Hi we had 2 weeks in calis old town , during our stay we picked up sore throat , earache and headaches, we went to chemist they gave us antibiotics , but they didn't work , so came home and after 2 weeks of the ear and throat pain went out GP , he gave us penicillin , once again didn't work , so back on Monday to see Dr .
Our daughter became very unwell , she lost her voice ,headache that wouldn't go away , sweating , glands swollen , so they did blood tests and said that she had contracted a virus that attacked her thyroid , so they gave her beta blockers and now has to go on tablets to see if they can get rid of the virus , if not she will need hospital treatment .
My self it attacked my sinus , pain and pressure in ears , still throat pain , Not as bad as my daughter
but not right either , the reason Im saying all this is , Is there anyone had this whilst been there or living there.
We sated at the deska legend apartments in old town near the odyssey apartments .
The shower in there had not been cleaned and the screen dirty with hair in plug hole and grim , not good and as it passed my mind we could have pick germs up here , But there again still not sure ...
If it was air bound , if anyone as been poorly please let us know , thank you Joy

Hi Sorry to hear you or family have not been well. When we arrived 6 weeks ago, we too were ill. Started with a sore throat, cold and flu like symptoms. Totally had no energy which lasted for about 3 weeks in all. Hubby had vertigo and suffered with his ears for 3 to 4 days. We also had anti-biotics but still had to wait for it to go. We are fine now and looking forward to the next holiday. What ever we picked up it makes you feel really ill. :)
-
These things can be picked up in many ways. Flying is one of the worst offenders as you are stuck with the same air re-circulating and bringing with it, anyone's germs.
One thing I was told by a medical professional was to always run the taps/showers for a few minutes when you arrive as it helps get rid of any nasties in the pipes (legionaires for example). That's one reason why I would never have another jacuzzi as we always had to put Milton in the bath and run it for a few minutes every time we had used it. Pain in the backside but needs doing. I try to stay out of them at hotels as well for the same reason - nasty germs.
I hope you all make a full and speedy recovery.
-
I live in Scotland. I had two weeks annual leave last July. I flew with Easyjet to Jersey for first week. Returned on the Saturday night and started the scratchy throat you get before a cold. I then spent the second week of my holiday lying in bed or on the couch. By the middle of the week it felt like a chest infection, so I trotted off to the doctor. Examined and told my chest was clear but that my tubes were going into spasm. I got over feeling ill but the tightness in my chest did not clear up completely. In August I had the same thing happen and this time I was put on an inhaler. I then had another bout in December and have been on an inhaler since. I still feel tired and still have breathing problems but don't need the inhaler everyday.
I have been tested for respiratory problems by practice nurse and they have ruled out COPD and Asthma. Think the next move is to get sent up to hospital.
I am not alone with this problem in our area as I have come across several people with same symptoms. General opinion is a virus.
-
I know the notion that airline air recycling causing health problems has been labelled an "urban myth" but the number of times I suffer from sore throat and dry cough for several days after flying makes me suspicious. Perhaps the "urban myth" thing is an urban myth spread be airline companies.
-
Me too, almost every time I fly I can guarantee I come down with a bug of some sorts. I always blame the air on the planes circulating everyone's germs around
-
Thank you so much for your replies , this is so interesting ,that you also had similar stuff going .
Our Dr says antibiotics won't work for this virus that attacks your organs and bodies etc .
he says that if you're weak and your immune system is low it will attack wherever it can leaving you poorly
He then says to my daughter it could take 6 to 12 months for this to be clear .
I too thought it could be the flight , then the shower , as the shower looked like it had been stood like that since last year . The complex had only been built last year but stood idle till May .
But interesting thing is the vertigo because that causes ear problems and you poor thing with the chest troubles , hope you get well soon and they sort you out , plus you other guys feel well now , thank you for your notes , much appreciated joy
-
IMHO it does hit the weak spots. I am prone to sinus trouble but this seems to go one step further and it has attacked the whole respiratory system. Sounds like the same thing. I have been told by a lady who does alternative therapy that it is a form of swine flu. But do not quote me on that!!!
