Ever since Hilary and I gave up smoking, more than ten years ago, we have decided to use the £thousands saved to pay for a second holiday each year. This second holiday has a similar theme to Scunner's ABT holiday (Anywhere But Turkey). This year we are going back to Greece in September for the first time for many years - a new place for us, Skiathos. So I am especially pleased to see today's strong £ going over €1.4 - more or less back to the 70p at which it was launched at the start of the century.

Well that is correct as of today and assumes no Grexit and a return to the Drakma : :) : :)

We used to have a `love affair` with the greek islands for yearsway back from the early 80`s ....then in 1998 we discovered Olu Deniz and the reast is history :-) but like you I am curious as to what the greek islands are like right now ? we had a short 3 day visit to Rhodes town two years ago and found the locals very friendly... but prices about 10% more than here in Hisaronu.... but please post your new experiences of Skiathos on here after your visit :-)

I recall hitch-hiking to Greece in the 1960s when you had to be pretty agile with your mental arithmetic just to keep up with the relevant currency which changed every day or couple of days. You'd go through Belgium Francs, Deutschmarks, Austrian Schillings, and Yugoslav Dinars before getting to the Drachma. Of these the Dinar was the most difficult since it had only just devalued by 100% (or was it a 1000%?) and both old and new currencies were in circulation. So you could try to pay the equivalent 1p for dinner or £100 for a cup of coffee. It was a relief to get to Greece.
