From another CBF topic where Rimms said in his opinion Turkish bread was the best in the World - I wondered what Turkish things, or things about Turkey, do you think are the best in the World.
As a starter, as I think I have many, I believe Turkish mayonnaise is without the best mayonnaise in a bottle (yes I am sure it can be made fresh and that would be great but off the shelf) - I'm sure it is far from slimline or healthy but my vote goes to the remarkable
Turkish mayonnaise :D

Ice creams. Considering the supermarkets consist mainly of aisles and aisles of natural yogurt and turnip juice the choice of Ice cream over here is excellent.
And BIM caramel ice cream is to die for.
Spotted 2 new ones this week on my list to try, Magnum ganache and chilli, and a white chocolate with caramel filling one in the 75 kurus Algida range.
Also, kadayif, baklava, and Kunefe are wonderful.
And after being here 3 years I've just discovered Katmer... It's a bit like a pancake and filled with Tahin and sugar is amazing.
One of the market pancake stalls does, try it!
So my vote is
Ice cream and anything with a million calories per slice.

I too love the ice cream, also the honey, and the butter, it's so hard to diet here in Turkey !
Oh, and the double yolked eggs I get from the market, and... why do the strawberries here taste so...well...strawberryish? It would be nice to be able to get some Cornish clotted cream to go on them though, lol.

Possibly they have not been (Nuked) Irradiated to preserve them for longer on the shelfs

Have you tried Kaymak ? It's a clotted cream sold in supermarkets.

Bim Kaymak is the best.

Kaymak which can be bought in any supermarket but cheapest in Bim or A101 is Turkish clotted cream. No vile UHT totally fresh and yummy.
Seasonal fruit will always taste better and the strawberries here are not forced to grow out of season although the early strawberries are not as sweet as they are at the moment. I freeze strawberries so I have some throughout the year. They are excellent for the skin.
At the moment my daily seasonal fruit juice is strawberries, honey melon and the juice of one squeezing orange, home produced honey with a few walnuts and hazelnuts and a teaspoon of coconut oil. Delicious.

I have difficulty eating abroad as the heat and size of portions make my stomach clam up. This is so frustrating as the food and spices in Turkey are always so good.
However for some reason I never struggle in the morning and would agree the bread must be the best I have tasted. Also the eggs taste so different and Eggy!! So for me it would have to be the Turkish breakfast.
The advantage to this is, I usually lose weight on holiday..5 pound in ten days!!!

Me too Heather - and I loved the fact that you could buy double yolkers there easily too. It must be the eggyness of the eggs that cause my various attempts at Menemen to fall short.

And cucumber - I remember on visits to the UK when we lived in Turkey, having meals served with salad and the cucumber tasted of absolutely nothing. A bit like the tomatoes. It took months for me to like UK cucumber again when we moved back.
-
"ORANGES". They are so cheap on the market. I buy about 20 and squeeze 2 or 3 every morning into a glass, chill in freezer for 10 mins and drink. "Delicious"
-
Tomatoes, are really tasty here. In the UK they taste of nothing really !
-
Any cooked vegetable dish, particularly Fasuliya or iman bay aldi. There are some sensational others cooked and proferred by our neighbours . No idea what's in them but wow.
Also agree about the cucumber. Our third visit to Turkey saw us eating bowls of chopped cucumber along with Efes as an alternative to nuts. We presumed the bar could not afford nuts but now love cucumber.
-
Just goes to show how lucky we are in the uk to have all these intense farming methods and lovely chemicals - tasteless rubbish
-
Mosaik bachesi humus. .nobody does it better..

As regards Tomatoes - Cucumber - Lettuce etc - I was involved in Fruit & Veg in the UK for 25 years.
I took a group of buyers from all the major hotel and pub chains to Holland to see the Dutch Produce being grown and auctioned and we also went to a research lab. The scientist at the lab showed us how they could increase shelf life of things like berries by irradiating them and giving us "a whole 4 weeks additional shelf life" - he then showed us an Iceberg Lettuce which had a very tiny black spot on it and said "we are currently cloning lettuce by emulsifying them and we will be able to reproduce 1,000,000 lettuce and "zay vill all av the little black spot" - he was clearly very proud of this - but when the buyer from Harvester said "what about the taste?" - he said "ah ve are trying to make the taste better but it is difficult"
Sums it all up really and at the time Holland was the garden of Europe.

However, they would know the pesticide MRL levels.
-
That reminds me - Jerry boat courgette - I wouldn't thank you for such a veg, until trying this. Sensational.
-
In regard to crops and what is sprayed on them. In tank storage, I have many years of experience for tank coatings. Petrochemical, pharmaceutical, 98% hydrochloric acid we can do. The chemicals they spray on crops, forget it.
-
The barbar, my husband has just had his hair cut and the attention to detail and pampering is far better than in the UK :-)
-
Nichola - home produced honey? Do you have your own hives then?
-
Here goes the list from Mrs Tickets and me.
Shaves (me only!!)
Cherries
Pida (over pizza)
Ice Cream - in its various varieties
Calis Sunsets
Corba - spicey lentil especially
Hand cut chips
Private Boat trips
Chicken Casseroles
Wallies
Yarim - meat or chicken
That'll do for now....
-
Chicken - don't know what I have been eating in the UK but it doesn't taste like chicken (Gill just about to dish some out now) - and even the BIM chicken tastes good here and goes so much further :-)

Go to farm shop on road to bridge of earn . Best eggs in the area. 1.50 for six

Nichola - home produced honey? Do you have your own hives then?
I meant bought from the villagers at the markets as opposed to from the supermarket, but as it happens we used to keep bees in the UK and I am quite well versed in the art of bee keeping and honey production.
-
Me to, I had three hives at the bottom of my garden but lost them all to wasps in a single season. I gave up after that. :-[
-
Oh no that's terrible. I don't like wasps.
We used to have the hives dotted around the countryside after keeping them in the garden turned out to be a bit of a pain when they swarmed or got caught in my hair. It was nice having honey with different flavours depending on their location.
-
Honey by L'Oreal Elnett worth a try then?
-
Black Olives - can't find any in the UK to rival them. However, my local kebab shop owner can import them for me :D
Ayran - delicious
Jerry boat homemade garlic and chilli sauce for his garlic bread :D
-
You can get the black olives in Tesco Russ (I spent ages looking for them, only finding the Greek ones). They are in the Turkish/World foods section, plastic container I think the brand is Durmaz - exactly the ones you crave :)
-
Honey, without a doubt and cherries, oh and bread - hells bells, I love it ALL!
-
Ooh yes cherries and peaches.. I ate my first peach at Patlancig market and the juice ran down my wrists....
-
The dates from the smiley "nut lady" whose stall is next to the toilets on the Tuesday market are absolutely delicious. I have never tasted such moist dates before.
-
Lamb kebab in half bread as you get from the Sunday market. Just simply delicious with a nice glass of orange juice to wash it down.

Thanks Keith, I will be on the lookout next time in Tesco's then :-)