I have also spent money on herbal remedies ..no joy.
-
Heather ,that is what a guy in calis said ,swine flu, he had read it in the papers saying people in Turkey not quite sure of the areas , there were breakouts of swine flu .
My daughter is very poorly , she as lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks ,she is slim to start with ,she can't talk and coughing up rubbish , So this isn't very good ........ I just hope she gets well soon
thanks a lot joy
-
my hubby has this virus. we haven't been flying so i think it is a virus going around. hope everyone gets better soon.
-
We both had sore throats, sneezing and runny noses after we returned from Turkey just over a week ago. The plane was extremely hot and people complained about the heat, it was unbearable. The guy next to me sneezed a couple of times without covering his mouth or using a hankie. I remarked at the time we would probably catch a cold.
-
Hi there ,coughs and sneezing on the flight sure does travel , but Carol brown saying they have it and not been on flight , seems to be travelling around from one country to the other , Hope everyone gets well soon and nothing very serious .
-
Not wishing to be a scaremonger but something else to think about when staying in hotel rooms and even aparts and villas is the air con unit.
Most holiday makers aren't used to it and may when it's hot and stuffy have it on all night and this dries the air out and if the unit hasn't had the dust cleaned off the filters can also spread bacteria causing illness and even death as recently happened here in Turkey.
It's easy enough to check, remove and wash the filters in the shower or check and ask the hotel to do it if it's obvious it hasn't been cleaned in a while.
-
Colwyn,
Ask your missus to put her nail varnish on and see how fast the crew come and tell her to stop because it goes round the air system. Maggie did it without thinking once on a flight to Oz and they were on her in seconds saying it could cause breathing problems.
-
Just did ours Nichola. Ten minute job with the Hoover and washing the filter.
-

......... Three times in as many years the same thing happened to us. We board the plane in Glasgow, myself ,wife, and son in good health. Land there and about ten to fifteen hrs later we're all ill and have breathing difficulties. .Lasting about a week. Last October my wife and I were like that for 4 weeks. Holiday ruined bar for the last 5th wk..We started to enjoy the holiday but we came away having done not a fraction of the things we planned. We're not long back from our May trip and thankfully we made up for it.... Too much of a coincidence the 'myth' thing. My bet (in our case) would be the flight.
-
A well travelled journalist friend of mine would always dab a little tea tree oil around his nose and a drop or two on his handkerchief. It would appear to be effective and it works for me. Applied as you prepare to board the aircraft.

I was told this by a friend who had same problem with flights. I think she used the cream.
-
In SEAsia I've seen a few wearing surgical masks on flights. Seems like it might be a good idea!
-
very sorry to hear of your family and particularly your daughter's health problems Joy...
We returned home near end of April and I had been feeling pretty rubbish very similar symptoms to what you have mentioned stomach problems nausea throat problems, it may be coincidence or the flying, my friend returned from the Phillipines about 7 weeks ago and she has had terrible problems with her throat and an awful cough and has been back and forward to the doctors...
I am going to use the tea tree oil when I next fly...
Really hope your daughter starts to feel better soon.
-
we also came back from calis on friday and my wife has been in bed since then. She has very painful stomach pains and going to the toilet all the time.
We ate out every night on our last few days but it is very hard to pinpoint it or even know if its down to poor hygiene.
One thing was though we often saw ice and lemon been put into glasses by someones hand.
-

Nah, ask any surgeon, the idea of the mask is to assist in reducing the Bacteria a Doctor or Nurse breathes out onto the patient not the other way round! Virus particles are so small that the surgical mask is ineffective, hence the SARS spreading like wildfire in Hong Kong despite the fact that almost the entire population took to wearing surgical masks! Our modern lifestyles are so clinical we have stopped developing our immunities as well which doesn't help. Those of us brought up in the 40's and 50's were exposed to so many virus's and bacterial infections that we really didn't think anything much of it but we have an excellent bank of resistance now! I used to panic whenever I heard about a respiratory virus as with severely damaged lungs from birth (only found out in my 50's) I become pneumonic so easily but it is surprising how strong the human body is. I do hope it has disappeared from Calis by the time I get there though!

