I have just sent a Personal Message and the green banner came up saying it was sent successfully.
However, it is not in my 'sent items' ? Does it take a while ?

Did you tick 'save a copy box'?  Or words to that effect.

Did you tick the box to "save a copy in my outbox"? Its unchecked by default.
