Title: Where CBF members live (2)
Post by: Highlander on December 27, 2014, 12:01:13 PM
"Where CBF members live" used to be a very popular thread. I did find it but there is only one post in it so I thought I'd start a new one.

This is not my photograph but shows Dingwall nesting below the magnificent Ben Wyvis.

Yeah, yeah KKOB   :) - I presume the reason there is only one left is because of the problem with the server and/or the change over from the old Forum.

Steve (redding43) - I was aware of the Members Map   :). But the thread I mentioned had lots of members photos of their local area.

PS The Members Map tab is not working from that link (well not for me at least). You can of course see the map by going to the Members Profile.

We are on a hill with a view of 30 miles in one direction, so mountains.  Right in front of us is Slains Castle, the cliffs and the North Sea.

I have to say that we are so lucky with our view. Don't be fooled into thinking we live in a grand house! We are part of half a dozen little terraced houses with fabulous views of farmland back and front.   :)

Thank you for the compliment re the photograph and this is the road we live on back in Sheffield. No amazing views but we are surrounded by fields and woodland.

I put this on Facebook but haven't on here. We moved on December 12th and this is the view from our living room - across Perth City centre to the hills. Can't see Rhodes though Aisha   ;)

It's a beautiful view, Keith. But I do love Scotland.

As for Rhodes - I'm obsessed with seeing it. Tonight the lights on Rhodes are so clear as are the lights of several boats on the sea just off Belcekiz (Olu Deniz).  : :)

Just out of interest, does any of our admin team have any figures of the percentage of CBF members who live in the UK and how many live in Fethiye/Calis.

Good question Des. I'd be interested to know that as well, should refer to actually "living" here / there full time though.

Yes I thought it would be interesting looking at how it built up from 11 years ago when you and the gang started it off Keith, good point from Lee, as to actually living here now and not just holidaying, I remember you telling me you lived here 5 years Keith, im in my fifth year now. still enjoy it, Calis that is not the Prom,  ;) Love Fethiye.

My three favourite places: 1: Where I live now.  2: St Ives - my home for 30+ years.  3: Armagh - where I was born, decades ago!

I don't request you investigate this, Scunner, as I suspect it would be impossible but it is something that mildly interests me. It concerns "you and the gang" who were early movers to Calis/Fethiye. I recall, after a few years of CBF, a longtime, well-informed and hardheaded CBF member, Starman, saying that something like two-thirds of Brits who came to Turkey went home again. This suggestion was greeted with howls of derision and shouts of "Lies, damned lies, and statistics" (the first refuge of those who want to avoid uncomfortable facts). At the time I thought the naysayers had probably not considered that a great many Brits had probably come to the three big cities (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir) on a tour of duty for their companies and were always going to elsewhere after a few years. Thus the stats told us little about how many of those intending to be "permanent movers" had left Turkey after a while. I suspect quite a few of the original gang who came to Calis have since returned to the UK, most notably Scunner and Dave/Crabbit - and Starman himself has gone - but I don't think that there can be stats on this. Perhaps it is a topic for anecdotal contributions - and probably in another thread.

Well some interesting views, but I'd still be interested to know the answer. We moved here in Sept 2007 and have never been back to the UK as yet. So I guess that puts us firmly in the living here camp.

I haven't got access to much in the way of early (2003-2006) stats as we were with different hosts then. Currently, in December 2014 if you look at just the visitors from UK and TR only, 22.2% are based in Turkey and the rest UK.

These figures are interesting.  I have noted on T.A. that a few members of T.A. and one in particular, always tell other members not to join CBF as it is only for ex-pats who live in Calis.
I always thought that was wrong.  Seems I may be right.

Having been a member of the Fethiye Expats Group, and the English Fethiye Buy and Sell, thank God we are not an Expat forum. In fact, we never have been - even when many of us were expats. There is another idiot on Facebook who barks on that we have no right to speak for British expats in Calis!!

We are a resort information website  :)

No problem Des. I have a feeling the TR percentage started very low when CBF began and slowly grew - both as more Brits moved there and due to local people and businesses joining. Based on nothing factual at all, I would say it peaked at around 22% and pretty much stayed there forever after.

I'll keep looking for some old stats though.

Winter, spring and summer - I just love the view.  As cold and wet as it is today, it's still good to gaze over the farmland.  They almost managed to hide the mobile phone, landline and electricity in the woods too!
The front is just like any other road full of houses but when I sit in the back, I have my own daydreaming space and could be anywhere.

As for Rhodes - I'm obsessed with seeing it.

I know what you mean. I was the same - although you have the position to see it, I saw it twice in all my years there!

People absolutely dismissed the idea that you could see it at all through the narrow gap looking out of the bay from Calis prom - so with the help of Google Earth I educated them  :)

Bluwise, rather like you we live in a very ordinary road in the front, but from the back we have a pleasing view. I take particular pleasure in the wildlife we get - the record being 43 species of birds in one year; only 35 so far this year but there is still 3 months to go. And in the autumn the wooded slope opposite is splendid.

Glorious Colwyn.
We don't seem to get much in the way of wildlife.  I have only seen one fox in 15 years and two hedgehogs.  I can't recognise many Birds but we do have a couple of Buzzards nearby and we are visited by House Martins (or maybe they're Swallows, I'm not sure) each year.  Always sad when they leave.

Is that going on IP addresses though, Scunner?
I always use a VPN that shows me as being in the UK - if others do too, that would skew the figures.
(Still interesting though!) :-)