Sounds similar to symptoms I had years ago when I returned from Crete. Turned out to be salmonella. She needs to go to doctor. If taking Imodium stop as that prevents bacteria passing through. But definitely get to GP
-
That's we thought heather.
Your comment on the Imodium is interesting because I had it when I came back from Majorca and my wife said don't take it,best to let nature take its course.
when I went to the doctors she said I should have taken it.
Mind you doctors get it wrong. ;D
-
My doctor told me not to take it. I had been ill about 6 days by then. Had to hand in a sample for testing and had result and antibiotics in a matter if days.
-
Face masks DO help. If you want evidence here it is:
http://www.healthline.com/health/cold-flu/mask
They are not foolproof but wearing a respirator can help even more.
-
Funny enough Maggie had a dicky tummy on our last day. It's been iffy since we got back. Our last meal was a barbie - cooked by me - and we ate exactly the same food. I was fine.
Maybe she picked it up earlier and it took a while to incubate. She blamed it in nervous tummy before we head for home.
-
Five years ago I came out to fethiye in May having not used apartment 8 months a few days after being back in England I contracted pneumonia and was in hospital for over a week cos they didn't ,know what strain it was turned out to be legionella. Which they told me I caught from hot water storage tanks .so always when you arrive on holiday run shower and disenfect hose
-
Hi to everyone that as have posted notes on here , Seen my daughter today , she is coughing so much and breathless , also pain in throat and ear with headaches . Sweating just like the menopause and us ladies know all about that , but because this virus has attacked the thyroid its making her hormones unsteady too , having 2 kids under 4 ,she is feeling it , Dr trying to get hospital to detect the virus .
I think it was from the shower , I had this feeling just before we used it , god i wished we had run it for 10 minutes , but if the water tank was infected like someone said then we have had no chance
Thank you also for your concerns , will keep you updated .
As for me still walking round , not dropped yet ha ha still earache and tender throat ,headache comes and goes and the worst is ears feeling blocked and whistling , so back to DR tomorrow , hope he gives me something that helps ....... cheers to everyone all the best Joy
-
I came back from Calis in May and within a couple of days had really sore throat and cough, which lasted about 2 weeks.
-
joyandgarry. One of the worst symptoms I had was the sweats. They were as you describe.
I feel like a hypochondriac at the moment..every symptom someone writes ..
."oh I had that too" Honest not making this up!!
I do hope you get to the bottom of it as I would be interested to know. On our July trip to Jersey we stayed in a cottage. So no link there. I still blame the aeroplane.
-
Hi Heather . no your not a hypochondriac , when you're not well you feel bad , Its been 6 weeks since we caught this virus , no shifting it at all .....
So i know where you're coming from , some days ok and others it comes right back .
Maybe these flights have a lot to answer to to ,god knows how as sat there before you as well .
Yes we will keep you informed regarding what the dr says and thank you for your kindness and care ,
all the best Joy
-
Running the taps/shower does help and it's worth doing. The germs tend to be in the pipes so if you run them a few minutes it will help a lot. I guess cleaning the shower head will help too.
-
Don't forget swimming pools if there not maintained correctly you can get some nasty bugs which can ruin your holidays
-
Very true trainer! Similar with the jacuzzis. If they are not looked after then legionella will thrive in that heat.
-
Yes, I always wonder about the mud baths, no one knows exactly what is mixed up with mud. I often think that swimming pools need to be cleaned all the time to prevent germs, but what prevents germs in mud baths. :o ???
-
Abstinence.
-
Well that may be the case, but I would not take a chance the last thing I would want to do is sit in a lot of smelly mud and hope everyone being good.
