Title: Another reason to cook from scratch
Post by: JohnF on March 04, 2015, 11:44:44 AM
Ok, I know this is from the Daily Mail, but I was sent the link due to the author - Joanna Blythman has a far better reputation than the DM when it comes to accuracy!

When an ITV investigation on the Tonight programme analysed a typical supermarket 'British lamb hotpot' ready meal, it discovered the ingredients were from ten countries and included New Zealand lamb, Israeli carrots, Argentine beef bones and Majorcan potatoes.

Irish authorities were equally shocked to discover that a pizza bearing the label 'country of origin Ireland' in fact contained 35 ingredients that had passed through 60 countries during preparation and packaging.

Most of the meat, vegetables and fish in our convenience food has been transported and stored while frozen.

We use our local Fish Monger who goes to the Fish Market every morning to buy his fish, it is really good and really cheap.
We also use our local Butcher who guarantees all his meat is Scottish and can be traced to the farms it came from.
So apart from cooking from scratch it is also good to buy from local family shops.

And in Turkey even Fethiye Fish Market sells shellfish imported from Norway.

This reminds me of the time we had a large pub in Dorset. I went to the the local butcher to order several lamb joints for the restaurant kitchen, one of the butcher assistants asked,; " Would you like English, Scottish, Welsh, or New Zealand lamb ?" , I replied that ; " I don't want to have a conversation with it, I just want my customers to eat it !"  ???  The shop had been empty when I went in , but when I turned around , there were 2 elderly ladies whom I hadn't heard enter after I did, and were in fits of laughter at what I had said. Made my weekend , that did !  ;D

I also heard that a lot of the fish in the Fish Market in Fethiye is farmed fish
I am always surprised how bad this Market smells.  Reminds me of the fish counters in Supermarkets that always seem to smell bad.   When I go to my fish merchant there is no smell of fish, because fresh fish does not smell.

Vast majority of bream and bass you eat in Turkey is farmed, trout as well.
