Title: Terrorist threat to tourists on Turkish Beaches.
Post by: Jacqui Harvey on September 11, 2014, 17:57:14 PM
I really hope this is not true.  This was in the Star today.

Let's wait until The Sun run the story. Then we'll know it's true.

But the danger area is within 10 kms of the border with Syria, I don't think we should start panicking unneccessarily. Yes, it's worrying, but Turkey is a huge country, and tourists in the main don't tend to travel that close to the border with Syria.

I don't read the Star, this piece was sent to me as it appeared on a social networking website.
The British Government warn Brits not to go within 10k of the Border. I don't think there will be many British tourists  so near the border.
The threat by terrorists is to tourists on beaches.  I would think these beaches will be in the popular tourist areas.  So people do need to be concerned, if this is true.

It's probably best to be forewarned about these sorts of things but they tend to work by worrying and attempting to spoil the experiences of people rather than by directly happening. Many will remember bombs going off in Turkey and even in Fethiye (although many years ago now) so really we should all be vigilant at all times and in all places these days.

I will take this as a direct and specific concern when it appears on the FCO website, not in the Daily Star :P

There is a warning in the Daily Mail too, for tourists to be careful. Although not the same as the Star's warning.

If I don't go on the beach in Calis because of the threat, real or otherwise, the terrorist will have won

The Daily Mail article is an old one dated 2003, if you check out the incidents it refers to at each of the locations named they occurred in that year.

The Daily Mail never has anything good to say about Turkey anyway.

2003 wasn't a good year in the 'Bul.  HSBC bank, British Consulate, synagogues, branches of McDonalds all targeted.  Dozens killed and hundreds injured and maimed.

But you just got on with things, apart from the Americans.  They moved the consulate out to an armoured concrete blockhouse miles from the other consulates, way out in Yenikoy.  The British rebuilt the consulate and it is business as usual.

For Gods sake, get a grip and stop worrying if the one in a billion chance will involve you. Are you more at risk in London, New York, Paris or Calis? I've no idea but I'm not loosing sleep.

I figure I'm at more risk of being hit by a car/bus as I cross the road (especially now I live here  ;D ) so if my number is up, I'd rather go while I'm leaping off a mountain/lounging on the beach/visiting a new city or generally doing something I really enjoy.

YOLO, as the kids say.

I would have thought that the situation occurring in Scotland at the minute would give you a bigger reason to panic and stress, Jacqui! :o