-
Hi there Jacquie,
so glad we didn't have a mud bath or a turkish bath ,could have been worse hey hands all over you as well ha ha
If we owned a property in Calis we would clean the shower and the aircon and run the water taps / shower , but i can tell you this has learnt us a fine lesson , where ever we go next , Ill take the head off the shower ,run the water , clean the aircon , never too sure hey.......
-
We've done the mud bath without any problems. We just kept our mouths shut! I realise this is difficult for some ladies ;-)
It's a great day out by the way and you can swim in the lake to wash it all off.
-
Lol Stoop we are going to do the mud baths this year best tell the missus to keep quiet I wonder how long it will last
-
So, Stoop how to they clean the mud? Do they clean the mud? What is in the mud? No way for us, no appeal at all. No use keeping your mouth shut when all the rest of your body is covered in the muck. >:( :o
-
Hi, back now after been in touch with dr , they haven't got a clue where this virus comes from ,Now nose and sinus is blocked and painful ..... not happy .
Our daughter is now having tests done in uk york , to see what kind of virus she has come into contact with . I think they don't know ,,,,,,,,,, Drs
I was told to buy sinu smooth , anybody heard of it or as anyone used it before , its for nasal infections ,blocked sinuses ,hay fever etc .
Hope anyone on here now feel better , or have you got a story to tell regarding your stay Turkey ,health wise please .... cheers Joy
-
Jacqui,
I think if the mud baths were a health problem we would all have heard before now!
Don't knock it until you've tried it. It's a great day out and very good value for money.
-
I would compare me sitting in a load of smelly mud that people are doing unspeakable things in as likely as me gong to Primark to buy my next outfit with matching bag and shoes. ;D ;) :o
I also think that if the Mud Baths were a health problem we would never hear about it, just like the way people pile onto Jeep Safaris or Jump off Mountains every year....no health problem there? ;) :(
-
So we don't hear about the jeep safari accidents then? What planet are you on?
And what's with the unspeakable things? Do you actually think people do that in the mud? Try peeing in mud. Not done it but I would imagine it's not that easy to be honest.
As for Primark - that just makes you look a bit of a snob Jacqui - sorry. I know friends who shop there and own real Mulberry handbags not copies from Calis or Fethiye.
-
Anyway - enough of this. I hope those affected make a full recovery and they find out the cause. At least the mud baths aren't implicated ;)
-
Stoop I was joking about Primark, it was a wind-up. However, I do not buy fake bags for myself. I prefer the real thing and for a savvy shopper the sales are great for designer bags. Tell you friends Mulberry have an online sale at the moment.
As for the Jeep Safari's people are always encouraged to book them, even by Thomas Cook. they don't know the dangers.

Hello, I've just noticed this thread, we stayed in Calis 19th - 29th May. The day after we arrived home I had terrible vertigo, never had it before, a day or two later I was really poorly, sweating, shivering, stomach cramps, aching, severe flu symptoms & kept visiting the loo but was not sick. I just drunk fluids for a couple of days as couldn't keep anything in, then gradually ate some toast and crackers. I don't think I have felt that ill since having Asian flu in Thailand over 20 years ago. This eventually turned into what I would call strange head cold, sinus's, ears blocked & irritating cough with temperature. Lasted about one & half weeks of feeling really rough.
We're going back to Calis in August, I was wondering if it was from the flight or air conditioning, (I had the air conditioning blowing directly on me at night), I certainly don't want it back again!
All fine now, looking forward to August ;-)
-
There is a stomach bug called campylocter, which obviously upsets your stomach and can give you flu symptoms etc. My Husband and I caught it a few years back whilst in Fethiye. I think it takes a short while before the bacteria takes hold. My husband started with flu symptoms, then the stomach issue followed. The doctor can diagnose it, but the main thing with this is to maintain hygiene with hand washing and washing clothes at 60 degrees to kill germs.
