My name is Steve, and live in Kent, England. Being a new registered member to CBF and hoping I am doing this correctly. Wanting to know daily prices in Calis for meals, drinks etc. Along with the Gulet boat trips average prices. The more info the better really. I have booked a family holiday for August 2015 for 2 weeks and cannot wait. Last visited this area 6 years ago, so probably many changes. What is best regarding currency, purchase before I go or get out there. Do you get better rate out there for your sterling ?? . Currently at home its 3.31 Turkish lira to the £, would the rate be better in August in Calis..
-
goon3r1 - with the greatest respect if anyone on here could predict the exchange rate next week far less in August they would be millionaires.
You will definitely get a better rate in Turkey (perhaps as much as 8 %)
I would say an average meal for two with drinks would be 80-90 lira but it will vary from place to place.

Todays exchange rate in Fethiye is 3.52tl to a pound so definately a better exchange rate here...Bring enough for your first couple of days and then change the rest up here... We have a Nationwide card and there isnt a charge for drawing sterling out of a machine in Turkey.. We then change our money at our bank over there but there is Dikmens exchange in Fethiye. Someone will tell you the best place in Calis? A boat trip on a large boat from The Harbour is about £10/12 per person.. If you are sharing a small boat from Calis considerably more... Dolmus fare is round about 2tl per journey now.

Lucky you didn't ask us to forecast the price of an Efes in August Steve. You'd have caused another riot. ;)
Welcome anyway.
Where in Kent are you ?

Thanks for the quick replies !!!!! - My post sounded a bit daft as soon as I posted and I read it again lol.

Quite close to the Borstal for the first 24 years KKOB, then gradually got further away until I finally escaped :)
Been back to visit (not the Prison) a few times over the years, but as with all things you remember from your formative years, it doesn't seem the same ;(

After you have typed your post choose preview rather than post and you will see them all - just above the box you type in ;)

Gulet boat day-trip prices are cheap - £5-10 a head and children often half-price.
Unfortunately, (in my case anyway) the bar bill isn't so cheap. Prices for drinks are understandably inflated on board and this is where they make the money. I think about £2/6 TL (last year's rate) for a 33cl Efes.
Really, just about the best way to exchange money is to withdraw from an ATM using a Halifax Clarity credit card (or a similar card like Nationwide above). No withdrawal fees and "perfect" exchange rate which is 3.5395 as I speak:
www.xe.com
You do accrue interest immediately upon withdrawal, but this is a pittance if you repay quickly. You can do this using your bank's smartphone app to pay your credit card a day or two after withdrawal.

With a Nationwide card you need to draw Sterling from the A.T.M and then take it to be exchanged for Lira. If you draw any other currency. i.e. Lira you will be charged.
-
Unless you have a Nationwide Flex Plus account, then you can withdraw any currency anywhere in the world without charges. Plus you still benefit from the bank exchange rate.
-
We do have a flex plus account. We were told by Nationwide, we would be charged if we drew Lira, which is why we always draw Sterling.
-
A flex account you are charged, a Flex Plus you are not. We changed to the flex plus last year. It costs £10 per month but all of the additional benefits are worth it, such as free withdrawals, free holiday insurance, 4% interest on the account, additional warranty cover on electrical goods for free etc etc.
We live in Turkey permanently and use this account to withdraw our money here, which is paid into our UK account. We have not been charged a penny for withdrawing Lira. When we check our account we often find the exchange rate is the same as here in Turkey and sometimes better.
-
Correct Jacqui. don't know what he is talking about. been doing it for years as you have. :)
-
It seems to me that you have fee-free withdrawals (ie. no ATM fee, no overseas loading) with Nationwide FlexPlus but have to pay 2% on transactions. I don't have FlexPlus but I do have Nationwide credit card which is 0% on transactions. Best to mix and match?
I've confirmed this now. According to the Nationwide site their FlexPlus account has no non-£ transaction fee and no non-£ cash fee for ATM withdrawals. What you get is the "perfect" Visa rate. So Eric is right and has been getting the best available deal. Info here:

I can assure you Des the Flex plus account is as I state above! We use it all the time and no charges! This is a new account that has not been around for years, unlike the Flex account. Perhaps you are getting confused.
Check out this link; www.nationwide.co.uk/products/current-accounts/flexplus/features-and-benefits

Yes you do pay 2% if you use the debit card to pay for goods. But the FlexPlus credit card accrues no charges abroad for purchases. As you say, mix and match.
-
Now awaiting apologies.
-
Ours is an ordinary Flex account. Not a Flex plus. We have free travel Insurance and have never been charged for drawing sterling out in Turkey..ived in Turkey for 6 years and always used it and are still using it to this day...
-
... but if you withdrew TL, Mercury, the bank would charge you £3 for taking out £100's worth from ATM. Ouch. It's why I stopped using Nationwide FlexAccount debit card when abroad.
-
That is correct Colwyn.. My advice was to withdraw stering and change his money over in Turkey... Nationwide do give The wholesale rate for lira so still a better deal than other banks...
-
Ours is an ordinary Flex account. Not a Flex plus. We have free travel Insurance
I think the limit for a single trip is 31 days. Are you sure you would be covered?
-
Our maximum stay is 28 days now so yes...
-
Steve the day trips from the Calis Boat co op are better than the big boats from Fethiye ,they take twelve and its app £100 if you hire the whole boat making it around £8.33 a head or if you book separately it's around £12 a head
