For reasons I won't go into, I was reminded of this game for too many years ago

A work colleague tells me he plays this with his kids now :)
-
Name 'n Shame. He's gotta be found and stopped before he goes over the top and decides to take them to the park to play !
-
I remember me and my friends used to save lolly sticks and use them for this game.
I used to love playing marbles or Ollies as we called it in Liverpool. Always had a really good Ollie that used to be able to beat the others my friends had. Never see kids with marble now.
-
I lost my marbles a while ago too. :-\

Yes, I did realise that...keep on taking the tablets. ;D

In my youth (many ears ago) we used to play "jacks" which involved bouncing a ball in the air whilst retrieving small metal spheres, one at a time, then two, then three, and so on. Many winter hours spent sitting on the lino playing this. Anyone else do this?
-
Yes, we called it Jacks but some kids called it Bones or Knucklebones.

Seeing that picture brought back many memories, we had a league and every week we worked out who was top of the league. I only made it once but I was bursting with pride!! (there were only 4 of us playing!!)

Then we graduated on to Poker Dice or Pokey Die.

When it was too wet outside to play football, cricket, rounders, hopscotch, french cricket, corner spry and whole raft of other outside games like canon, points save the law, building and racing barrows and yes marbles was a favourite, then my mates and I would play many board games including Monopoly, Frustration, and marathon sessions of Risk. I was lucky in a lot of respects as my old man taught me to play a whole raft of card games, many that I still play today including my favourite crib.

We called Jacks 'Chucks' and marbles were 'Allies or Glass Allies'. We relay skipped 'through double ropes turned by the big girls. Shinnied up drainpipes and made swings on telegraph poles. Played netball and rounders all in the street - plus hopscotch etc. We knew how to entertain ourselves !

We called that "Double Dutch". ( That's what Malcolm McLaren's 1983 hit Double Dutch was about. )

It is strange to think this generation of kids will sit on their beds playing computer games when they come home from school. I could not wait to get out and play with my friends and hated it when my Mother shouted me from the doorstep to come in.
I also remember my Nan, who used to look after me when my Mum and Dad went out to the pictures. She used to turn off the T.V. and we used to play cards. She taught me Whilst, which was her favourite. It came in very useful when years later I was Secretary of the P.T.A. and we ran a Whist Drive in the school hall. There was one short at the tables and none of the Mothers or the Teachers could play. I had to step in and make up the numbers. However, it was a cut throat game, taken very seriously by all the players. ;D

Pity she didn't teach you to check your spelling. ;)

O.K. Spelling Police are at it again.... I can spell it if you note I spelled it correctly in Whist Drive.
I touch type at over 60 w.p.m. so, mistakes happen. Sorry, I cannot be as perfect as you two members of the Last of the Summer Wine cast. :o :-* ;)

It's interesting that the same game has different names in different parts of the country.
Similar to "rolls/butteries/baps"
