At the outset I should say that I am posting this on behalf of the Race for Life – Turkey and in memory of Rachel.
Regular members might know what cancer means to Brenda and I. It will, tragically, mean as much to very many members on here. So when Rimms asked me to help with the Race for Life in Turkey, I of course said yes.
So how to raise some money for such a good cause.
Well on March 01, Steve Williams, a Race for Life – Turkey Committee member and one of the events driving forces will run the Antalya Half Marathon. One of the reasons he is doing so is to raise awareness of and if possible raise some money for the Race for Life - Turkey.
Steve will be 60 later this year.
Now I could ask members to kindly donate a fee and simply guess Steve’s time. But that would be boring.
(http://s11.postimg.org/zcuij223z/TSHIRT21.jpg) (http://postimage.org/) So I have 40 t-shirts each with a number on the front and a time on the back. For a mere £ 5 you get a t-shirt (well a picture of one) and that will give you a time for Steve’s race.
Nearest time wins the prize.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
PS I have ready access to more t-shirts.
-
I'm in just tell me how and where to send the £5 and do you just pick a shirt number 1 to 40 and luck of the draw if you get right time on it
-
I'm in just tell me how and where to send the £5 and do you just pick a shirt number 1 to 40 and luck of the draw if you get right time on it
-
Yes DianaJ - times are randomly spread over the numbers 1 to 40 and it is the luck of the draw.
Which one would you like :)
-
Thank you John so much for helping us with this. Cancer rates are rising here at an alarming rate and although Fethiye is a wonderful place, it's still a very small town in a big country where very often people need to travel to the big city's to receive treatment. We hope that our Race for Life event will be the start of making a big difference locally !
-

Are there any TShirts left :-)
Yes Rimms we do still have a number of t-shirts reasonably priced. :)
-
John, your support on this is really appreciated and Steve Williams, you are an inspiration to so many people, not in just the fact that you are running a half marathon (and I'm sure you won't mind me mentioning your age of 60) but also the day to day dedication you put in to keep fit as witnessed by just about every early morning inhabitant on the Çalis sea front come rain or shine.
Like John, many of us have been touched by the physical or psychological effects of cancer, both of which can have a long term devastating effect. Although it's never wise to generalise in these circumstances, I hope most of you can say that when experiencing or witnessing such times, good and comprehensive local care was available to all.
Although healthcare is generally of a very high standard here, many of the 'specialisms' aren't carried out locally. In terms of cancer diagnosis and treatment, a significant amount are only available in city's like Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Ankara etc.
A very typical scenario may be that you have symptoms requiring a colonoscopy or breast tissue biopsy, you will be referred to one of the City's listed above, if you can't afford to get there, stay there, return there etc..... the outcome can of course be not only heartbreaking but devastating.
So there lies our mission, in the fight against cancer we want to bring every good idea to the table and Race for Life - UK is a great idea. Investment in Cancer Research, Treatment and Awareness is not constrained by border, race, age or religion, it benefits us all and we want that benefit to be felt locally.
Anyway, thank you to everyone for all of your support and John, please reserve Chris and I three random numbers, one each for our parents whose lost at a really young age.
Thank you also to everyone who invests £5 in a shirt in memory of a loved one, I promise that your investment will be used to good effect.

Well, for me, Rimm’s passion for this event is very clear from his latest post.
I had hoped to run this thread on his and his team's behalf without becoming emotional involved. Of course that is proving simply impossible.
Brenda and I can certainly say that Rachel received the highest possible quality of care throughout her illness.
But the brutal and heartbreaking truth is that it was not enough to prevent her tragic death at the age of 36.
That is why we have supported the Race for Life in both Inverness and Aberdeen where Rachel died and why I want to help the Calis team. As Rimms said – treatment and awareness is not constrained by border, race, age or religion.
Rimms and has team have taken on a mammoth and daunting task. But today’s great fund raising events, Children in Need, Red Nose Day etc., started for relatively small beginnings. So who knows what his team can achieve if we give him our initial support with the inaugural event.
So, if you can help, please consider doing so. If not, no problem whatsoever.
PS Rimms – the present Mrs. H chose 10, 16 and 32 for you and Chris.

