Many years ago on CBF I wrote a little piece bemoaning the falling standard of promenading along the Calis promenade. It was a lighthearted piece, although quite strongly felt. I enjoyed promenading with Hilary and taught both of my daughters the art of the promenade when in Calis - and that was before the block paving was laid when the front was tarmac in a sad state of deterioration. I taught them that if you were clearly walking "seriously" (i..e. with the evident pursuit of the promenade), and focused your eyes on the far middle distance, then people would almost magically melt out of your way and restaurant callers-in/hasslers would see your serious intent and merely wave as you passed saying "Might see you later". Hardly ever were you forced to deviate your chosen course. My teenage girls were astonished when this actually worked and I was required to sashay the prom twice nightly - once with each of them.
However, we now live in the age of the mobile or "smart" phone (what an oxymoron!). People everywhere, and not just the young, seem incapable of getting through their day without, at any opportunity, staring at a tiny screen. This happens even when walking {I believe in Japan it is known as "dumb walking"} . So, is it now possible to promenade the Calis promenade or would you keep crashing into dumb walkers? I invite/urge those CBF members currently in Calis to test this and to report back.
In the meanwhile, here is the view of one Bristolian on where we find ourselves now - "Mobile Lovers".

Colwyn, I think that so-called " dumb walkers " , whilst being absolutely bloody annoying to the " Nth " degree, are the least of " promenaders " problems on Calis beach-front !! One is just as likely to be run over by illegal motorcycle/scooters, and now those stupid Segue type three-wheeled inventions, as well as the abundance of arrogant, self-centred cyclists, mostly Brits/Germans, with their dogs on a leash attached to the bike !! >:( >:(

The one thing I love each time we, as a family do, when we come out to Turkey is switch off our phones. Its great! so much peace and quiet in such a fantastic place, just wish I could do it more often.

You can get an app now that shows in your screen what is in front of you.
You can now text without bumping into people.

I love my iPad but I wouldn't dream of taking it on a night out & sit opposite my husband who was also on his iPad at a venue with live entertainment!

In my opinion there is a time and a place for viewing your mobile phone, I pad etc. but being out with family and friends is not one of them. Unless it is an emergency there is no reason at all to have the dreadful objects on your person!!

Well I have to be honest, M and I love our papers, (both different) and when on holiday, we can either stay at home to read or enjoy the glory of an open air coffee/wine bar, so we do take our iPads and read them quietly together usually with a lovely outlook. We certainly haven't lost the art of conversation, I think M likes it for the peace. Most enjoyable. ;)

That's quite different Lotty! But to go to a great night's dining with entertainment from professional musician & singer & sit with an iPad is just odd! Maria

Even worse,
when watching live entertainment, a person in from of you holds up their iPad to take a picture or worse still a video - oblivious to the fact they are blocking everyone's view with it.
