Title: Egypt
Post by: Scunner on July 19, 2014, 20:00:03 PM
Has anyone holidayed in Sharm El Sheikh and done a trip to the Pyramids? If yes, was it ok or a grueling experience? Thanks  :)

Our friends went there to a 5 star Hotel.  The day they were due to go to the Pyramids they both had food poisoning and our lady friend ended up in hospital on a drip.  Apparently down to the serve yourself food in the hotel not being at the right temperature.
Phil, went to the Pyramids when he was on a business trip to Cairo.  He was very disappointed, said there was rubbish blowing everywhere and so many people pestering him to buy things etc.,  He hated it.

I've holidayed in Sharm a couple of times, & also in Cairo, so haven't "done" the pyramids from Sharm. Personally, I wouldn't want to do an overland trip between the two, but would take the opportunity to fly, see the pyramids & sphinx & also the museum in Cairo, where they have all the Tutankhamun artifacts. Overland trips in Egypt tend to be in convoy, with armed guards, something I didn't fancy travelling as a lone female, when I did the Aswan to Abu Simbel trip, & may not appeal to you, particularly if you have the girls in tow.

Sharm airport is no more than 30 mins from the Na'ma Bay area (even less from Sharks Bay) & it was about an hour from Cairo airport to the pyramids.  I have an Egyptian friend back in blighty, who I believe still has a number of contacts in the travel trade in Cairo, so if you want help, just shout.

Thanks guys - I've been offered excursions to the Pyramids from places I have holidayed in - even Cyprus??!! So wondered if we tried Sharm next year would it be easy or an ordeal. Sounds like an ordeal and that won't do.

Is Na'ma bay better than Sharks bay?

For me it has to be Na'ma Bay, a lot of the hotels are on the promenade & you can take a nice gentle stroll to loads of restaurants, including some that are on the beach. Unlike every other place I've visited, in Egypt, dining in Sharm isn't just in hotel restaurants.

Also there are plenty of shops for the girls that are easily accessible

I went to Sharm El Sheik last year, it had been on my to do list for a while. We were a couple of miles from Naama Bay and we ventured in a couple of times, I found it the loudest, brashest, dirtiest, most mental place I have ever been in my life. The taxi drivers were maniacs, I always thanked my lucky stars when I managed to get out of one alive! The hassle you get everywhere is the worst I have ever experienced, and they frequently fight amongst themselves for your business. It was an experience, I am not sorry I went, but I would never go back or recommend it, especially with young girls. My daughter was 30 when we went and they were all over her like a rash, constantly, she was flashed at, she was chased, it became very uncomfortable, we were glad to go home after a week.

Your comments sum up exactly why I would never go to this filthy place.

We are going across to Sharm in January, looked at the pyramid trip but was well warned off, going to valley of the kings instead, a place my wife always wanted to visit, it's about 1 hr flying time but it is an early start 0500 hrs I think, so that may be a better option.

I always fancied going to the Egypt and the Pyramids'  but after Phil's trip and what he told me, it put me right off.
He stayed in an Hotel outside Cairo, which he said was the best thing about the trip.  Nice Hotel where you could swim from the inside pool under a tunnel to the outside pool.  He said the traffic into Cairo every day was mad, he had never seen anything like it and people had to try and cross by dodging the cars.  He also said how dirty everything was and also so many people pestering him and begging.  He was taken out to the Pyramids by the company he was visiting, they laid on a guide for him, but as I said the rubbish blowing around and the constant attention from people trying to sell him stuff really put him right off.

We stayed naama bay for christmas a few years back. The place was as christmasy as london, decorations, christmas trees, even santa came to the door with a present xmas morning. It was great, shops were good, no hassle. I did feel like I should cover up there though. Nothing anyone said, kept my arms covered wore long trousers while I was walking about. Xmas day we were on beach, did a glass bottom boat trip. Boxing day went camel trecking with an Egyptian night in the desert at the end. Food was good. We would have gone back but had to change the booking when the riots were in the square. My next choice to go to is El Gouna, think its called hotel riana. you can hire a private taxi to take you to pyramids and back from there really cheap.

I've had 4 wonderful holidays in Egypt, three of them as a lone female; first to Luxor, then a 2 centre Cairo & Aswan, followed by Sharm el Sheikh for a New Year break a few years ago. Most recently, I was with friends in Sharm to celebrate my mate's "significant" birthday in November 2012. I have had no worse hassle than that experienced in Marmaris or Kusadsi & when out sight seeing with guides, it is part of their remit to ward off street peddlars (according to an Egyptian friend, who previously worked as a guide all around Egypt).

