According to a whiteboard at the Calis end this morning.
Wasn't it announced as 6TL at the end of last season ?
-
OH good - the price has dropped ;)
-
Maybe that's their reasoning !!!
-
Simple resolution, ; IF YA AIN'T HAPPY, DON'T USE IT !!!!
-
I make that £1.70 on today's rate, to travel in relaxing style to Fethiye across the beautiful bay. I have no idea how much the dolmus would be, complete with sweaty armpit stuck in your face :D

Yep, AND standing all the way !!

What's a Taxi fare roughly from Calis to Fethiye ??
-
Great VFM on a unique mode of transport - use it or lose it folks
-
Love the water taxi and use it at least once or twice when we are in Calis, excellent value especially at the brilliant exchange rate at the moment. If you are on holiday and you love the journey whats a couple of lira anyway.
-
Think we paid about 75 T.L. for a taxi return from the Yacht Classic and back, between four of us. :D
-
That sounds about right - after significant haggling we negotiated a taxi from the prom to Mancero for 25TL each way (last October)
-
We use the same taxi driver all the time, have his number in our Turkish phone, so he will always be there when we ask him to and will always pick us up at the right time. He gives us a good deal.
-
thought this post was re the price of the water taxi?
-
Yes initially it was, well noticed.
-
Comparing the cost of travel from Çaliş to Fethiye by water taxi, Dolmus or regular taxi is also useful, helps put things in perspective :)
-
Jack I asked taxi prices as having never had to take taxis on previous visits I know I will be this time as I'm not in the best of health and don't intend to spend all my time where I'm straying. It helps to know what to budget for. I'm sure others will find it useful too.
-
Great value for money 8)
-
Look out the "Keep to the Subject on CBF Police" are after us. Is there anyone who will admit they have never done it ? :-[ :-X
-
I saw one of those old five pound notes the other day
-
I have an old Pound Note and a Ten Bob Note but never seen any other ones. I wonder would they make any money in the 3C's Auction ??
-
Have a stash of pre Euro notes...Syrian pre current Assad....Indonesian Savings Book with About £2. Will they go In the pot too ? :o

I was given a nine pound note in my change at the Tuesday Market, don't see many of them about, but the guy didn't mention the water taxi cost.

Serves you right for giving him one of your 47TL notes...

If we all stuck to the subject that starts the thread it would be a very boring forum, how much more can you say about the cost of 7 tl for the water taxi. As Nicola pointed out the comparisons of different forms of transport are very useful, not only the financial side but the comfort side as well. In the case of the taxi fares it is nice to know the sort of price that is reasonable, help people not feel ripped off imo.
-
Has the Efes season started yet.? ???
-
Does it ever stop?
-

Its only the odd few who object. If we stuck rigidly to topic then it'd be a far less friendly and informative place.

-
Its less than a pint of Efes!!! :D
-
What was the Topic anyway?

Last November Rimms posted a thread here rightly complaining that Water Taxi Fares had increased the fare from 5TL to 6TL, and here we are with fuel cheaper, lower inflation and they have increased the price again within 5 months to 7TL. Now according to my poor maths that's a wacking 40% increase. That's not stinging profitering that's grand larcency. And while I respect the point about how nice it is to go to and from Fethiye in the boat, there's no reason why people should be gouged to do it. I know people have the right to not use the service if they do not like it, but come on is this the sort of things Calis wants to get a reputation for?
Which leads me onto a post I put on Rimms thread, which further demonstrated that the Water Taxi are taking the michael then on pricing:
I think they played a similar game on the day hire too. Putting up the price from 400TL to 450TL late in the season, after putting up the price from 350TL to 400TL less than a year ago. Plus there appears to be a more 'standard' service approach with little difference in the food (and quantity) between the boats, and the return before 5pm!! And do not get me started on the 450TL for up to ten people, and then additional people (including children) over the 10 being charged 45TL, it never used to be like that. It is something that has been slipped in in the last year or so.
Don't get me wrong I love the day out on the boat, we usually get out 6-10 times a year, but I do not like the feeling that I am being ripped off.
I shall go down and find out what they are going to charge for the coming season for private day hire, and if as I suspect they have put up the price to 500TL or more, I shall look for alternatives. >:(

Turkish tourism businesses are fully aware that the Brits are now getting more Lira for their Pound.
So their logic is " they can afford more so we'll charge more ". While people keep paying they'll keep overcharging. Don't pay more.!!!
Walk away.
-
I am surprised nobody has mentioned how cheap the local buses are. We have often travelled from Calis to Fethiye at a fraction of the price of said services, sweaty armpits et al, but for tourists experiencing local life it can be enlightening on local services. ;D
-
The Water Taxi is for the tourists in the main and the tourists will pay 7TL for the experience. I think 7TL is still a cheap price for such a nice trip. Where would you get a trip like this in the U.K. for a couple of quid.
No one is complaining of the price of beer, which seems to go up every year. So, for the price of a pint, you get a great experience.
-
And, not a lot of people know this, but you can ask for wine or beer during the trip but make sure you do it when your with the captain before the boat leaves.
-
I doubt the annual increases on the Calis water taxi will hurt the "local" - I don't see man taking the boat to work. It's not even a very efficient way of getting from A to B :)
What they could do is rebrand it as "Fethiye Return Mini Cruise" and charge 20 TL, good price for a relaxing excursion on a boat across one of the most beautiful bays there is.

