco from Aydin Pide and it's lovely.
If you can post a map of your villa location I'm sure we can help with directions for the Sunday Market etc.
Anyway don't worry about groceries, there's lots of choice and many, many good restaurants - enjoy!

I have no idea if this map link will work. Our villa is between 986 and 982 sk. I can see the Baris Manco is close by like you said Bluwise ,that's handy for us. Thank you.
Thanks everyone for the tips. I will take our toiletries with us then ,not worried about groceries now I've been reassured :).

The big supermarkets like Kipa (which is Tesco) have all the other brands, of toiletries and these things can be heavy in your suitcase. Toothpaste, Deodorant, Hair Spray etc., Shampoo, Conditioner all available.
Branded make-up is very expensive as is face cream, so best to bring that with you.

Yes very central for a villa - you'll find plenty of little supermarkets and the local toiletries are fine :)

Dont miss the Calis Sunday market. Its an experience just to see without buying.
All food is amazing. The colours and smells are to die for. And you must try apancake ,head for a stall that is busy, the one we go to is always full but either side is often empty. This speaks for itself.
You have trouble buying bacon, ham etc . We take over packs of cut meats as I dont like their turkey meats etc and also a big block of cheddar. Dont bother with bacon as can buy breaky out for about £3 and it makes the villa smell as well.
Bread is lovely ( a local loaf a bit liked our bloomer is 75 karush - about 25p).
The best is the bakery near sunday market square.
Walk down main street towards the mountains and at the roundabout near bike shop turn right. Market is behind Tansas
and Migros supermarkets. About 15mins stroll from where you are but a bus does run on Sundays only. Hope this is helpful

If you walk out to Barış Manço Bulvarı on the cross roads heading towards the sea there are 2 corner shops and a butchers (was there in September ) carry on walking towards the sea you will find the Chinese Breeze takeaway and restaurant plus more shops and restaurants take a left at that roundabout and walk 400mtrs or so and you will find the Sunday Market keep walking past that and you will find a few different supermarkets chemists and the hospital
When we go to the market we always end up in one of the cafes their and then get a taxi home :)

Thanks to everyone who has has posted for me ,brilliant tips and very helpful. The directions too will help us so much. Especially as we will need to find the market on our first day there. Roll on August I can't wait to go :)
I am looking forward to the market Saga Louts ,and we love pancakes ,even the fussy younger child will be happy to eat them so that't good to know.

We buy Danish bacon in the Pork shops and it's very good. Lots of people will tell you they bring bacon over, but it is against the law to import meats into Turkey, so it's a chance you take. We see no point when it's available locally.

The only advice I would add is - don't be tempted to buy lots and lots of fruit from the market. It is lovely and so very tempting to buy loads - but it does over-ripen very quickly - even in the fridge. It's probably because it doesn't have loads of chemicals sprayed on it to make it last longer (as in the UK). It does taste much nicer though.
Shops do sell fresh fruit and it's probably more cost effective to buy little, more often, than buy loads and throw out lots of it.
One other thing - try some Pide (Turkish pizza) it's cheap and really lovely.

You can get all herbs ans spices in dried form at most supermarkets. I have discovered that unless I recognise them I can find the enligh name in small print usually on back.
Dont forget you can buy lovely fresh herbs on market but probably not worth it unless you use a lot though I have bought them and dried them myself but wont last as long as processed ones.

Be careful when buying Turkish saffron, it isn't as effective as back home. You only need a few strands of saffron in the UK for your recipes. In Turkey if it asks for a few strands you'll need around 6 carrier bags full.

One other point might be worth mentioning is do not be alarmed if your children get a lot of attention from the waiters etc.. It is quite normal here as they have a genuine love of children and like to make a fuss of them . If you enjoy your holiday so much ( and I hope you do ) they will remember you next year !!!

The waiters and shop keepers are so welcoming and they love children so much and really do make a fuss of them.
My Granddaughter has a wonderful time with all the attention she gets and it's so nice to see waiters who she gets to know kissing her and knowing how innocent and well meaning it all is.

There's a small aqua park not far from Dolphin roundabout towards Fethiye, and don't forget you can do a boat trip, my children always loved a boat trip. Good day out and not expensive, I've not done one yet this year but they are usually about £12 including lunch, less for kiddies.