Recently at my well woman check they found a breast lump.
In the UK they would do a fine needle biopsy but here it means a trip to Antalya.
The key to survival is early detection and diagnosis.
Same for prostate... My friends husband had to go to Istanbul for his biopsy. Sadly he does have prostate cancer but they've found it early.
Such procedures should be available locally.
The hospitals here are fantastic at finding the problem but it's essential they become able to do the next crucial stage.
I've just donated £5 through our PayPal account on our race for life website as the facility has just been added to donate.
Does this confuse your system H if I have a number?
If it does don't worry, I'm happy to be the first to donate to this fantastic initiative.
The web address is www.yasamicinyaris.org if anyone else would like to test our new PayPal button ;)

Thanks everyone, your efforts will make such a difference.
-
No internet access over the weekend agghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
If anyone wanted a t-shirt during that time please let me know ;)
-
Thanks to everyone who has bought a shirt in memory of a friend or a loved one lost to cancer. It's a message we are trying to convey here and those running, walking or wheelchairing the race and all will all carry a sign in memory of loved ones or of hope for the future.
When we had our mini event here at our house last year, I spoke to the group of around 50 people who turned up to join in, what I did not know was that one of group was a person who has what I can only describe as the ability to see a spiritual presence. I was told later that as I spoke to the group before the race, this person became emotional and told friends that we were not alone that day and that there was a large spiritual presence gathered amongst us.
The story has stayed with me and although I'm not sure about such things, the thought that we might be joined and supported by friends and loved ones lost to cancer really moves me.
It's a constant regret that I never got to invite my Dad over to see this beautiful place I now live in, but maybe he's been here more often than I could have known and if so I hope he's getting in trim for April 12th when my wife Chris will spend 5k with my Dad George, her Mum Margaret and her Dad Bob.
-
Know how you feel George. Both my parents died of cancer and I would have loved them to see Calis but in particular my Mum I would really enjoyed going around the market with her. I often think of her when we are in Calis market, because being a Scouser she loved a market.
Good luck to all concerned and I hope you get a few more people buying tee-shirts in memory of their loved ones.
-
George
These are from the Race for Life in Aberdeen held 3 months after Rachel passed away.
(http://s29.postimg.org/pkwusl28z/rachel_s_rovers_1.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/pkwusl28z/) (http://s28.postimg.org/odt0v2mbt/rachels_rovers_2.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/odt0v2mbt/) (http://s28.postimg.org/44agbfzpl/rachel_s_rovers_3.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/44agbfzpl/)
There is no question she was with us that day. (I cannot imagine what she would have said about the wigs.)
Although it was extremely difficult and painful to even think about attending I will be forever grateful that I did.
It was such an uplifting experience as indeed will your event surely be on the 12th.
Best wishes
H
-
A touching event for you H but I admire you for attending.

But hey - if you can think of a less blatant bump please pm me on here. :)

To jacqui harvey:
jacqui I have no idea how you managed to run a successful Antiques business for so long when you can make such an big error when multiplying £ 5.00 x 2. ;)
But I do know how generous you are and I thank you very much for your continued support. :) :) :)

Fingers crossed for you H that you get more members who have lost someone through Cancer to buy a shirt for a fiver.
Two ladies I know locally are fighting cancer at the moment. One is getting 50 hours chemo per week. Horrible disease I hope one day there will be a cure.
-
Gosh I do hope there will be a cure one day Jacqui it is a truly terrible disease, unfortunately my mother was not believed she was ill (she was in loads of pain) no exam ever took place and when it finally did it was too late advanced ovarian cancer :(
I always think it is strange how we never hear of any of the royal family having cancer could it be because they have lots of health checks, it is something I have mulled over for a few years now...
Anyway apologies for the minor highjack of topic...

Sunday evening and quite a few people online.
Who wants a t-shirt for a fiver :)

The Queen's Father George VI died of Lung Cancer Karen. However, I am sure as they all have personal Doctors if they get a sniffle the Doctor is there right away. Getting service like this means they are checked all the time.
Back to the plot.
I hope H can encourage a few more members, who have benefited from the information on this website, to buy a tee shirt for a fiver.
-
H, I'll have one, what do I do now? :) I've got a problem with my laptop. I've stopped getting notification of replies for some reason.
-
DonM that's very kind of you especially as you already have a real one.
If you can give the fiver to rimms or kayakebab that will be splendid.
The present Mrs H picked number 15.

A fantastic time and even more impressive in that he was third in his age category.
What a tremendous effort. :).
1 hour 32 minutes, the nearest to Steve's time. was allocated to number 24 which I am delighted to say was chosen by lotty.
Lotty you are the winner of a genuine Race For Life t-shirt and wrist band.