Are you having a laugh Jacqui? No one complaining about the price of Efes...I don't think so!

your probably right on the walk away advice. The only issue I have when the TL strengthened (2.40 to £ at one point) I didn't notice anyone saying the Brits cannot afford it at this price or exchange rate we'd better drop the price......greed never cuts two ways

I see people asking how much beer is all the time, however, I feel this is just the norm and general interest. They will not say they are not going to buy any beer because the price has gone up.
-
I bought less last year Jacqui :) Our 'local' put it up to 8ytl so I just drank less or not there at all.
I needed their wifi though ;-)
-
Come on Stoop it is your holiday, splash out and enjoy the holiday, no penny pinching...get those moths out of your wallet. ;D ;)
-
TBH I did drink less and cost was an issue. Normally I just buy a crate or two but last year I bought it as I needed it. Having to get on my bike at least gave me some excersise :)

This is a Fethiye phenomenon, and I suppose all areas where there is a significant (£ & €) tourist population during the summer season. It doesn't happen in other areas of Turkey and it p1sses me off also.
Over the years I've spent more time in Istanbul than Fethiye and I've noticed how the "cost factor" has shifted from Fethiye being considerably cheaper to eat/drink, to it now being almost the inverse. Of course you can pay an arm and a leg for a beer and a mediocre bite to eat in Taksim or Sultanahmet, but in places like Mecidiyeköy (where I live when in Istanbul) everything from pide to beer is either similar or cheaper than Fethiye prices - gauging it by last summers prices when it was 3.5tl to 1gbp.
I was chatting to a boat owner I've known for about fifteen years about the price of his boat (expensive compared to previous years) and his response was exactly as Kevin stated "you can afford it so why bitch about it".
If my old local next to the office bumped the prices because the lira had weakened they'd have no customers within 24hrs!.
Anyway, the average tourist will pay what is asked for - and thats what most folks tend to do when they are on holiday.

When it comes to going somewhere for a lunchtime drink the things I consider are stuff like: where is the best view, where has a decent shade a little breeze, where are the comfortable easy chairs, where is friendly with good hospitality, where can I call over the front wall to the stuffed mussel seller to bring me a little snack to go with the beer, the place doesn't have loud music does it? It hardly ever crosses my mind about the price of Efes, and certainly not at 8TL/£2. If the usual price was 8TL but one place, same as the rest, charged 12TL it would cross my mind then.
I'm a bit worried about Stoop though. Perhaps Highlander could organize a whip round for the Save Stoop's Holiday Efes Fund?
-
Ha Ha Colwyn! I might need it this year :(
Three weeks in the States then three and a half in Turkey! All booked before I was made redundant :'(
Good job I've been 'promoting' Sensatori and giving the first timers tips on where to go in the area - I've been promised some beers over the 'wall' ;-) Just hope I can catch them :)

Totally agree with you Colwyn, we never think of saving money on Holiday and I bet if I asked Phil he would not have the first idea how much Efes was. He, like me, just wants to chill out and enjoy...
-
I paid 20 at Sat once - never again!

Many businesses in Fethiye (and this is general, not about the water taxi) pay their rent in pounds so they have to increase their prices in order to survive.
Turkish government is "inventing" nex taxes and costs all the time as well.
We pay insurance for our staff and now we have to pay tax over that insurance, more than 1000 TL. It feels like being punished for doing the right thing.
P.S. We also have to pay tax over the rent that we pay.
-
Dutchie
I note what you say but please tell me how that relates to "Yabanci " pricing.?
It disgusts me to watch a Turkish person in front of me buying an item and
being charged X amount, then I attempt to buy the same item and get charged
far more. Why should I pay more.? I always tell them where to put it. It's theft.
I asked the Turkish Consul in London if he and his staff were charged more for
their shopping in London than English people. That was a few years ago and i'm
still waiting for his reply.
Jacqui.
If you want to be carefree with your money on holiday fine, but I wont be knowingly
be ripped off by anyone. I'm not mean but i'm not daft either.
-
You're right and I agree with you.
I have to admit that we do it ourselves as well but I look at it the other way around.
We charge less from people that we know or who work in resort (waiters, receptionists, etc). Simply because they are on low wages and most of them are struggling.
But if we would charge everybody that amount, then we would not survive.
Because the tourists pay full price, we are able to give a discount to the people who can't afford.
Turkish tourists get charged the same as foreign tourists though.
-
Turkish tourists get charged the same as foreign tourists though.
Where I go for my hols is mostly a Turkish resort. By this I mean that 80%+ of the tourists are Turkish. They are not great consumers of Efes and so places there don't sell at at "give-away" prices like 6 or 7 TL. On the other hand they are very demanding in terms of the quality of the food and hawkeye over the prices. So what I lose on the beer swings I gain on the meals roundabout. Fine with me.
-
It would appear Dutchie from what you are saying that as long as the differentiated charging goes on no one is the winner, businesses, locals (Turkish and other) and of course the poor put upon tourist. I agree that many of the locals are having a hard time of it, as indeed the businesses, except perhaps for the rentier class. However, so are many of the tourists who come over here. Their holiday being their once in the year treat for the family, and they choose to spend it here in Turkey, or in particular this part of Turkey, and so people who make a living, directly or indirectly, from these people should shown them some respect, and the easiest way would be an rigidly enforced requirement for prices to be properly displayed, and wherever it occurs pricing must be in TL.
-
I agree that prices should be displayed properly, no doubt about it.
But giving locals a discount, doesn't mean that we don't show respect to tourists.
We try to do our best for everybody and if tourists can't afford, then we don't charge them.
And sometimes tourists don't show us respect by taking advantage of that.
So be it. Their conscience, not ours.

Went to migross yesterday by taxi from Koca Calis to big migross behind esnaf 35 lira each way
