Title: increase in prices
Post by: charlste on June 22, 2014, 09:30:43 AM
We noticed last week that 2 bars/restaurants that we had been frequenting for a few weeks had put their prices up.
Why oh why dont they set their prices at the beginning of the season and stick to it.
it seems to me that once they see more tourists arriving they just see lira notes in their eyes and just put prices up.
The 1 or 2 weekers dont notice it but longer termers or expats living there do.

What prices specifically?  drink, food or both? and what was the increase?

I think i put this in the wrong section.
It was aimed at calis.
It was both food and drink Jacqui

Jacqui.
The increase in some drinks ie shorts went up 3 lira and beer 2 lira.So a round had jumped up 5 lira overnight.
The main course had gone up 4-5 lira overnight.

So, time to name and shame the places.
We found over three weeks the prices in the places we ate were the same.  Usually around 100 lira for two meals and drinks,  Most expensive the Ada, 390 lira  but worth every penny.  Cheapest the Corner Restaurant 44lira for two meals and drinks.    I agree with Heather, meals are great value for money.

One was serkul 1 and the other was kerim on the corner.
A friend of mine said ali's bar had done the same.

We averaged 70 - 90 lira for a meal with drinks. Cheapest was about 18 at Ciftlik Pide and dearest was Brothers I think. Their set menu was 34 lira each if you wanted steak.

That includes eating at Mozaik, Limon in Gocek, Defne Pension, Guvens and Nil.

Not bad value at all tbh.

Depends what you are drinking and how many you have... Reference Food, Steak is always most expensive meal on the menu.
Never eaten at Kerim or Ali's  and only every ate once at Serkul 1 and did not enjoy the meal at all.

Drinks obviously put the cost of the evening up. We found most main courses were very reasonable and even the steaks were less than £10.

We tend to have a couple of large Efes and a couple of G&T's with our meals - maximum.

We've noticed that prices are being teased up by some establishments, but the main excuse I have heard from some is that the exchange rate has gone up, and therefore we charge more.  How they work that one out I do not know.

This particular problem is made worse when some places advertise their prices only in GBP and then have a second bite when people pay the 'english' bill in Turkish lira by charging a silly exchange rate, that people readily accept becasue they think they are getting a good deal.

I just wish that prices could only be in TL then everyone knows where they stand.  Yes I know they are supposed to be in TL, but no one enforces it so it continues on year after year.

Lots of other places actually.  Over the past year I've seen €10/15 menus in both Spain and Portugal, and they often come with a glass of wine or a beer.  Thinking specifically about the Costa del Sol, I know of several restaurants in the Malaga area where two can eat, drink (bottle of decent wine) and still get change out of €30.

I think its bad when bar owners adjust their prices to reflect the increased exchange rate.lets face it if it drops like a stone they wont bring the prices down.
Also its always the same few bars that do it.

Serkul 1, Gordon had breakfast one morning, not impressed,  missing a few items off the advertised meal. Brenda and Highlander caught us one evening as they were eating there, so we joined them, the evening meal, I could have produced better using a camping stove. Never again.

Beach House was very good, we ate there 2 or 3 times, otherwise Gunisik, consistent every time without fail, I just can't be bothered hunting round for a good place only to be disappointed.

We did not venture to Josephs bar this year, after reading and hearing that his draft beer measures were to pot. what do I know about beer?  our friends boycotted Ali's Bar because one night charged 9tl for the Cider, the next 12tl.

Nearly forgot, Sekul 1 breakfast advertised 12tl charged 14tl as the prices had just increased for the season. :(

The worst price increases we encountered was at Zayra 2, on the night we arrived 29th may a glass of white wine was advertised and charged at 2 lira, but by the 2nd June the price had increased to 7 lira!!.  I know they need to make a profit and 2 lira was very cheap, but a rise in price to that extent was a rip off, we did not go there again!!

That must have been a special for one night as we have been going there since it opened and it was the biggest glass ever when it opened for 6 lira and only 5 lira if bought with a meal and even now at 7 lira it is a bigger measure than any other we have had :-)

I agree Ian, never seen a glass of wine for 2tl at the Zayre or anywhere else recently.Cafe Pazar used to do a glass of wine for 2tl that was served from a plastic round bottle, and was an aquired taste but that was about 6 years ago.

Over the years of living here I watch the prices go up in the season and then drop back down out of season. It is part and parcel of living in a tourist resort. Bodrum and marmaris do the same as I have friends that live there and they talk about the same thing. :(

Prices are also on the increase in supermarkets. Each week I go food shopping there is at least 1 item that has gone up. So this will also affect the restaurants too, maybe that is why prices in the restaurants are on the increase. My wine has also increased in price at the market too in the last couple of weeka

Did the Ephesus trip yesterday. We stopped for a meal on the way back. Mrs Tiggsy asked the price of small water, 1 lira the reply, same as most places I guess. The couple next to us asked how much for a beer (bottle) 10 lira each. The couple opposite asked how much for 2 cokes (tins) 7 lira. Come pay time the guy that came to collect the money, assured us we had been told the price was in euros, thrice the lira price. Mrs Tiggsy refused to pay it. He became aggresive bawling and shouting in front of a packed restaurant. Manager came. He rants at the manger. I let him burn himself out and tried to have my say with the manager. The guy starts to become aggresive again so I stood up and shouted back "shut your mouth". Manger wasnt at all sympathetic, and we payed just the 1 lira. Principles in tact.

Happend to me in a Jewellery shop in Fethiye a number of year ago.  Price was quoted for piece I wanted altered and a few small repairs.  I was told 250.   When I went back and handed over the money, he told me he had meant £250.00.

No choice the guy insisted he was dealing in Sterling not Lira.  Had to bring Phil back with more money.  We did argue for a while but he said he always deals in Sterling for his British customers.  However, I knew we had been conned but what could we do... i have never used that shop again and the guy who sits outside all the time always looks at me and looks away.  They would have got lots of business from us and our family, particularly at my sons wedding when they got their rings, their bridesmaid had a ring made and I also got a piece of jewellery.  We gave our business to Sedat at Zumrut.  So ultimately, it was the Fethiye Jewellers loss.
So warning to everyone, always ask what currency you are dealing in at a Jewellery Shop.

Cannot praise Sedat from Zumrut enough, so no harm done.

Been to most resorts in the Mugla region recently and over the years... and the cheapest resort ( if resort is the right description  lol   ) is always here in Hisaronu  :o      The nearest resort Olu Deniz each year is going more and more `up market` particularly along the front where yesterday we were charged 5.50tl for a small glass with lots of ice   ( from the bottle not can ) diet  cola , and a Beer 11  tl ... Still nice over there during daytimes but refuse to go there at night... prefer remembering how it was in the late  90`s   ;D

Having just spent 2 weeks in Cala Galdana in Menorca I will never grumble about prices in Fethiye and Calis again !!!!   I know it is the most expensive resort on The island but hells bells. I need to get used to The Euro...   :)  :)

We were in Istanbul beginning of June most bars/restaurants where quite reasonable 9tl for efes 3 course meal for two 90-100tl including drinks, the most we paid for a 3 course meal with drinks was 140tl and that was at a restaurant called the Imabat which is or was in the top 10 restaurants on trip advisor and was one of the best meals I have ever eaten and I still thought it was great value for money