Apparently, it can be caught from contaminated chicken, water, stroking cats and I believe mushrooms.
We had a chicken kebab in a shop where the guy was using his mobile whilst and touching the food , we did stroke cats owned by restaurants, we had mushrooms from the market and on this occasion we had spring water from the mountains of Uzumlu.
-
I was extremely particular with hygiene, washing everything and spraying antibacterial spray everywhere, no-one else in the family caught it, I did have chicken wrap the afternoon before we left, I only drink bottled water, don't have ice in my drinks not even in the Uk, didn't eat any mushrooms or stroke any cats!
We have been to Turkey several times (even the mud baths!!) and never had a problem, guess I was just unlucky, the vertigo was one of the worst symptoms, I noticed someone else on here mentioned the vertigo too.
Strange thing is I always take a spray on the plane with me containing Eucalyptus, Tea Tree & Lavender essential oils, but last year they took it off me at the airport so I didn't take it this year, but I will be taking it with me this August!
-
And dont pıck up the Tortoıse's they carry germs especıally ın theır faeces and wee. If you do pıck one up wash your hands ımmedıatley.
-
Campylobacter is the most common form of food poisoning in Britain - often caused by contamination in Chicken but not always.
I caught it whilst I was living in Lytham St Anne's and it is really severe food poisoning - if you have it - it is all about dehydration due to severe gastro enteritis.
See: http://www.food.gov.uk/science/microbiology/campylobacterevidenceprogramme/#.U6rO6kKEZoM (http://www.food.gov.uk/science/microbiology/campylobacterevidenceprogramme/#.U6rO6kKEZoM)
What people are describing here is more like a virus.
-
I agree, I definitely think it was a virus not a type of food poisoning, I've had food poisoning and it was nothing like the symptoms I had this time, but I did make sure I drunk plenty of fluids and replacement of electrolytes drinks :)
-
Campylobacter has been on the news here lately. One of the main spreads is by people washing chicken before they cook it. Leaving drops of water all round the kitchen.
-
Very interesting reading this, as we have been home from Calis now for 2 weeks, and i also had problems with my tummy and vertigo symptoms but actually thought nothing of it, just thought it was a bug. I dont usually have problems and have been going to Calis for 10 years, my symptoms lasted for 6 days, the biggest problem was flying home with it, and then not being allowed to go back to work as i work in the NHS so of course the rules are 48 hours clear of any symptoms, so had to have a couple of days of on my return.
I do think may have been a virus of some sorts, but hopefully we have all been healthy enough to recover from it , and no harm done.
We will all be back to Calis.
-
Vertigo could be an ear problem which often is caused by the pressure in the cabin when flying. Betahistine are good tablets which open up the ear passages and can help when flying.
-
It really depends on whose sitting next to you - some caution required.
-
My wife had tests last week after we got back and today she got a letter saying she had tested positive for campylobactor.
It was very severe and we had been in calis a few weeks so it was from there.Trying to second guess were she might have got it is very difficult and sometimes its probably unfair to say it was this restaurant or that because you just dont know where its from.
Did see a waiter put ice in a glass with his fingers and also lemon.could happen anywhere but it makes you a little apprehensive for our visit next month.
-
Personally, I've always found a couple or ten large Turkish gins (cin) every evening works as an excellent prophylactic in respect of tummy bugs.
JF
P.S. If anyone from North America is reading this, it does not mean using alcohol as a condom.
-
With an additional benefit of a touch of quinine in the tonic!
-

I wouldn't be seen dead with a fake Handbag --- or any handbag for that matter :) Well, perhaps at weekends :)

One should be carful at any place that has the "mist" water spraying. This has been a source of many Broncal problems and legionella. ( Sorry about the spelling.) Oh Spell check automatic great.
The water for the mist units has to be cooled Yani, at 10 degrees to work properly. Or heated above 62 to kill the above.
It's based on what we call a "Desert" AC. When there is no humidity then the water evaporates and cools the air by removing the latent heat.
