Title: How Did CBF Members Compare When You Met Them?
Post by: Scunner on December 29, 2014, 13:28:23 PM
Compare as in online CBF persona and "real life" character  :)

I have met hundreds of CBF members. Some are exactly as they appear online and some are absolutely nothing like the person on here.

I met Des Martinson for the first time last year, he was *exactly* what I would have expected - then there is Jacqui Harvey who has a very specific personality on CBF - and is absolutely nothing like it in real life!

How did CBF members you have met measure up?  : :)

I have met Nichola and Volkan, which is hardly surprising given they both have restaurants.  I have also met Wordbird and her gorgeous daughter,  Highlander and Mrs H, Menthol and her fabulous mum and Slikmrs and her lovely mr.

Everyone I have met have real-life personalities that met my expectations based on their on-line characters.  They are (no relevance in the order!)  polite, kind, generous, hilarious, forthright, ditsy, warm and welcoming - just as they are on here.

Yes Scunner, I get the Posh and Your Majesty Handle on CBF, but now you know, as others do in Calis  I am really a down to earth Scouser who lives in (and loves) Scotland.

I have only met a few and they are probably how I imagined perhaps with the exception of yourself Scunner. I maybe got a false impression when I met you, as you may recall you were flying home that evening so would not drink and ate very little. Not how I imagine you are!  ;)

I met Jacqui and her husband last year, and didn't even recognise her from her photo, she is a nice friendly lady not at all like Camilla!!  I also met the lovely Mavis when I dropped off some chocs for the 3Cs.  The biggest surprise was Gordon A. and his charming wife, he seemed a lovely caring man, not at all like his grumpy alter ego!! Although I didn't get a chance to speak to Rimms, he was just what I expected doing his d.j. thing.  The lovely Ian comes across as a bit of a scrooge on here, and of course he is!! BUT he is a very kind, helpful man who is a font of knowledge, and a caring family man.  He can talk for England and Turkey but his stories are always amusing. Then there is the lovely Flipper and her husband Stuart who have become good friends and drinking pals.  When I think about it I have not been disappointed with anyone.

I met UBT and Mrs UBT - several hours late due to crossed wires between us - and he was just as easy to get on with as I had imagined and Mrs UBT was lovely (and he obviously doesn't deserve her).

I would say, even allowing for having some very brief meetings, that members I have met are much as I had imagined.

Perhaps that is why we have made so many good friends.

This year provided a classic example. I hope she doesn't mind me saying, but Brenda and I spent a  little time with lotty and MSB this year and it was as though we had know each other for ages. Is that a CBF thing.

One other thing - the present Mrs H would, rightfully, tell you that my "personna" when in Calis might be totally different to the other 48 weeks of the year when she has to live with me being a pain in the proverbial.  :-[

I think I have met so many over the years, but here goes a few.

KKOB, what a shock when he turned up at ours, I expected some dottery old man who lived in the back of beyond, well, I was right on one count

Highlander, I could understand him, and to this day I still can't.

Scunner, Frighten the life out of me, still don;t think he is funny  ;)

Echogirl1, you had the wool pulled over your eyes, Shopping with him today was pure hell!!!

I am sure I will think of more.

Ok, here goes and apologies if I miss anyone...
Jacqui... As said above, really lovely lady
Highlander, a true gentleman and the lovely Mrs H
Lotty, elegant and exudes energy
Karenina, really sweet, and even offered to help if my son needed it after his awful flight dramas last night
Julie and Gary Veale ..Just love them!
Pookies...absolutely fab people
Diver Baz and Lady Diver, we've had our moments but always seem to come through as buddies!
Hubblebubbles, aka Mavis, inspirational selfless lady
Nichola and Dogan, love them, and it's all their fault for having such a romantic wedding that I gave in and got married too
Scunner will hate me for this, but I actually think he's quite shy, he's so different to how he comes across here, a gentle teddy bear who idolises his family.
And of course the many lovely 3 c's people who give their time and  energy for the local kids here.
The inimitable Rimms and his gorgeous wife, who I'm very lucky to be working alongside helping to get Race for Life up and running.

