Its 3.55 on Calis main street but check your figures - it is not 3.95 to buy in the UK - probably you are looking at the rate they will buy back off you - if you have any to sell them :-)

Two rates -exchange rate and tourist rate. XE is showing 3.65 right this minute but you won't get that as a tourist rate.

3.58 is excellent! We were getting 3.45 two weeks ago.

Why then Mr Calischangeoffice did your stop myself and my husband a couple of weeks ago and told us that the exchange rate advertised on your board was for tourists and if we went into your shop we could haggle a better rate? That seems like two rates to me!  ;
Title: Re: Exchange rate
Post by: stoop on June 22, 2014, 23:30:55 PM
Transfer money through your bank and you should get the full exchange rate (currently 3.64). Buy it at a change shop and you won't get that. You will get the tourist rate which allows for their profit.

Where exactly is your location in Calis. I did not realise there was an official change office there. Assuming you pay your taxes, it is the correct place to change money.

To the Change Man people join a forum to give advice and answer questions and not just to advertise their business.  So now you have joined I hope you will be helping people with questions and not just continuing to advertise.
Suehugh.  This office has been there since last year it's just up from Zumrut Jewellers. Since it opened all the places that change money have had to take down their adverts.

Title: Re: Exchange rate
Post by: stoop on June 24, 2014, 23:08:33 PM
What place is corrupt? Surely the whole point about trading in money is that the traders make a profit! If not they wouldn't do it.

The secret is to do your research and find out the official exchange rate before you buy. You'll never get it of course but the nearer you do the better.

It's a shame that Mr. Calischangeoffice doesn't take his crusade out on the German "gentleman" who lurks in the shop doorway in Fethiye.  I am sure that he is taking far more from the economy and the tourist than Sedat at Zumrut.  Like you Karennina, I was of the impression that the banks and the change shops had a fixed exchange rate (allowing for a profit to be made of course) and that if you changed money there, you would be getting a good and fair deal.  >:( :o

I have to say it's a great laugh that our member in the Official Change Office is swinging  the big stick as being the only Official Change Office. and saying we should not change money anywhere else.  Then we have Colin in Fethiye who spends the whole day outside his Estate Agency Shop and before that his Clothes Shop, enticing tourist in to Change their money.  He is not an Official Change Office and he is well know for how he short changes people, yet the authorities do nothing.
Over to you Calis Change Man.. let us have your opinion please.

And Jaqcui, he has a cardboard sign in his window advertising his rates. I see Zabita passing his shop all of the time, he's also located on the same stretch of road along with most of the banks, yet nothing is done. I think calischangeman is correct about the law but it's also illegal to sell fake Nike, Beats, Converse etc. in the markets and like the change money law, I wish you luck in enforcing the law on selling fake goods as well. It ain't going to happen !

That finans site can be misleading like a lot of them that display the "live" rate but that is not what you get!

You need to click through to:
[URL] http://www.finansbank.com.tr/en/banking/alternative-channels/internet-banking/exchange_rates.aspx?IntSbMO_FB_Depositrates_PU /URL]

Then suddenly 3.62 becomes 3.49 if you are buying lira and 3.75 if you are selling them your lira :-)
Title: Re: Exchange rate
Post by: kayakebab on June 25, 2014, 19:14:29 PM
When I changed some sterling to tl last week on finans site I clicked the tab that says investment and got the same rate as XE.com were showing, was definitely the live price.
You click it, it says the rate, asks you how much you're changing and that's the rate you get.
You can sit watching it change and get an extra couple of tl, like I did!
Title: Re: Exchange rate
Post by: Ian on June 25, 2014, 19:45:34 PM
It seems to differ on certain days - on the TEB bank site they show Central Bank Buy / Sell rates along side Investment Buy / Sell rates.

I watched it for a couple of weeks as I was going to change some sterling and it was noticeable that on Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon the variance from the "live" rate was +2 or -2 but at the beginning of the week it was +8 / -8 so I did my exchange on the Thursday and got 3.61 when earlier in the week it was same Central Bank rate but they were offering less.

The change shops were offering 3.50 on the same day.
Maybe finans are different and maybe the political climate over the border affects it - who knows but its Thurs / Fri for me from now on :-)

yes me too Sadler, it always has been in the past...We checked the rate at the Calis change shop and it was 3.55 then also at the change shop in Fetiyhe which was 3.56 had some banking to do which was a total nightmare, started the transaction for changing sterling and asked the exchange rate to whuch I was told 3.51 when I said it was 3.56 at change shop I was told no it isn't, anyway it was too late to stop the transaction but a lesson has been learned I shall in future always check the rate, it was not quite so much as the difference in money but feeling like we had been had...

