Last night 4 of us asked a taxi driver at the Fethiye PTT how much to go to Çaliş
He said 35TL, I told him it was a rip off price and he said 30, I said no again and he said 25, I told him he had lost a customer as I would not use him at all.
This is just to inform people to check the price before attempting to get in the taxi.
Last week I asked the taxi driver at Çaliş Plaj entrance how much to the Kaan hotel, he said 15TL, I told him it was 10 at the dolphin roundabout, so he just said, ''Go there then'' which is what we did and went for 10TL
Good 'ere innit

Fethiye taxis in general are a complete rip off in comparison to most other town and cities in Turkey. You can travel half way across Istanbul for what they charge to go from Migros to Ikinci Karagözler.

The first time my youngest son came out to us and didn't know the score
he got a taxi from Oludeniz up the hill to Hisaronu and got charged £ 10
by a robbing b#####d. >:(

Not taxi related but my neighbours have just returned from their first visit to Turkey - Marmaris but you can't win 'em all. Their hotel was AI and the entertainment was apparently awful. They asked a guy on the door of another hotel if they could come to their entertainment, and of course spend their money at the bar.
The guy replied yes they could but it would cost them 1,000 lira to get in!

We paid 40tl to the Huzer Evi. The guy we now use from calis is on a metre and I have been charged between 28 and 40 depending where in Fethiye we are going!

Again not taxi related; I've just returned from the market, one of the stalls had really nice looking tomatoes @ 1tl & also mushrooms @ 7tl, both of which I needed. For 1/2kg of tomatoes & half a dozen mushrooms, he told me 5tl. I queried the total & all of a sudden the price was halved. Don't think he liked being told he was a thieving g1t >:(

Yep had that one Liz. I went to Hisaronu one night a few years ago, and on the way home wanted to buy 1 tomato for a butty. Shop keeper told me 4TL...Needless to say I told him to stuff it. (He obviously thought I was a tourist).

I've mentioned this before but a few years ago I wrote to the Turkish Embassy in London
and asked if their staff had to pay more for anything they purchased in the UK because they
were Turkish, the way people from the UK have to endure the "Yabanci" pricing scams in Turkey.??
To date I have not received a reply. >:(

Dual pricing happens all over the world in areas where tourists are present.
Is it right? No, but it happens and theres nothing the governments etc can practically do about it. I know in Turkey you can phone the Zabita, but as someone there on holiday for a week do you really want to go down that road?
As a full time resident it'll still happen, but if you're living there you need to be aware of the market rate for goods and services - you get quoted too much, move on and go somewhere else. Or argue the toss, which ever works for you, and your wallet.
One of the most obvious examples of this is Cuba - locals use pesos which if you change $20 for in a bank they dont count it for you, they weigh it. Foreigners are expected to use the CUC (convertible Unit of Currency) which used to be more closely aligned with the dollar rate. Fortunately, they are phasing out the CUC (may even be gone already) as it was a serious pain in the arse when you were in areas outwith the tourist trails having to juggle the two.
Edit: meant to say... as a result of the dual currencies it was obvious locals paid a fraction of what tourists did - we got a peso menu by mistake and the food was priced roughly peso=CUC. I think at the time the exchange rate was somewhere around 240 pesos to 1 CUC!

I got ripped off at Çalış market for the umpteenth time yesterday. I haven't been going to the market for weeks, I prefer to get my fruit and veg at the supermarket where I don't get overcharged. Yesterday I was walking through the market anyway, so decided to get some fruit, I bought 3 peaches and 3 bananas and paid 10 TL ! I won't go again, I shall stick to Migros.

When they tell you the price, if you think it's too much just say "yok " and walk away.
That way they then know that someone else will get your money.
Don't be embarrassed to do it. They don't feel too embarrassed to rip you off.
It's probably the only thing I hate about Turkey. :(

I always pay the price in the metre is that wrong?

At the beginning of our holiday this year six of us got in a seven seat taxi from the dolphin roundabout to Koca Calis. Can't remember the cost but I don't recall it being expensive. Nearer the end of the holiday we went back to the same taxi rank, again for a taxi back to Koca Calis for six of us. It was a different driver from the first time. This time the taxi driver would not take us in one taxi - he said he would only take us if we had two taxis. We could clearly see that the cars lined up were capable of taking six passengers, in fact the driver who had taken us on the first trip was there. We just walked away and went to taxi rank near the entrance to the beach and got a taxi back to Koca Calis - in the same make of seven seat vehicle that we had been refused at the dolphin roundabout.

My experience (or rather my husband's) of Fethiye Taxis is somewhat different. He got a taxi from the PTT rank to our home in Ciftlik. As he has a tremor (similar to Parkinson's) he struggled to get the cash out of his wallet to pay the fare and the taxi-driver helped him by taking the notes from him. A couple of weeks or so later, whilst passing the PTT he heard a shout, was tapped on the shoulder, and turned round to find the self-same taxi driver handing him back 20 lira with an apology for taking the wrong fare. Needless to say we asked for his card and when we require a taxi from Fethiye he gets our business every time.