I'm not going to name names but have met some people I wish I had never met...and people who cross the road rather than say hello because of situations they don't know the truth about and only heard one side.... But I guess you get that everywhere and sadly Calis is notorious for this don't speak to this one or that one mentality. I've learned to value the genuine people here, and happily there are many. I make my own mind up about people, rather than being told who I should and shouldn't mix with.

Bubs mum, one of my best buds here.
Simon and Terrie... Love them lots, They're always there to help all the animal waifs and strays and our dog adores them too.
Busybee... Such a lovely lady, one of my favourite people here.
Mercury.... Well, she used to scare me to death, but has the kindest heart and I love her lots

The biggest surprise is the gorgeous Rindaloo...
She once called me judgemental on here after a comment I made about people in Uzumlu squabbling.
So when Number 2's lovely lads invited us on a boat trip, and said Rindaloo would be coming too I nearly opted out....thank goodness I didn't or I wouldn't have this lovely lady in my life.
Not sure she knows this story...well she does now!

I'm sure there's loads more, but don't know everyone's CBF names.

It's been said so many times, but thanks CBF for making all these friendships possible.

Isn't that just the Calis way - so many people have opinions about others that someone gave them. And they just blindly accept that and make it their own. There were (in fact are) people in Calis who I have never spoken to who have been spoon fed some tale/version about me and that is enough for them. So I had a significant number of people who thought/think (and to this day I have no idea what they were told and am long past caring thanks) I was maybe a rip off merchant/mafia/nasty man etc etc and just accepted that to be true. As Kayakebab says, nobody comes to you and says they have heard something and want to hear your side - that never happened to me even once in 5 years - it's a really odd World!

Ex-pat gossip - nature's way of filtering out the people not worth knowing anyway :D

But this is a happy, positive topic so I will return to that   :)

So many sensational people met due to CBF - I couldn't possibly list them all but if I like you, you'd already know it   :) Sometimes we've been friends so long I actually forget it had anything to do with Turkey or CBF.

Oh and for the record KK, I prefer reserved to shy. I take a while to weigh people up and let myself go fully. Because me with my foot off the brake is rare, and a pain in the ar$e   ;)

kayakebab from your list

Jacqui - have only met briefly
Lotty, elegant and exudes energy - perfect description
Pookies - have only met one half and she's lovely
Diver Baz and Lady Diver - lovely couple
Hubblebubbles, aka Mavis - must meet next time we are over
Nichola and Dogan - always enjoy our visit to their restaurant and our chats
Scunner - scared the hell out of me the first time we meet (a real disaster). Had thought of describing him as cuddly in my first post on this thread but decided against it on health grounds
And of course the many lovely 3 c's people - fabulous people

"I'm not going to name names"...... know what you mean, sadly

Mercury - forthright and a tireless worker for the kids

Rindaloo (big Dave) - bubbly

And the following

shamless2 - more Welsh than Max Boyce and responsible for many very late nights in Scarlett        :)

Anne (the barmaid from hell) and sillybilly - two true friends to whom we will be forever grateful.

toxy     ;) - lots of fun.

kenkay - he of the all-over (well very nearly) tan - lovely fella.

scot - we need to see each other more often.

heatherhanum - splendid times with her and Nigel.

Have probably forgotten someone but will rectify that later.

I haven't met many forum members but those I have are pretty much as I expected, and it's been a pleasure.
Menthol in particular has become a great and valued friend to both me and Little Miss WB - it's been an honour to get to know her *and* her bonkers family, and share the first stages of our new lives here together. (And I know that if she's reading this, she's now cursing me. Doesn't take compliments easily, our Menthol.)

The differing views of Scunner are interesting. When I first met him I found him ......... enigmatic. He was then in an office on Baris Marco Blvd. which I persuaded Hilary we should visit. Having first peered in to ensure we weren't disturbing some important business with clients we ventured in and found a man, with a stunning resemblance to CBF photographs of Scunner, sitting behind a desk. In a failed Stanley/Livingstone moment the conversation opened this way:

Me: Mr Campbell, I assume.
Him: Depends who's asking.