New to this site but very confused about where is the best place to exchange your money. There are so many people saying this or that place is best or worse. So Like booty81 I would like to know where would everyone actually recommend changing their money up? Could we have a best place to get your Lira Vote?  Just a thought to make it less confusing to us newbies.

Zumrut Jewellers  in Calis Beach and the Official Change Offices in Fethiye or the Banks in Fethiye. These are the only places we would use.

Forgive me but isn't that a contradiction. People are honestly giving their opinion and you are then asking them to actually recommend a place. Surely they have already done that by responding to you. A vote would not be as straight forward as you might think.

For example. you might get 0.09 more lira to the GBP from a bank in Fethiye than from Zumrut in Calis (our personal choice every time) but you will have spent time and money doing it. Some people, us included, couldn't be bothered.

As with most things, you pays your money and you take your choice.

We get the best rate at the ATM using the bankcard. The difference is up to 10 lira per 100 euro. That includes costs.

Which bank card are you using John and which ATM?  We used to use our Nationwide bank card in the ATM at Calis but found that the sterling had frequently run out.  We bring cash now (risky I know) and change it at either Zumrut or Edi(?) next to B52, or when in Fethiye at the Change Office.

I think we should just keep this post very clear for them and not go off track.

I have already given the poster the most clear advice, as I always try do to with people who ask questions.
I seem to attract people who follow my postings to make silly remarks.  However, as constant fans you would think they would now be able to get my name right.

If that remark was aimed at me Jacqui, I certainly do not follow you around, I have neither the time nor interest. I was with my warped sense of humour, noting that you frequently go off thread yourself. As for your name I have a daughter with a middle name of Jacquline and several friends with the same name. They all spell their nick names differently and none of them gets agitated if sometimes one forgets who spells theirs which way. Life is too short!

Use a "good" credit card wherever you can. Halifax Clarity card for example gives a perfect exchange rate and no fees, including withdrawal fees at ATMs.

Interest does accrue on cash withdrawals immediately but the actual amount is minimal if you pay off the withdrawals quickly. I do this by using a banking app on my smartphone whilst I'm on holiday a day or two after making a withdrawal. I paid about £1 total in interest last year on around £800 of cash withdrawals.

Plus, you avoid the worry of carrying large amounts of £'s around with you and searching various places for the best exchange rate.

Comparison of the card v UK Bureau de Change:

http://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/holiday-money/turkish%20liras/collection/weeks/500-pounds-worth#results

Changing £500 in this method would result in an extra 118 lira compared to the "best" UK Bureau de Change.

I found where Jacqui suggested very good indeed as a Tourist, but, if you come regularly may I suggest a daily check on
this and a trip to Tesco and change in bulk, I changed £1000 at about 3.79 early in the year. It was trading about 3.67 today so maximum you would get about 3.5

This is a very good credit card BUT you are charged 12.9% APR on ATM withdrawals until you pay them off. If you save up for your holiday before you go a "good" debit card is even better. I use Norwich & Peterborough - no ATM fee, no exchange rate "loading" AND no interest to be paid on withdrawals.

If we were all fortune tellers we could buy at the best rate.  We bought from Debenham's early in the year at 3.81.  If we could do this every time it would be great, but no one knows what will happen to the Lira from week to week.  Since we bought and came over and spent our money in May/June, the rate has been better in Turkey than the U.K.

I'd made the point about repaying ATM withdrawals quickly. My interest rate is actually 21.9% (bad risk obviously) but I still only paid about £1 in interest in a 2 week trip last year.

Plus, I'd rather lose or get a credit card stolen than my debit card. If your bank account is emptied (by someone other than you), would you get your money back?

Debit card debts are fully covered from the time you report to the bank that they are missing. Moreover, as was highlighted in the CPP misselling affair, in the great majority of cases your bank will cover for for all losses above £50 incurred before you report - and this £50 is only if your bank can show you didn't take reasonable care over your card or pin. However, I can see the argument in favour of the right credit card as well. Taking more than one card and keeping them separately is a sensible precaution.

P.S. I think the regulations for debit cards are the same as those for credit cards.

3.51 in the UK at The Money Shop, special offer this weekend. A good rate for that bit of cash when you arrive.