It does not cool with the high humidity(normally) of Fethiye, but feels wet on your skin , so feels cooler.
Tell your Doc if you go back to UK with these problems and have been sitting in regular mist spray areas.
-
Just read on the internet that Turkey still has foot and mouth problems with cattle. There is also an outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (who knows??) In cattle in Southern Turkey and they have vaccinated 80,000 cattle are disinfecting farms and stopping cattle being moved. Just saying as beef is popular with the Brits in Calis.
-
Up date regarding virus in Calis Fethiye etc , Our daughter has been very poorly from the virus , she now has pneumonia , blood inf infection ,immune system so low , and on the highest beta blockers to calm her down and stop the sweating due to thyroid that was attacked from virus , she isn't in a good place at the moment , and as for me still got sinus problems with earache and swollen inside nose and whistling in ear , , ,,,,, Im not sleeping due to worrying over daughter .
They said it was bacterial infection that has caused all this ..........so fingers crossed she gets well
-
That's awful Joyandgary, a nightmare for her and you must be so worried. Please God she gets over this very soon. (And you too) :-\
-
I've always found it strange that whilst travelling around Turkey, you never see herds of cattle or even sheep. I can remember the old lady taking her cattle from place to place around Calis but that's it. My sympathy to the lady whose daughter is ill. I hope she gets better soon.
-
I am so sorry to read of your daughter's continuing health problems. It must be extremely worrying for you. Have they ruled out the MERS virus? If it's not been considered maybe she should be tested for it. Hope to hear news of an improvement soon.
-

Although there are cattle. A lot kept in sheds. A lot of meat is imported from Germany and Poland up to 75% as I read it on the net. It would seem to be better to eat the imported beef at the moment, but no guarantee what you are eating.
JoyandGary, sorry to hear this and best wishes for a quick recovery.. Perhaps worth mentioning to the Doctors about animal disease that seems to be affecting cattle at the moment?
-
Not sure what breed of cattle is being imported. I have never seen "fillet steak" sold in the U.K. which is anything like as large as that offered in Turkey. I was once told by a butcher in Bodrum that it was bison. I also believe that a lot of the "lamb" is goat. Not a problem for me but would like to know what I am eating.
However, this is of no help to those with this dreadful illness, and I do sincerely wish you a speedy and full recovery.
-
Hi the lady that said mers disease , you may be right , told the dr today and ordered her plem to be tested and more blood tests and chest x ray , they say her lungs sound like air pockets in them , sound just like you say , This disease started in the middle east and worked round the globe , including Turkey , not sure till next week, so will keep you informed as if anyone on here feels flu like symptoms , cough , and breathless , go to dr . thank you again for your concern .
The dr that is doing tests is from India so he is aware of this ..........
-
Best Wishes to you all.

Doctors and nurses very rarely wear masks anymore, once they get damp with exhaled moisture they are not worth the paper they are made from.
-
As far as meat goes the butchery ie the way it is cut is totally different to the way that it is done in UK so sometimes you will get fillet that is not like ours it is the Turkish cut
-
I am at this moment on day 10 of a hospital stay.
According to the doctors I picked up some form of bug which got into my lungs and ended up with me having double pneumonia.
It seems I am the second person to be treated at GRI with 'almost' an identical virus although they have been unsuccessful in their efforts to grow it hence the almost.
What I have been told is that there is a bug of sorts throughout the middle east which is causing people all sorts of problems although none as severe as me and the one other person.
-
Hi Anne , hope you get well soon , i can only imagine what you're going through . You must be strong and fight this awful virus just as we tell our daughter ,
The dr says that this virus if he is right started in Saudi Arabia , from a camel , yes i laughed , don't laugh too much Anne , you might start coughing .....
The drs are too very worried regarding this virus , they play their cards close to their chest not to start panicking people .
GET WELL SOON x
-
Very worrying. My thoughts and prayers go with you for a speedy recovery.
