Title: A tragic family who need some help
Post by: Highlander on November 18, 2014, 10:28:30 AM
I have deliberately posted this here to hopefully get more exposure than in the Embrace Fundraisers News and Events section.

I was very moved by the last part of this post by hubblebubbles in the Bambu closed for the winter thread.

Please read about the tragic family.

http://www.calis-beach.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=57020.msg382958#new

Even although I know that many of you have already been kind enough to sign up to the Twelve Days of Christmas, I’m going to be being a right royal pain in the posterior and ask you to please, please  help this family.

I would like to run an advent calendar especially for this cause. I would want this one to take precedent over the other Advent calendar thread and I sincerely hope that we can fill at least one calendar.

For those who don’t know - here’s how it will work hopefully.

I have randomly allocated a number to the 25 days from the first to the twenty-fifth of December.

You choose a number and I put your name against the date.

Behind each door of the calendar is a monetary amount – 10 x £ 5’s, 10 x £10’s, 4 x £ 15’s and 1 x £ 20.

By choosing a number you agree to donate the amount behind the door.

I will open a door each day starting on the first to reveal the amount behind the door and the name of the person who was allocated that day.

Many thanks for your time. I hope you can help

I can only agree with John. Wow what a fantastic result so far .Totally unexpected and unasked for  as we did not request  cash donations but John very kindly suggested it. He is aware of the situation as I emailed him with the story. As you know "Embrace" never give personal information on those that we are fortunate enough to be able to help so here is a brief outline . Two beautiful intelligent brothers aged 12 and 8 have an inherited gene which means they will lose their hands and feet ...a process which has already started sadly .We took them to see a neurologist in Esnaf  plus another specialist regarding the state of their poor little fingers as they have lost their nails and the tips of the fingers already .They are from a very poor family who I have personally visited and they live about an hours drive from Calis  . The 2 roomed "house" doesn't even have windows just polythene tacked to the frames which does little to keep out the bitter cold they experience as they are in a mountainous area .They really are a beautiful family and the eldest boy needs specially made boots to support his feet and legs which we are in the process of buying as they have to be specially made . They have so little but were so hospitable to us on our visit . They are also very proud and it took many phone calls and a Turkish speaking friend to convince them that its ok to accept help for the children as we understand they are unable to pay for  the necessary items the children need and that is why our charity exists . We are hoping to locate a Neurologist who specialises particularly in this field of medicine and we are hoping he will see them to see if the progress of the disease can be slowed down with medication .He is somewhere in Istanbul so fingers crossed we can arrange for the boys to go to see him . Thank you everyone for supporting Johns fundraiser as I know there is so much we can do to help make their lives a little more comfortable .I have to say they were in awe that someone who doesn't know them is willing to help. I am so grateful they came to our attention via a friend of a friend. Sorry for such a long post but having met them it is a subject very close to my heart right now

I realise that we as individuals cannot help every deserving case that comes along, but when a family like this is brought to our attention it brings it home how much we have that we take for granted.  Could someone not help them with the window problems, it can do no good at all for children who are already going through so much, to be living in bitterly cold conditions like they are.  I know the parents do not want to accept charity, but if it was for the sake of the kids could something more be done for them. Thank you Mavis and John for bringing this heartbreaking case to the attention of the very generous members of this forum.

Thanks bewva but it was you and other members of the Forum who filled it.  :)

As I said the story of this family did move me and it's great that we can help in some way.

All I can say is a massive thank you to all who have taken part.

I'm sure everyone who helped fill the calendar feels, like me, that we're glad to be able to help even if it's in a small way.

I have two gorgeous, healthy grandsons and it's reading stories like this makes you realise how lucky you are.  I hope these two boys can get some of the help they desperately need.

But a big thank you to Highlander for all his efforts, once again, in bringing it to everyone's attention and his organisational skills!    ;)

For those who may not have seen hubblebubbles post elsewhere.....

I am delighted to be able to tell members that I have received to two very generous donations for the family.

One is from kevin3 who everyone will know is a tremendous supporter of various charities and is always amongst the first to participate in things that I do on here. Very many thanks  Kevin.

The other, equally generous donation is from someone who has sent me money privately before but, as in that instance, wishes to remain anonymous. I, of course can only respect that decision no matter how much I would want to herald their name from the rooftops. Thank you so much – you are very kind.

I have transferred the money donated and it has been safely received so hopefully it will be helping the family very soon.

Aren’t CBF members wonderful.  :)

Once again I am delighted to report to members that I have received another donation.

I am waiting to hear if the very kind person will let me reveal his/her name. Obviously, I would very much like to.   :)

PS these donations are in addition to the money that the advent calendar will raise, so many thanks.

There certainly are some very kind and generous people on this forum who do not wish to attract recognition.  Respect to you and to all who give above and beyond especially at this time of year when we seem to have so much compared to some others.   :)
Title: Re: A tragic family who need some help
Post by: Highlander on November 29, 2014, 11:38:43 AM
There are indeed Old Nick, there are indeed.

It is a very difficult balance between asking people (more than once) to help and appearing to badger them into parting with their hard earned cash.

But there are over 11,000 members on this forum and it has in the past and continues to provide invaluable information on a huge variety of subjects. And all for free.

So it seems to me little enough to put something back in the shape of help for children who have very little in an area which has provide us with such pleasure.

So if members feel they can help, I'd be very grateful.   :)

Strangely, after day two, here we find ourselves in day three  :).

As with day two there was £10 behind the door.

Title: A BIG hug for a mystery man..
Post by: hubblebubbles on December 12, 2014, 12:42:13 PM
Well there would be if I could find him...... A man called in at the shop in Gunlukbasi on Thursday and left and envelope for me. I was not working that day so didn't receive it until today . He said he was paying for a box on the calendar but had also enclosed some extra for the charity. SOME EXTRA !!!!!.The envelope contained £200 . We were amazed and thrilled as it means we can do so much more for this family .Bless you and thank you kind sir and if you want to collect your hug please return to the shop but let me know when you are going .It was really a thrill to open the envelope and on such a wintery day .

I have now collected all of the donations including the latest from gilly1, who despite not being at all well, took the time to send me a donation.

More about that in a "A Christmas Gift from CBF".

I would also like to mention a member who promised to give me a donation at the CBF Glasgow Christmas bash. Unfortunately, she was not at all well that night and it slipped her mind. To be honest I had forgotten all about the pledge too.

But she hadn’t ! and sent me a very generous donation the other day,

So a huge thank you to the wonderful toky  :)