See what I mean? Enigmatic.

I fondly remember the above mentioned visit and can report that Mr. Colwyn Jones is everything you would hope he is - friendly, quite charming and even a little distinguished. But I must reiterate my report from that time. He's nowhere near as tall as he pretends to be on here.

Your memory is dysfunctional. Your report said I wasn't as fat as I was supposed to be.

EDIT: The Evidence
Hi Mr. Colwyn (and the "long suffering" Hilary" ;)We were disappointed that you weren't fat enough. You are obviously a man who likes to spend plenty of money obtained from Turkish ATM's. I learned very early that to survive out here you need to take out your cash on one leg, the other leg is held parallel to the floor behind you to keep the door open and oxygen in.In truth it was very pleasant meeting you both, although it's not the sort of thing we admit face to face.

The second time I met Scunner was on a visit when I also met CBF member AitchTeeCee. Not many of you will remember him. He was a regular contributor in the early days. He even posted his photo on the introductory Photographs of Members section (which seems to have fallen into disrepair). That was how I recognized him some four years later. We were staying at the Nil Hotel where we learned that our air operator - XL - had gone bankrupt. We had no idea how to get home as XL Online was not ATOL covered (although I think its other manifestations were). Angel suggested we talk to the chap at the bar who was a local travel agent. When I recognized him I (foolishly as it turned out) approached him saying "Excuse me, would your initials happen to be HTC?" Astonished, he replied "They are. How did you know?" I said "I remember you from your photo on CBF".

This is where the conversation took a steep downward direction. "Yes I remember" he said with some venom "and that [rude word, rude word, very rude word] Scunner said I looked like Harry Secombe!". Which, to be fair, he did; which is how I recognized him in the Nil. This remark of Scunner's had made him furious - a fury that was still quite hot four years later - and he had never posted on CBF again. He ended with another string of rude words. He did not help us with our flight problem.

Can't win 'em all, eh Scunner?
Title: Re: How Did CBF Members Compare When You Met Them?
Post by: Scunner on December 30, 2014, 16:45:32 PM
With an amazing - if accidental - example of my earlier post. I do recall saying he looked like Harry Secombe in his CBF photo, and he did. All the member photos got a Scunner description and that was one of the most accurate. He stopped posting pretty much soon after. Just last year, someone told me they were recently speaking to the same guy (HCJ as I recall Colwyn, not HTC, that's a phone      ;) ) - and they told me he didn't like me one bit, because I had said he looked like Harry Secombe. Still banging on to anyone who will listen about a gentle tongue in cheek comment made in 2003 - in 2013!

So you see my point, for a number of British ex-pats in Calis - when it comes to bearing a stupid grudge, 10 years is nothing. He has hated me with the same venom for over a decade over a tiny piece of light hearted forum banter. There really are some pathetic, childish people about over there.

I have read these comments with some amusement. People meet face to face  and be pleasant and then on line, for every one to see, show their real side . Discretion or politeness goes out the window. I know it is light hearted, but  some  some poor souls can take offence. (Scunner exepted.)    ;D

Yes, I know Scunner complained that in real life I am neither tall enough nor fat enough (same thing, apparently) but I assure you that, even though I am noted as a highly sensitive poor soul, I have not taken offence. I merely assumed that it demonstrated that Scunner was a man of dubious perception. Please don't get offended on my behalf. Otherwise I'll have to crank up my longtime rant about living in a culture where too many people are all too ready to take offence at damn near anything - even if they excuse it bysaying they are taking offence on other people's behalf.

Yes, taking offence at someone saying you look like a much loved comedian/British celebrity - so much that you spend the next 10 years slagging them off to anyone and everyone, telling them what an effing **** Scunner is!!!

Honestly, would you be offended. Oh, and so you can give a balanced opinion, here is the very photo I said looked like Harry Secombe.
