Any advice. Have heard from few people who have flown recently. They are being told not to lock there suitcases.?? Has anyone heard this
-
I've not heard of that in Europe, only when flying to USA.
-
it is to check any phones or tablets, computers that the terrorists might be using to cause damage to aircraft.all electronics in hand luggage may be inspected and you could be asked to switch them on.not heard of anybody yet that has to get them out of hold luggage.
-
People are being advised to use padlocks which allow security checks on the contents of suitcases by customs people whilst maintaining security. These padlocks can be opened with a special key by customs. I know that unscrupulous people could eventually copy these keys but the US have had no problem with them in recent years. Valuables should really go in hand luggage.

Can't we put laptops phones etc in hold luggage now?
-
Not advisable at all Slikmrs, 2 years ago I accidentally put a watch in my hold luggage on a trip back to Turkey via Istanbul & didn't notice until I got home that one of the zipper pulls through which the padlock had passed had been broken & the watch was missing, although they did leave the box it was in! >:(
-
Thanks Hamlet, we are with jet2 so have 10kg each. Back to the battery out of laptops for weigh in and back in for them to be checked. : :)
-
I never lock my case, I don't see the point after seeing this video.

Slikmrs, I've just found this on the Jet2 website, I think that all airlines have the same regs, ie; no valuables in hold luggage!
"Please note: We shall have no liability whatsoever for damage to articles not permitted to be contained in checked baggage, including fragile or perishable items, items having a special value, such as money, house and car keys, jewellery, precious metals, cameras, computers, personal electronic devices including iPods, business documents or other valuables, passports and other identification documents, or samples. Please see our full Terms and Conditions for further details."

Thanks Hamlet, really kind of you. ;D

Not if you want to keep them. Some friends came over for a holiday and one case went missing. She still didn't get it back after returning home. If you value it - hang on to it - TIGHT.
-
No problem Slikmrs, your plane awaits, have a good flight 8)

I recall a Jet2 flight where everyone had hand baggage (Jet2's fault for charging for checked in luggage) and there was no overhead locker space left. They insisted those who couldn't find a space gave their bags to the crew, to go in the hold. One passenger was absolutely furious about this and was saying she didn't want to be parted from it. At the time I wondered why she made such a fuss. Now I know.

According to a watchdog program some time ago where holiday insurance was under scrutiny the advice given was if you leave your camera, laptop, jewellery etc. in your hold luggage it is not covered by your insurance ! only clothes, shoes etc. should be in the hold baggage your expensive equipment should be kept with you when travelling as it is a prime target for theft during transport once it goes through ex-ray they have the pick of whatever they desire. the suitcase video shown on here was also played on the same program. I have never risked leaving my camera or laptop in hold luggage since for fear of it not being covered.

Our newest case locks (not the zip type) and also has a keyhole (TSA) for the USA customs to open it if the wish. I think many cases are putting these on now.
We've always steered clear of the zip type as we have never really trusted them.
It's not this one but is very similar (and much cheaper at our local Designer Outlet Centre in York)

Which gives the question of what happens if Jet2 or Easyjet insist on putting your hand baggage in the hold?

I have in the past used similar good quality 'hard shell' cases but none have survived unscathed from the 'considerate' way they are handled once they were out of my possession.
There is also the matter of weight.
With the airlines cutting down on weight allowances several years ago I opted to use lighter 'soft' cases or holdalls, dependant on the purpose of the trip.
When I go back to the UK, the current Mrs Hamlet usually gives me a shopping list to bring back that would take me to the limit if using a 'hard shell' case, but by using the lighter case (2.5kg), it allows me to bring something that I might want as well :)

Presumably you would have a year long battle with the airline & the insurer for compensation & if you are lucky you might end up with a 'free' sandwich & coffee voucher for your next flight, date restrictions, routes and based on 8 people flying together of course ;)

Hamlet.
We still use our original Samsonite cases (hard shell with combi locks) .
Just discussing with Maggie when we got them and we think it was when we first went to Florida in 1994!
They've been all over the world with us and are still in good nick. We've only just bought an updated model due to wanting spinner wheels. It will be interesting to see how it fairs in comparison.
I can't praise Samsonite enough. Expensive but buy from an outlet and you will get a great deal.

I'm not advocating that anyone risk their valuables in suitcases as a matter of course, but just as an antidote to the stories where things have gone wrong.....
During our move this year we have safely transported two flat-screen HD televisions, a PS3, a PS2, a Wii, two laptops, two tablets and a quantity of camera equipment via our flights with Jet2. There was just no way we could have got it all in our hand luggage!
-
Agree Stoop, our Samsonite hard shell cases have been with us for over 10 years and are still as good as new.
I have bought two new ones, but am passing the old ones on to members of the family.
The largest hard shell case is just under 5 kilos. They are great for anything that might be breakable in a soft suitcase. Also the soft suitcases can be so easily opened with a knife by just slashing the material.
-
They now do a hard shell with locks that weighs just 2.5kg. Costly but if you want the quality and lower weight it could be worth it to some.
-
Just to remind people. The aircraft hold is not heated and many electronic items can malfunction if subject to extreme cold. Hold temperatures can reach -50C and I have known camera's refuse to work after being put in cases.

That's exactly why I never deliberately put valuables or breakables in hold luggage! :)
-
Breakables could be G.H.D's bottles of perfume from D.&.P. Perfumes, any glass souvenirs such as the lamps that are sold in the Mozaik Bahce. pictures, vases etc., All impossible to put in a soft suitcase and all too heavy to put in hand luggage. I do put all my valuable items in my hand luggage. However, breakable souvenirs go in my hard shell case.

Cheap copies from D & P Jackie, I would have thought you would be buying originals from the Duty Free and having them in hand luggage. :o

I did not say the D.&.P. perfume was for me. Just orders from friends and family. However, wish I could get a copy of my favourite perfume at the D.&.P shop like the Duty Free, they do not sell it.
I do always try new perfumes each time I go to the Duty Free in Aberdeen. Phil aways gets me one. I take it with me to Calis and use it there and then and then bring it back in my hard shell suitcase, so as it does not break. ;)
-
Strangely enough, in the 12 years we have owned our soft cases & the holdalls, even longer, we have not had any bottles etc broken. I suppose it is down to how well you wrap & pack! 8)

Not sure about this. I think in modern aircraft the hold gets the heat after the cabin - so certainly cooler but still usually 5-10 deg - otherwise your toothpaste etc would be a popsicle after a 4hr flight.

I think you can get things home safely (without breaking) in both soft and hard cases. It's the zips that put us off. Never felt safe with them and after seeing that video I know why now.

My dear late Mum in Law had a large soft top case. She came to stay with us and bought a few gifts to take back including some sweaters. We took her to the Airport and she had a large cabin bag and her suitcase. When she arrived home in N.Ireland my Sister in law help her with her bags. When they opened the suitcase, two jars of jam (which I assumed where in her hand luggage) had broken in her large suitcase and the jam was all over her clothes and her new sweaters.