Unfortunately, on the latest visit, the advice was to NOT go on trips into the desert, so my friends didn't get to see St Catherine's Monastry, site of the biblical burning bush, which is at the bottom of Mt Sinai. We did venture out on one of the boat trips to the reef, on Maggie's birthday. On hearing that it was her birthday, she was treated as royalty by the captain & crew; they found candles for the afternoon cake & one of them gave her a small present.

Thanks again for the great input. We are thinking for Sharm for our holiday next year and because trips to the Pyramids were on offer from other non-Egypt holidays we'd been on I thought this may be the best way to see them. Truth is, I don't find hours of travelling within our holiday to be much of a vacation  :)

Also we can all do without heavy hassling on hols - I think we may give the pyramids a miss if we go (and I hope we will).

A fabulous way to see Egypt is on a Nile cruise, I've been on two and absolutely loved every second. It's like stepping back in time into an Agatha Christie movie. Too far to visit the pyramids unless you fly, but loads of ancient sites and tombs, Valley of the Kings, Abu Simbel, Aswan dam, Luxor etc etc. Being on the ship you are away from all the hassling and begging, although you are faced with it every time you step ashore. Thoroughly recommended

Hi
have stayed in share

and done the pyramid s from there we flew to them with a company off the net
sorry can't remember the company's name..  Had an amazing time yes there can be a bit of rubbish but that doesn't
detract from how awesome they are. If you fly you also have a  good length of time in  the museum.
wouldn't have missed it for the world. Can't wait to go back (am a bit of an ancient Egypt  fan) Mrs stew

I've been to Egypt at least once a year for the last ten years. Nor normally to Sharm (though I have stayed there once) and also transited through Sharm airport last year and transferred up to Taba where I usually stay since the weekly flights from Manchester to Sharm were cut by Thomson.

Like all resorts, Sharm has it's good and bad points. Personally I prefer Taba Heights to Sharm it is quieter and the dive sites are not busy, but due to the current FCO warning I will not be travelling to Taba unless it is lifted before December and so will stay in Sharm.

I have been to Cairo and the Pyramids on an organised trip. I thought it was wonderful. The Egyptian Museum and particularly the Tutankhamen Room was a brilliant experience. Seeing the tourist police on camels rather than on horseback is ace! The trip to Cairo, if you go overland, is long and I would not recommend it in the current political climate. Flying is easy but obviously more costly.

If you just want a peaceful, great value holiday with great service and sunshine in the Winter then Egypt is a fantastic. I always travel alone and have never been hassled as a lone female. But then I've stayed away from Soho Square and booked into a good quality resort hotel.

We have been to Sharm el Sheikh a few times and stayed in some beautiful hotels outside of Naama Bay- Grand Hyatt, Four Seasons and The Baron Resort which was an excellent All Inc. if you choose a good 5 star you will not go wrong. We flew to Luxor, went to the Valley of Kings,Karnak Temple and a trip on the Nile on a felucca - an early start but not to be missed! We also flew to Jordan and went to Petra, truly amazing experience  second only to the Taj Mahal. I appreciate that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but these are places that should not be missed in your lifetime. Sharm is a good base and with careful hotel selection and location is no problem at all.

Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but if you are really blown away by the wonders talked about within this thread, some litter, dirt or whatever, however off putting in a normal situation, would surely pale into insignificance at these places and hardly become noticeable.  Perhaps if they become the main focus, the visitor is not truly "into" these wonders and would be more satisfied in a well kept holiday resort. Just saying, not a critisism.  :)

Done sharm 3 times now, February being the most recent. Stayed at 2 amazing hotels , Rixos 2012 and hilton waterfalls 2013 and one ok - Rehana Sharm, this year. Nabq bay is 15 mins from airport but not much there. Nama bay is bonkers, but it's good to go in a couple of times to visit. Imagine fethiye 20 years ago- on speed ! Fabulous to have a winter sunshine break. Wouldn't fancy it in our summer though, burning hot and lots of flies.  It's purpose built for tourists and it's based around AI hotels, so the better the hotel the better the experience. IMHO. As an indication we have decided on canaries for next feb !
